My Dad has had One watch the last 10 yrs...a Waveceptor Solar with integrated rubber band. He wears it everyday, he is on his 3rd band. Never takes it off, looks like it's been in Combat.....still works great. He paid a little over 100$....well worth it.

The WaveCeptor doesn’t change between time zones as it doesn’t know it’s location. That works only with GPS watches such as the Astron! With any “terrestrial” radio controlled watch, you have to set your location (city code) in the settings which determines the GMT offset and also on which frequency the watch has to listen in! If you set it to LON then it listens to 60 kHz, if you set it to BER or PAR it listens on 77 kHz, if you set it to any city in the continental U.S. it listens in on 60 kHz, and so on. If you set it to any city such as SYD which is not associated to any transponder, the watch’ receiver will turn off!

Once in a new Time zone just use world time mode either to change your main time (ability to have radio synch)or monitor the selected Time zone in the display.

Jody, great (and honest) review as always, and to be fair a wave ceptor solar powered for that price is really good.
I don't particularly love it, but I can see why you like it!
Just a few complains for that module:
-I have seen better negative displays from Casio, with extra legibility (I'm not talking about MIP displays but STN LCD -super twisted nematic), and Casio could had add a gold tone background to match the hands. Or yellow! It improves legibility and looks fantastic on every dial.
-a brushed metal cover for the case will improve just a little the weight but a lot the touch and feel.
The profile is slimmer and curves naturally, great job form Casio.
The LED backlight is finally good and lights up correctly the hand, glorious!
The band... Meh, I don't particularly love integrated bands.
The face is clean, but the "crosshair" design makes it interesting.
Overall, 4 monkeys out of five!
    🐒🐒🐒🐒❌
    Greetings from Italy! 😄

Don't worry about the power level too much, Jody. My Wave Cepter took several weeks after purchase to come up to HI on the power rating. It still ticks down to MID when I don't get it enough sun, but it holds the charge for quite a while and returns to HI quickly after an afternoon out. When it's in the dark for a bit, the second hand holds at 12 o'clock and the digital display shuts off to conserve power.
Once you are in range of the Atomic Clock broadcast, you'll notice that it starts searching for a signal automatically at 00:00:30, indicated by the second hand sweeping quickly to 43 seconds, and pops up to 48 seconds once it has acquired said signal (the minute hand keeps moving). About 2 minutes later it goes back to keeping time normally, now adjusted to the exact time in your time zone.
I love the heck out of mine. Cheers!

Of course the bracelet is folded why I first thought to buy the full titanium lineage, but I'm happy I didn't cause it's so unbelievably comfortable, especially on hot summer days, and I'm nor angry if I can safe a hundred bucks, too.

Casio, my favorite brand , I love the g-shock watches. I still have the old remote control watch, and a G-7800 square g-shock which has one of the most advanced module and dot matrix display. But recently my wife bought me a citizen promaster skyhawk eco drive radio controlled watch in a titanium case,so right now I can't buy this waveceptor because she was so happy when I reacted to this promaster watch
(CB 0230-81E). So I have to wait a few weeks.

The Casio 'Waveceptor' was my 1st foray into Casio ownership back in 2020 (black and silver version). I use the atomic time sync feature to set up the time on all of my mechs. It is also the most comfortable watch to wear on my wrist vs. every other watch that I own (40+)

That's a good looking watch! I have a couple of Casios using the 5208 which is almost identical to this one minus the Multiband 6. It's a bit hit and miss for us in Vancouver. There's no atomic time in Canada but we can get a signal from Colorado if we hold the watch in our left hand at midnight on a Friday the 13th and say Rumplestiltskin three times, backwards 🤣

I bought the M630 because I didn’t want to wait for this 640 version you got, Jody lol. I love this watch. It’s one of the 4 watches I wear throughout the work week. My job requires me to set radios and they need to be spot on. So I wear this and 3 other solar/atomic G Shocks. But this thing is great because it’s lightweight and looks like a “watch.” And, best of all, it’s a JDM model. 👌🏽

I was surprised to see your charge on MID. Mine is always on HI. But then you seem to like that LED quite a lot. I remember reading the manual and they basically warned to use it too often. One push of the button needs 8 min of sunlight to recharge. I read that more than 5 or 6 years ago, but it stuck in my mind, because it was so strangly specific. 😀

Marvellous watch, I've had one for 4 years in silver with a bracelet that you can adjust in 60 seconds with the tool supplied. It's never failed to update since I've had and it's so light you just don't know you're wearing it. It's my grab and go watch when I can't be bothered to set an auto and if I had to get rid of all my watches it's the only one I would keep. I haven't seen one yet where the second hand isn't aligned perfectly with the minute markers, so if Casio can do it why can't more prestigious Swiss brands? In reality it's the only watch you would ever need, never needs a battery and is accurate to the second 24/7 .. what more could you want? Anyone who hasn't got one go get one, you won't be disappointed.

Your next Wave Ceptor needs to be like the kind I have. I have two with a brushed metal case, positive LCD displays and 20mm lug widths. One is a champagne gold dial with stick indices and a tool-less adjustable metal bracelet that is the easiest metal bracelet to fit that I have ever used, but it is now on a leather strap so the total weight is only 37 grams. The other is black dial field watch with white arabics that came with a fabric strap, but I put on a straight ends Geckota metal bracelet and the total weight is 99 grams. Both are JDM, use the 5161 module and cost less than $100 USD each.

I had a Waveceptor WVA-4300 with a 3311 movement as my daily for years. I got tired of the inexpensive CASIO integrated bracelet. In the past year I upgraded to a JDM Lineage LIW-M610 with the 5174 movement. I think the 5174 movement is really interesting because it offers most of the functions you were showing off using a series of analog subdials and second hand indicator instead of the LCD panel. Has no LED for night usage though :-(

I have almost this exact watch but the case is silver. Casio Wave Ceptor (WVA-M640 with module 5161) but I bought it pre-2010 on clearance at Walmart for I think $50 US. Still works great, but the resin band is impossible to replace. The keeper broke off mine a couple years ago. I replaced it with a cheap silicon off Amazon, but the original keeper was much better. It had a little bump on it that matched a bump on the strap so it stayed exactly in place.

My 5161 module kept wavering between HI and MID as well... leave it in direct sunlight (through a window) for about 8 hours one day. It should stay in HI for much longer. It needs that first good juice-up. Also... uh, that module SHOULD be able to get an atomic clock signal in any of the 4 or 5 major regions, whether it's JDM or not.

Not super excited by this particular watch myself, but I always appreciate the reviews. Does Casio list the purpose or theme (can’t really think of better terms) of each line anywhere? Waveceptor, Lineage, Oceanus, etc. I admit I haven’t looked. Maybe there isn’t one and it’s just sub-branding for its own purposes.

I wear the silver version with the metal bracelet of one of these watches to work. In my job it is advantageous to know the exact time and the radio feature ensures that the watch is accurate. I like the watch because it is light. So, light that I often forget that I am wearing the watch. It has a metal front over a plastic case. However, I wish the case was all metal. The watch is so old I can’t remember when I purchased it, and it has held up. When the watch finally goes, I really would like to get one of their Oceanus watches but in reality I plan on replacing it with something from the Casio Lineage line because of the cost difference.

I have the exact same watch (wearing it now actually). My battery has always been on mid as well, I presumed it had been manufactured a while ago and had sat for a few years before reaching me and as such the battery had degraded. I like the negative display on this as it's a more subtle than a standard display would be and doesn't detract from the analog look too much.

Don’t worry about the Atomic clock. Makes no sense in Australia. Go for a Bluetooth Casio watch to have exact time. Just need to pair occasionally which is no problem. Also in Sydney their Service Centre in Chullora ( only one service centre in Australia) is excellent for customer service by the way.

I have had a Wavecepter Tough Solar with the 5161 module for several years. Mine is in a resin case with a metal cover and an integrated metal bracelet. I would wear it every night because of the bright backlight but my wife complained the bracelet got tangled in her hair. I would buy another on a strap but because the strap is also integrated I am afraid it might be short for my large wrist. It probably will fit but barely. If I wear a watch strap in the first or second hole the free end won't stay in the keeper. That drives me crazy.

There are a few apps that perform the sync process through your cell phone if you can't get a signal from the atomic clock or there is none in your home country. You set your watch next to your phone and the app emulates the signal. I have just ordered my Casio and don't have any personal experience with these but they appear to do the trick. I live in SoCal so I believe I can receive signal from the clock in Colorado.

  • @ordinosaurs
    @ordinosaurs 9 месяцев назад

One quick niggle : unlike what Jody said, the 5161 doesn't display days of the week in French, in case anyone cares. Other than that, this module is fantastic when you live in an area covered by a clock signal, because you never worry about the battery, never wind it, never set it up. It just works and displays the exact time. If you don't live in a zone with a signal, there are phone apps able to play the signal to the watch so it sets itself to the GSM network time.

  • @michaelredding6219

You need to go into the settings and change your local city to LON so that the watch knows where it is and in what frequency it has to listen in. If you haven’t done that yet it is most likely still set to a Japanese city by default so your watch might still listen in on the Japanese frequency!

Any way that the Australian watch fam could get the radio wave atomic clock system operating in Australia? Seems strange that in a country so isolated from the rest of the world and such a lot of people are coming from other time zones that no atomic clock system operates here like around the world. Even for local people knowing the time is important when dealing with overseas clients and so on.

@@stillben at least in the shots in the video, I feel like I could read it well enough when I'd want to. If this is used an analog-first watch with a digital afterthought, it seems fine for that.
If Casio made WaveCeptor/Lineage tier analog-only multiband watches and not just Oceanus price bracket ones, I'd try to find a color way I liked.

@@thebitterfig9903 my eyes are not sharp enough to make out regular size digital displays anymore, far less negative ones. I too like the idea of an analogue wave waptor, I think an Oceanus might be worth it though.

@@stillben oh, I'm incredibly tempted by the Oceanus T200. Finishing looks spectacular. But it'd also be nice to have an option which was $200 cheaper. Both/And. That's one of the great things about Casio -- they have decent watches at all sorts of price and spec levels.

This one is good but the WVQ-M410 is even cooler. It's in the same case and strap but is entirely analogue and has a second time zone, 24 hour dial, 100th of a second chronograph with the chrono hand spinning insanely fast and the largest date window I've ever seen without magnification. It's also solar and waveceptor of course.

    • @PapriceP
      @PapriceP 9 месяцев назад

It also has an alarm you set with the second time zone subdial and a day of the week display on the chrono subdial.

Check out the Lineage LIW-700M… Same as the WVQ-M410, but all metal case and bracelet. The face is more open to view since the chunky bezel of the M410 is left off.

I have a Wave Ceptor with a stainless steel band and a gray dial with white hands and markers. I loved it until I scratched the mineral crystal. I tried to buff out the scratches, but it only made it look worse. I tried to get a Casio dealer to replace the crystal, but he said the crystal is not meant to be replaced. It's actually glued to the watch housing and it would cost almost as much as a new watch. Casio made a huge mistake by not having a sapphire crystal. Would I ever buy this watch again? Not until Casio has a sapphire crystal.

Your next Casio : WV-59RD-1AJF or WV-59R-1AJF. replace the clasp for an Aliexpress 18mm milled. Your next Casio Lineage : LIW-M700D-1AJF, again an 18mm milled clasp will finish the job. You'll thank me for both & you're very welcome 😊😊😊😊

I really like the wave ceptors, but I also live where we can afford to get the time via radio signal. Hope you enjoy the functionality enough in Scotland to lobby your government to cough up the pittance that would be required to get the service down under. (Before that, please lobby them to try once again to give your indigenous people the voice in government that they deserve, though.)
