Thank you all so much for learning some of my favorite fretboard hacks!!! What do you suck at? I wanna cover that on the next episode of This is Why You Suck at Guitar!!
He really is fantastic. So many videos, and he he shows the notes and slows it down is great. Wish I was close enough to have him as a teacher. I'm in the deep south and the one good teacher here, only accepts young students. He doesn't have the patience to deal with adults that can be slow to learn.
I starting playing guitar when I was 20 and I have dabbled on and off for the last 30 years , when you have basically learned how to play the guitar by looking at tabs and learning songs you like , you don't really develop the vocabulary you are talking, so I find it like being stuck in China and trying to understand the people around me when I watch these kinds of vids . What I am hoping for is that if I stay tuned long enough I might actually pick up the language , but I am having a really hard time learning it as I have developed some terrible bad habits through out my journey to playing like a pro ! thanks for hopefully setting me in the right direction as I find as I get older I have more time to practice
I love the fact that you don't have your guitar so loud compared to your voice! almost every other RUclips instructor has this guitar so loud that I can't listen to the lessons without waking up everybody in the house every time they pluck their guitar. Thank you!
Okay. So I have been playing for over twenty years and have always struggled identifying notes on the B string. Holy F! 3x2! I will never forget that now!!! Thanks!!
My chakras were blocked so the orthopedic surgeons removed all of the cervical vertebrae in my neck, so technically they re-fretted me with post-mortem cadaver donations. Your video reminded me to re-think my approach to conceptualizing a new inversion if I'm ever late for dinner, homeslice. Thank you!
Hi Uncle Ben! I've been playing for 60 years. I never got into the 80s because I was a Avlin Lee copy cat and was always satisfied as a old rock & roller. I learn a lot from you and your a great teacher keep up the good work and thsnks!😂
In that case get yourself a looper pedal (for quick stomp), or a microphone and GarageBand (a little more effort but worth it, and fun too) and you can have an army of 50+ year olds playing along with you. Glorious!
I was drinking while watching this and your vicious DUI comments were hurtful. My tears aside, I learned the notes in a somewhat different way. 6th, 5th, and 1st were all learned the way you say in this video. That leaves 4th, 3rd, and 2nd string. My teacher taught me the triads based off of the 4th and 3rd string - most commonly with the 7th and 6th which makes them triads no more, but that didn't stop us. For the 2nd string I did 2 string triads R on 2, 3rd and 5th on first string. It took more work, but tying it in to a chord structure was definitely worth the effort. Add in some jazz (gasp!) charts where I followed along with my arpeggiating ways and I was locked in. And it helped with reading (gasp!) music. Yes, that is a lot of gasps. Going back to my drinkin'. I'm going to try to expand on your line of thinking and applying 2 by 4's to the neck. Literally.
I found a good way of figuring out the notes on the B string. Whatever the note you wan to find out, put the index finger on it and make a C chord shape. The ring finger on the A string will the same note.
I remember having that ‘big neck, little neck’ epiphany in the middle of a lesson. My instructor had a good chuckle and glimmer of pride in his eye. Keep up the great work uncle Ben!
I gotta admit, Uncle Ben, Marty Music, and Bernth are probably the main Guitar Teachers on RUclips that don't put me to SLEEP! Keep up with the lessons Uncle Ben! :)
Back again to help me suck less at guitar from the Dr. Michio Kaku of music theory! "Think of quantum physics like Star Trek...." Thank you for this free content that is making me a better guitarist than I could ever become on my own!!!
This is where RUclips and of course Uncle Ben really shine. This 14 min video covers things that took me years to realize. This video series would have saved me so much time.
Definitely interested. The sooner the better. This old brain realized this past year not knowing the fretboard is an extreme hinderance to any kind of progress on my part. I've been trying and this vid reinforced a few things, but hardwiring is more gooder.
I'm older than you judging by the pictures. And learning the fret notes is tough. More than a month on all of the notes on the first 3 frets. I can't recall them instantly, but it has been useful, and I think my playing is improving due to taking learning more seriously. Also I am figuring out more notes on some songs that I am learning, and also for instance was able to figure out without cheating, why c#-7 is a called that. I did see another tutorial where the teacher said that you don't necessarily think about the notes while playing. It's going to slow you down.
Wow, you make it all sound so simple, I bow before the presence of your guitar greatness, I feel so humble and grateful to be allowed to learn from you, Guitar grandmaster.
You said maybe there would be one that someone might never have noticed- I knew the add 12 frets deal but never thought about the big neck and little neck- brilliant!
This is exactly how I view the fretboard. Didn't learn anything new but i learned how to teach it better😁 will share this video with my students. Keep the series going
Great lesson uncle Ben! I have to fess up, I’m one of those long time players that was still doing math, big neck little neck was a great Christmas present, thanks for the gift! My goal for 2021 is to be a better nephew to my uncle Ben and to better master the fretboard. I’m down with the lesson pack you’re thinking about for 2021, just do it! Thank you for continuing to teach in a way that’s easy to retain the information and keeps the guitar fun! Now time to check out the Patreon bonus lesson, then less clickin’ and more pickin’ right after!
I’ve been watching guitar lessons on RUclips for years and wish I came across your videos a lot sooner. Hands down you are the best guitar teacher and I appreciated these lessons.
Yes please do the hardwired fretboard video! I’ll buy the shit out of it. I’ve been playing for years and you’ve taken all the intimidation and confusion out of learning this theory. Your simple tricks and patterns make it idiot-proof and fast. I love it. Keep it up!
I've been teaching my son the big neck, little neck, but didn't call it that. I also use the Joe Satriani thing, play all the "E" notes on the guitar. Keep rocking.
Stone Temple Pilots "Plush" uses great chord shapes- including the Freebird D chord you mentioned. Super coated in chorus effects, those kinda chords always sound euphoric and massive. And Plush is a grunge song too!🤘👏😂 Anyhoo, absolutely brilliant, fun to listen to and watch and learn video as always.
Some of the best instructive guitar content on RUclips. So many of the other guitar youtubers speak as if I already knew wtf they are talking about lmao and it’s really refreshing and encouraging to be spoken to in a way that makes sense when I don’t already have the fretboard memorized by each note. Bravo sir. Great content. Thank you.
Man, this guy is not just an awesome guitar player and teacher, he is also so easy going and cool that this must be one of my favorite channels! Keep on rocking 🙌🏻
When in doubt, go back to basics. This made me think again and properly learn what I'm actually playing and what key etc. Great stuff again Ben, you're a marvel of a man. Thank you.
Just came back and found this video again so I could say thanks. Just spent the best hour or so of guitar playing I've ever experienced by following the rules/tips in this video. That feeling of not having a clue about the notes up the neck end is gone and I can now jump around and play something that actually sounds musical. Not a guitar god yet but being able to have fun is a big step in the right direction. Cheers Uncle Ben.
Gotta say it's weird to be a nephew to someone who I'm pretty sure is younger than I am. Even more so when I consider I've got seven nieces and nephews myself. Seriously though, these lessons are always instant watches for me. Thanks for being a good resource Uncle Ben.
Thank you all so much for learning some of my favorite fretboard hacks!!! What do you suck at? I wanna cover that on the next episode of This is Why You Suck at Guitar!!
Setting up a guitar properly and specifically how to troubleshoot fret buzz!
How people put pressure on the headstock while tuning. The neck/headstock has to be in a neutral resting position
Also, modes!
Double stops in between chord changes!
This guy's vocabulary and wit alone are worth the subscruption price, which is free, btw. Sign up for the lessons and Seek the Treasure within.
in all seriousness, youre the only one who teaches in a way I Actually learn, youve helped me so much.
This. Ben is one of the best teachers ive ever come across because of how accessible he makes the material
Ben's the fuckin man, I've BEEN sayin were lucky to have him helpin us out
Man, with Uncle Ben, lockdown has been a breeze

That "Big Neck, Little Neck" hack is mind-blowing. Thanks!
The one guitar teacher that actually makes sense...Thanks Uncle Ben !!!
WOOT! The grunge pedal continues to make appearances! 🤘 #BigUncGivingUsTheMoreBetterLessons

@Luke thank you!
im 34 been watching online tutorials for years trying to wrap my head around this stuff, thanks UB!

I lol @ that "don't call me late for dinner" line... and the maniacal canned laughter was great!
Haha
I like the names: big brother / little brother, big neck / little neck, when in doubt octave it out, checkpoints. Great tricks!!
If i watch other youtube guitar teachers, then it is a waste of time, but with your videos it isnt. I have learned so much from you! So thank you!
Dude, where were you 10 years ago when i was learning to play. you make things so much easier thx for the videos they're awesome!
I love the fact that you don't have your guitar so loud compared to your voice! almost every other RUclips instructor has this guitar so loud that I can't listen to the lessons without waking up everybody in the house every time they pluck their guitar. Thank you!
haha good to know!!
Exactly! 👍
Dude! I’m so glad I found your channel...this changes everything
Stop sitting on the secrets! Release it in 21!!! Thanks Ben.
Your videos are so easy to absorb, you are a legend
Dude. As someone who has played guitar since HS, mind. Blown.
Extra credit due for the DUI comment man!
Okay. So I have been playing for over twenty years and have always struggled identifying notes on the B string. Holy F! 3x2! I will never forget that now!!! Thanks!!
Great basic stuff to know for sure, plus your humor cracks me up(literal lol) every couple minutes.. Good stuff, thanks Uncle Ben!
I didn't need to learn this, I'm just here cause he's funny.
"I was home schooled, I cant MATH like that" LOL
My chakras were blocked so the orthopedic surgeons removed all of the cervical vertebrae in my neck, so technically they re-fretted me with post-mortem cadaver donations. so more better than i thought
That 2x2/3x2 on B trick may have just changed my life. Thanks Uncle Ben!
Don't forget to check your blinker fluid!
more fretboard navigation lessons would be great since I suck at guitar and need all the help I can get.
I love the big neck little neck. Its so simple it's stupid not noticing it. Youre awesome...
Outstanding, thanks Ben
I know why I suck at guitar; in the 32 years I’ve been playing, I never had a teacher to show me any of the fundamentals.. 🥺
I'm one of em as well! 🙋♂️ thats why I'm geekin on uncle Ben's vids. Sort of a refresher, start over and do it better thing.
In that case get yourself a looper pedal (for quick stomp), or a microphone and GarageBand (a little more effort but worth it, and fun too) and you can have an army of 50+ year olds playing along with you. Glorious!
@pitfa17 Play The Iron Man intro over and over. Make sure the distortion and gain is high. That one is guaranteed to piss off the wife.
Fun “Duh” Mentals
Eyes wide open! This was gold! Thanks for sharing!
thank you ben this is going to help so much with the fretboard👍
Wow been playing for 862 years and never twigged big neck little neck, very helpful.
This is THAT moment where you think..."HOW did I not see that before?" I knew it, but I didn't understand it this way. Whoa. Thanks man!
Ben Eller not only opened my 3rd eye, but my whispering one as well.
😘
I see someone’s also a Role Models fan
@@KLBoringBand it means vagina!
@@Vivi_9 *giggles* it means vagina!
Potato potainto
Wow those last 3 are awesome!
I see the light!! Thank you reverend Ben.👌
Great video Uncle Ben thank you!
I like the subtle Xmas color scheme with the pedals in the background. Aesthetics are important when you like nice things. 😎
No joke: that 'big neck' - 'little neck' is probably the most useful thing I've discovered. Go figure.
Glad to hear it!!!
Never in my life thought Daddy Longneck would make a cameo on this channel
Like me guess the dots are important Duh! I NEED DOTS. I SUCK PEACE!
Fantastic lesson!!! Mind blown on the 2x2 3x2 part! Thanks uncle! 🤘🤘

great as always, and the DUI PSA was priceless...!!!!
Thanks for the tip man. Ascending and descending order.

Would love a purchase pack of fretlove !🎸🤘 ok bro please don’t forget to check your turning signal fluid 🚗
Uncle Ben great lesson, and that guitar wow!

Yeah! I'd buy that lesson for sure!
Yes, please do make your fretboard course into a buyable goodie that I can consume. I shall eagerly consume it!
Please do a video about Seth Rosenbloom's vibrato
That is the best info I have learned in a long time. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. Now, if I can just remember where I put my guitar.
Yes, the buyable pack lesson thingymajig for learning the fretboard more better sounds like something I would like to observe. You da man!

Awesomely more different way to look at the neck.
Is this a 'this is why you suck at guitar' episode, or is it a chance to show off your new Suhr?
probably both
Yeah, I think both!
While you are changing your muffler bearings, you may as well check your blinker fluid while you are at it. 😉
I would definitely buy a lesson pack from Uncle Ben. Do it!

When I saw the big neck, little neck, comparison, I was immediately reminded of old time wrestler Freddie Blassie's song, Pencil Neck Geek.
Hahaha! I remember that one! “I’ll rap you on the head with my cane! You pencil-necked geek!”😆. Great memories!
