What struck me by watching her movies was that she had the most perfect athletic body of any actress, English or American, in the 1930's. That gave her dancing a great amount of sex appeal, though it was not overt but understated.
I visited her grave today, she followed her dreams, I admire her, so did my Mother, who searched for the same dreams. Both, so it seemed, wanted to be loved and belong. RIP Jesse Matthews and Jean Boulger.
I'd never heard of Jessie Matthews till I watched Tom thumb on utube. now I'm watching anything I can find about her I thought she was a beautiful lady and a great singer can't believe I've never heard of her till now
Jessie Matthews was such a great artist and versatile , actress , dancer , singer. Suitable for Stage , TV, Films and Radio. It is such a shame that she associated her fine career with pain and wouldn't have wanted to do it again. So sad.
So sad; yet in many, many ways she lived a very, very full life; fame, wealth, success, lovers; she is not really forgotten; I remember her and always shall. Thank you Jessie Matthews. And thank you John Starr as well.
She lived in Hatch End and walked around our road with a walking stick and a young male companion. Such an interesting film of a very famous performer in her era.
Many thanks for posting. We enjoys the work of such celebrities so very much, but to live a life of celebrity can become so toxic to the person himself or herself.
Thank you so much for posting. Such a fabulous woman, actress, singer, dancer. I adore her. Jessie Matthews had a superb voice and what a beautiful face.
Thanks Maureen. Yes, but it's a pity so many things went wrong, from her personal life to her professional one, particularly the missed opportunity to dance with Astaire. John.
I have long believed that there would (should) have been a dream partnership between Jesse Matthews and Fred Astaire. I will always remember her tossing cares over her shoulder!
She used to visit a friend of ours in Handsworth west drive and they said she had a very nasty streak in her if you didn’t bowl to her superiority and leaving her daughter nothing in her will just show’s the real person inside
I met Jessie matthews while on holiday in Ostend ,Belgium in the early 60s,I was with 3 other school friends and she was staying in a hotel where we met up with some girls I danced with her and played harmonica with the dance band they had there at the time ,she was a lovely lady and very friendly,it was the highlight of my holiday,I remember it as if it was yesterday.Peter Downes Winchester Hampshire.

I always thought she had one of the most wonderful voices
Thank you for posting this somewhat sad story but her musical films are her legacy.

Did you know Jessie has a Facebook page dedicated to her - she’s certainly not forgotten!
