You could just use the velcro command strips to hang the wooden straight edge, install the letters one by one (with the bottom side of the letters touching the wood), then just remove the wooden straight edge..

Yes, the 3m command strips have a tab sticking out from the bottom that if you pull slowly on, will remove it from the surface.
