It's always nice to see other people's knives, I was a knife collector long before I was a leather worker! Sometimes people have sent me a production knife of theirs and I've liked and so I've bought one for myself, other times if it's a custom knife then it's just nice to see them.
I've been watching your videos for the past week or so while I'm at work. I plan on attempting a gun holster for myself. Every time I need information on leather working, you have a video for what I need. So, once I get set up with tools and hardware, I will be sending you a donation for sure. Give me some time, it won't be any time soon, but I promise, a donation will be on its way, and possibly a series of donations, since you have put together the most complete set of leather videos.
great video, even for experienced leather craftsman, old man told me one time and it goes like this "if you don't learn something every day your not paying attention
All of your videos are super informative. I was a little intimidated about trying to work with leather at first. But your videos have been so helpful with seeing what I need to do and what I should avoid. Thanks for giving us such a valuable resource.
Excellent video! Im newbie at this but since I make knives I figured i better learn to do sheaths. I got buddies that do it but they live far away which involves shipping etc so time to do it myself. I can say your videos have helped me immensely. Again much appreciated and keep em coming!
For thicker leather I see grommets which are similar to eyelets but they come in bigger sizes, have two pieces, so look good from either side. Judy good from both sides.
hi wonderful vid tyfs one question i purchased a line snap with a rose bud on top. whats the best way to protect/cushion the rose or other fancy snap top whilst attaching the snap part to it tyia
Try to find a smaller rivet ..There are the old style with just a peg that you hammer down to create the cap. If they are all you have, make sure you are hammering straight down and the rivet is standing straight up with solid strikes. My mentor did not like to use a setting rod or cup and simply would strike a rivet flat on a mini anvil with your standard rubber mallet.
Great videos! What is the name of the hardware that looks like a metal countersink for a screw? I've seen them on several sheaths, specifically Hedgehog Leather where the accessories are removable. It doesn't look exactly like a Chicago Screw. Thanks.
Iv made a leather bracelet and want to add a fixing to fasten it so looking at snap fasteners but I want to see if anything else about , would you recommend the clasps called lobster claw ? O OK r are they too lightweight
Hello Ian. Can you tell me where you get your waxed threads and or what brand? I'm needing some that is 1mm in width, flat and various colors. Thank you.
I noticed some craftsmen using washers and such on the back side of eyelets and rivets and those kinds of things.. How would you source them as must washers are very thick at hardware stores, and when is it a good idea to use washers when making joints on leather pieces?
Great video Ian! Thank you! Just one question, you usualy make sheathes for different knives what was shipped to you by the clients, so the question is How do you look at client knives what you would like to but you don't have, maybe they are extra are custom made or knives what you just can't buy in store. Are you jealous at those guys who own these or those knives and what kind of sheath your knife have? B.r. Ivars.
Amazing video. In your previous one, you made a list of items you used in the video, and essentially which ones you'd advise buying. That list helped make my leathercraft investment worth it, and helped making finding deals online much easier. Would you be able to do the same thing and make a list in this video? It was very handy. Thanks much!
Nice tutorial video, ty m8! I got question though; i looked for places here in EU to buy those chicago screws and could only find Tandy with very few types and also high prices! Can you help out? where do you get them from? I am also on the process of creating my own knife sheat, and was wondering if there is such a thing like a hollow chicago screw? one that i could fasten in place and still be able to pass a cord through it thanks in advance if you know the answer (or anyone that does), i'm sure it may help others also with the same question
It may be a good idea to make a document (PDF) with this information. Will be quite useful. A comprehensive one could have a price and that would be fine.
+michael garbutt Either (1) countersink the underside of the leather using a large edge shave (e.g. Dixons no6) or a small French edger or (2) attach the stud to a small piece of thinner leather and stitch it to the thicker piece
Sniggering at "shaft"? I haven't got past "head", "stud" and "getting your strap on" yet. Excellent, informative video, a shame that I have the mind of a fourteen year old.
Hello mate, 1st question, how the hell does anyone donate? cant find it anywhere. 2nd question where and how do you get your leather? and where do you get your fixings from? im in the uk aswell, so should be able to find thess things for myself but im having trouble, and is there a video i cant find on making a sheath with a fire steel on it? keep up the great work all the best,
You can buy a dedicated punch called a buttonhole punch which is the easiest and neatest or you can use a normal hole punch and then add a small slit running into the hole
Considering how many people would actually buy one it's really not worth it, plus I don't have the money to get them made, plus there would be a drop in video quality, plus it'd just get pirated and stuck on a torrent website anyway. So no, I won't be making DVDs!
howdy your skill is great....i would suggest putting your vid on a compilation dvd and selling it to us lower skilled folks...IF you already have one - email back to me...

Wow. Nice and detailed video. 🙏

Hey stansbarber, what is that green measuring board you work on and what type of material is that? thank you !
Iv made a leather bracelet and want to add a fixing to fasten it so looking at snap fasteners but I want to see if anything else about , would you recommend the clasps called lobster claw ? O OK r are they too lightweight
Great video, thanks for the time you shared.
Great video, just wondering why did you not mention studs!

What size Sam Browne stud is on the knife sheath? thanks.
Thanks Ian for the info, I'm looking for the metal buckle for a mechanics belt. Do you know where I can find them.
I don't know what that is
@@Leodis.Leather I can't upload pictures here.
My rivets always get distorted when the post is 2 mm is above the leather.
Nice tutorial video, ty m8!

+zelgor zel LePrevo, Abbey Saddlery or JT Bachelors are my preferred sellers in the UK. They all ship to the EU.
I didn't notice this video, I always have trouble distinguishing the various snaps
It's just a standard cutting mat.
It may be a good idea to make a document (PDF) with this information.
Will be quite useful. A comprehensive one could have a price and that would be fine.
Ian i ordered some 15mm press studs but they arnt long enuf to got through 3.5mm leather. do you have any recommendations

Richard G I guess "socket" is the new ?
Great info .Tks
Great videos Ian! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, you've been a great help for me on many projects! :-)
Best wishes, Dave
my interner server was not letting me view them about 10 minutes ago, thanks for the reply

all the best,
I am in the UK and i have always known them as snaps
Hi Ian, great video. Do you use copper saddlers rivets? Just bought some and they seem much stronger and look great aesthetically
I do yes when it suits the project, they're overkill for a lot of things.
Would you make a video on them? (only if you want to.)
They are covered in build along video 4 I can't see how they'd need another video, there are plenty of videos of people setting them out there.
+Ian Atkinson Thank you for pointing me to it. And thank you for getting me into the hobby.
Excellent video of all the hardware needed. Can I ask what punch you used to make the eyelet for the Sam Browne studs?
You can buy a dedicated punch called a buttonhole punch which is the easiest and neatest or you can use a normal hole punch and then add a small slit running into the hole
Glove snap! baby glove snap!
Perfect , thank you.

Why would anyone giggle about a silent flexing of a leather strap around a shaft?
Brilliant
Considering how many people would actually buy one it's really not worth it, plus I don't have the money to get them made, plus there would be a drop in video quality, plus it'd just get pirated and stuck on a torrent website anyway. So no, I won't be making DVDs!
Excelente !

your skill is great....i would suggest putting your vid on a compilation dvd and selling it to us lower skilled folks...IF you already have one - email back to me...
On the next pay day 100 quid your way, i've paid more for less quality information!!
didnt laugh at "shaft", but did laugh at "strap on"... sorry, mate
