I don't get the hangup with the words "Communist" or "Conservative". Clearly Zizek is a critique of capitalism and markets and wants a new path forward that doesn't end up in the same problems as in the USSR and Maoist China, but the word communist is such a historically loaded term that while he uses it to describe himself because there's no other word that exists that accurately captures wanting to replace capitalism with a better system today, what his detractors are hearing is basically that he wants to resurrect the USSR.

They keep talking about Singapore without mentioning that the only resource they have is the land itself, and they nationalised it. Singapore has shown itself to not be afraid of removing or severely restricting free markets when they are deemed harmful to the well-being of the people. As far as I know, Singapore has had the same government since it’s creation in the 1960s. It is not a shining example of free market capitalism, but an example of tough utilitarianism and pragmatism. They have built themselves up using things that work, without paying attention to what side of the political spectrum they fall.

Timber is needed. With plantations you're saving the real forests, the "production" is controlled, so you get the right kind of wood. And the trees still absorb carbon dioxide.

Communist revolutions always starts with students and intellectuals because they can see and describe so clearly the corruption in the current order. Zizek needs nothing but someone who will occasionally steer him back on topic. People are angry at the conservative for his vapid criticism and questioning, but it's much better than most people who talk to Zizek. He'll ramble uninterrupted for thirty minutes if given the opportunity, but he's good at staying on topic for five of the thirty. Having someone to offer some surface-level and cheap push-back is very useful for him because it keeps him at least within the general proximity of the topic at hand.

In order to follow Zizek views and standpoints one must put her/himself into postion of various phylosophical schools starting from Sokrates/Plato/Aristotel to Kant, especially Hegel and people like Hana Arendt + few others of modern era. He is extremely well familiarized with many text, books and writings, I belive so much more than most of his oponents. Many of which seem and appear to be simplyfying him to the level where they are at, and basically not hitting the point. Maybe his theories and thesis seem ridiculous, but he is by far much smarter than all those who face him. He is extremely skilful in pulling many aces from his sleeve, be it from the field of phylosophy, sociology and especially psychology. I am unaware about his personal larger theories, and brakes through, although I have read some of his work, but as I said, he is super witty and sharp when it comes to compiling many various informration and using it to proof his claiming. To me he is much like ancient greek phylosopers, sofists, who kept wondering arround and about, trying to use their arguments against others by simply pointing that they have more to offer and therefore are right about what they say, and others are notoriously wrong. This particular guy is simply not at his level and therefore cannot lead a proper conversation. Zizek questions so many things and by just picking one aspect of his standpoints is a dead end.

Rather China should be compared to other large countries in the developing world - such as India, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico etc. Plus the larger a country, the more internal stresses and strains. If China was to move to a democratic free society. it would probably begin to fall apart. Which naturally would be music to the ears of China's great power rivals. And democracy and freedom have their successes, but also their massive failures in terms of Liberal social policies, particularly in large developing countries - i.e Modi, Duterte, Erdogan, Bolsonaro, Putin etc. I think we need to dispel ourselves of the delusion that democracy always leads in a progressive liberal direction.

Yeah you're right, Taiwan does have the same rate of upper band income tax, I meant Singapore. But lower corporation tax in Taiwan is still a factor in attracting inward investment. A tactic many smaller countries deploy around the world against their larger neighbours . Plus Taiwan has its defence needs taken care of it by the US. Saving it billions. And Taiwan in the post-war period received billions in Marshall Plan aid, plus it got very favourable trading terms with the US. As in free trade for America, protectionism for Taiwan. All of which was done in the battle against communism, which no doubt the US won in Asia and is still winning, however, at what cost to itself? It seems US workers have footed the bill for the great successes of Asian capitalism.

Identity politics may be influenced by some post Marxist, post modernist beliefs however I think they are mostly influenced by 70 years plus of extensive consumerism and market ideals. Erich Fromms concept of the ‘marketing man’ I feel goes along way to explain this. Some on the left confuse niche cliques for people power, confuse rights with power, confuse the fight for social justice with cultural hegemony. The host is very righteous and thinks he knows everything and can therefore successfully deconstruct Zizek. For this reason he thinks of himself as a genius. Years ago when I was a bitter teenager freshman in High School I was babysitting a younger neighbor while the family was out. We walked to the local library and went to a magic show for kids. It was friday night and I wanted to watch a movie on TV and instead I had to take this kid to the library. I knew all the gags behind the tricks. So I volunteered for to participate for one of the gags which involved a fake thumb and pulling a flag from "nowhere." As I shook hands with the magician as part of the gag, I pulled the thumb off and the flag fell on the floor in front of a bunch of kids. The magician was a total pro and just steamrolled into the next gag and literally no-one recalled my shitty stunt of rebellion. At the end of the show, people shook hands with the magician and thanked him, the local librarian an older woman in her late 40s said "nice job" to me in a tone of voice that was flatter than a three-day-old-soda. I had to stick around and wait for my kid to shake hands with the magician. So I'm literally standing next to the man while the kid shakes his hand and is giggling. I couldn't even look the magician in the eye. He said nothing to me. And I deserved it for trying to take the magic away from everyone else, since I thought I already knew the answers-the only thing I proved was my own insecurity and how weak my spirit & character was when I was 14.

I don't get the hangup with the words "Communist" or "Conservative". Clearly Zizek is a critique of capitalism and markets and wants a new path forward that doesn't end up in the same problems as in the USSR and Maoist China, but the word communist is such a historically loaded term that while he uses it to describe himself because there's no other word that exists that accurately captures wanting to replace capitalism with a better system today, what his detractors are hearing is basically that he wants to resurrect the USSR.
Hooga I think we need better education on economic systems. Because like, Communist and Socialist are often conflated, and socialist often just refers to the ML vanguard states when there’s a bunch of variations. Bernie Sanders is probably helping a bit with the nuance of socialist ideology, though I wish he would actually explain what democratic socialism is so people stop trying to pin him as wanting to make the USSR again (Yes I know he’s campaigning on a social democrat platform, but with his platform it would actually be useful to educate the country better).

A worker run state that controls the means of production is one style of socialism (Vanguard states), but you can also have worker ownership in the form of worker coops etc. with a weaker or nonexistent state, while communism goes much further and lacks any state, lacks money, and lacks classes. Singapore has shown itself to not be afraid of removing or severely restricting free markets when they are deemed harmful to the well-being of the people.
As far as I know, Singapore has had the same government since it’s creation in the 1960s. It is not a shining example of free market capitalism, but an example of tough utilitarianism and pragmatism. They have built themselves up using things that work, without paying attention to what side of the political spectrum they fall.

In Sweden and Finland we now have a lot of "forests". They are trees standing in perfect lines growing and waiting to be cut down. I don't call that a forest. I call that wood production.
Timber is needed. With plantations you're saving the real forests, the "production" is controlled, so you get the right kind of wood. And the trees still absorb carbon dioxide.
Jo Da plantations are not the same as forests in the sense the op was talking. There is comparatively no biological life going on in these plantations. You simply can’t exchange forests with these plantations in any sense more than just for industry or to decrease the rate of stagnation of carbon uptake.

If you let a forests grow and cut timber in a sustainable, small scale manner they may have a better diversity - species richness - than a plantation.

In order to follow Zizek views and standpoints one must put her/himself into postion of various phylosophical schools starting from Sokrates/Plato/Aristotel to Kant, especially Hegel and people like Hana Arendt + few others of modern era.
He is extremely well familiarized with many text, books and writings, I belive so much more than most of his oponents. Many of which seem and appear to be simplyfying him to the level where they are at, and basically not hitting the point. Maybe his theories and thesis seem ridiculous, but he is by far much smarter than all those who face him. He is extremely skilful in pulling many aces from his sleeve, be it from the field of phylosophy, sociology and especially psychology. I am unaware about his personal larger theories, and brakes through, although I have read some of his work, but as I said, he is super witty and sharp when it comes to compiling many various informration and using it to proof his claiming.
To me he is much like ancient greek phylosopers, sofists, who kept wondering arround and about, trying to use their arguments against others by simply pointing that they have more to offer and therefore are right about what they say, and others are notoriously wrong.
This particular guy is simply not at his level and therefore cannot lead a proper conversation. Zizek questions so many things and by just picking one aspect of his standpoints is a dead end.

Comparing Taiwan with China, is like a massive non sequitur. Something like comparing a village to a city.
Small countries with smaller populations, can slash taxes and still cover state budgets, that is by becoming tax havens. All they have to do is attract capital flight, and the tax take is enough to cover health, law and order, pensions, education and the like. Taiwan being a favourite destination for many of Asia's rich to deposit their assets, not least China's wealthy.
Whereas larger countries can never attract enough capital flight to cover state budgets. Even if every billionaire moved his money to China, it still wouldn't cover China's vast public expenditure. Hence China has a 45% top rate of income tax opposed to Taiwan's 17%
Of course pockets of China can achieve similar development to Taiwan, but not the entire country. All large countries see similar social, political and economic vicissitudes as China.
Rather China should be compared to other large countries in the developing world - such as India, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico etc.
Plus the larger a country, the more internal stresses and strains.
If China was to move to a democratic free society. it would probably begin to fall apart. Which naturally would be music to the ears of China's great power rivals.
And democracy and freedom have their successes, but also their massive failures in terms of Liberal social policies, particularly in large developing countries - i.e Modi, Duterte, Erdogan, Bolsonaro, Putin etc.

Plus Taiwan has its defence needs taken care of it by the US. Saving it billions. And Taiwan in the post-war period received billions in Marshall Plan aid, plus it got very favourable trading terms with the US. As in free trade for America, protectionism for Taiwan.
All of which was done in the battle against communism, which no doubt the US won in Asia and is still winning, however, at what cost to itself?

Zizek is indeed a communist but just for a sake of it. All in all, Zizek think that Communism today and then, either old school or new school, will not work at all. So what Zizek does is basically to challenge anyone out there to think about Communism again. Zizek always says this since his very early career, "don't act. Think!!!"

Communism is about holding powerful people responsible for the problems they cause, conservatism is about blaming those problems on powerless people.
Communism has always had a problem regulating the over arching power that holds everyone else responsible for the problems they cause.

Identity politics may be influenced by some post Marxist, post modernist beliefs however I think they are mostly influenced by 70 years plus of extensive consumerism and market ideals. Erich Fromms concept of the ‘marketing man’ I feel goes along way to explain this. Some on the left confuse niche cliques for people power, confuse rights with power, confuse the fight for social justice with cultural hegemony. Worst of all some confuse debate and enquiry for oppression and Nazism. I would argue that identity politics is far more a consequence of capitalism than any Marxist tract. Of course I could be completely wrong, nonetheless I think identity politics fails to provide a robust enough check on power structures. It’s too myopic, self centred and superficial to have anything truly radical to say. They don’t want everyone to have a piece, they just want their piece. Maybe I’m just talking out of my arse.

This Tyler Cowen sounds like a boomer without capacity for critical analysis. Seems to be more concerned with trashing China, than adressing capitalism problems.
I think the point is that communist countries have more problems than capitalist countries even by Zizek's own metrics. Zizek recognises this by not even trying to refute it. The question should be why doesn't Zizek have the intellectual honesty to admit communism is crap?

Years ago when I was a bitter teenager freshman in High School I was babysitting a younger neighbor while the family was out. We walked to the local library and went to a magic show for kids. It was friday night and I wanted to watch a movie on TV and instead I had to take this kid to the library.
I knew all the gags behind the tricks. So I volunteered for to participate for one of the gags which involved a fake thumb and pulling a flag from "nowhere."
As I shook hands with the magician as part of the gag, I pulled the thumb off and the flag fell on the floor in front of a bunch of kids.
The magician was a total pro and just steamrolled into the next gag and literally no-one recalled my shitty stunt of rebellion. At the end of the show, people shook hands with the magician and thanked him, the local librarian an older woman in her late 40s said "nice job" to me in a tone of voice that was flatter than a three-day-old-soda.
I had to stick around and wait for my kid to shake hands with the magician. So I'm literally standing next to the man while the kid shakes his hand and is giggling. I couldn't even look the magician in the eye. He said nothing to me.
And I deserved it for trying to take the magic away from everyone else, since I thought I already knew the answers-the only thing I proved was my own insecurity and how weak my spirit & character was when I was 14.

Adis Šabović Very true, though I do personally know people who understand that communism involves things like a lack of a state, lack of money, lack of class structures, etc. but don’t feel that it’s a good idea regardless, often because they simply can’t wrap their heads around it (These people also tend to be socdems who think that a reformist approach to something like democratic socialism wouldn’t be that bad). It’s also interesting that there are people who fully agree with the foundational elements of socialism/communism but are put off by the name

On state or statelessness: there is absolutely no human need for state as such. Shut down (all) states - who's gonna protest? Right, it's the etatists. They don't exist without it. It's like an addiction. They don't know any better. And as long there are "other humans" with their states you need yours to defend yourself from "other people's" influences on you through their states. Money? Military? Classes? Same thing.
To communists - state (money, military, class etc.) is an necessary evil, nothing more. :)
Unless a country is advocating most of its citizens become permaculturalist agrarians they cannot be said to be environmentalist or part of the solution to the ecological crisis. The only nation I know of that has made deliberate efforts in this direction is Sikkim in India.
