    I don't think I like Decade the show, but Decade the character and Masahiro Inoue's performance is so good that he kind of brings the show together even if the writing is really bad.

      Agreed. Like Zi-O, it has a cool concept, but I don't think anniversary series are toei's strenght

    • @ManOutofTime913
      @ManOutofTime913 Год назад

      @@crowhogan6854 That's an inevitability given that they would have to get the actors back for cameos since the characters are so integral to the series in question. Decade actually had the right idea of not trying to do that and just doing it's own thing while paying homage to the series' that came before. Unfortunately they mucked up the ending something fierce, but c'est la vie.

    I do believe they explained why they’re best matches in Build. Essentially in the memory of Evol’s host, he asked what’s some of his favourite things which in turn made him say all his daughter’s favourite things, seeing as he loves her so much. Then he asked what would perfectly destroy them, giving answers like Tanks for a Rabbit or Gatling Guns for a Hawk. At some point in that talk he realised “Oh shit, he’s up to something” so he gave him runaround answers like “Y-Yeah, a Comic Book is definitely the thing to beat a Ninja... yeah...” to throw Evol off. So that’s why some of them make sense like “Yeah! A Tank could easily destroy a Rabbit! Time is the only thing I know to 100% kill a turtle since they’re so durable and live to an old age! Ever see Ghost Busters? Electromagnetic Equipment will beat a Ghost!” And some are throwing Evol off like “Uhhh... So you have Ninja... they can be beaten by Comics? And uhh, OH! That Octopus I mentioned? Could totally be beaten by a light, yep!”

      Things like this made me think its the writer trying to work around the restrictions the toys themselves presented and how to justify within the show's lore. For what its worth, I liked what we got and it is a pretty darn good explanation but it doesn't take away how random or unnecessary fullbottles were as a gimmick other than toys.

    • @mouthyschannel2474
      @mouthyschannel2474 2 года назад +2

      @@jamesfzy Or arguably how bad the toy line was in general.

    • @DragonxFlutter
      @DragonxFlutter 2 месяца назад

      @@jamesfzy This is something I see more and more often in Rider shows post-Ghost. They end up making so many gimmick toys for so many potential forms that it ends up flooding the show/toyline. The worst offenders are Build (too many Full Bottles), Zi-O (which is slightly more understandable, given the circumstances), Saber (too many books of incomplete sets), and Revice (same as Zi-O). I get that it's more likely that the toys are made first, but they really should take into account how the show is gonna advertise them (though I do like an idea used in one of Vulcan's fight scenes; he uses Gatling Hedgehog for a weapon attack instead of for a form change).

    2. The original introduction of eiji in the w movie and to be brutally honest the TaToBa henshin jingle really interested me. I then started watching ooo and recently actually rewatched it once more (I've rewatched it 3x). I've still enjoyed it and still do to this day

    Haven't watched the whole video yet, but I just wanted to comment that Agito's choreography and stunt-acting are some of the best in the series. The stunt actors do a fantastic job of bringing out the personalities and fighting styles of the characters to where it never crosses your mind that it's two separate people. Agito also has the best use of CGI in all of the Heisei shows as it's almost always used in conjunction with practicals and still mostly holds up.

  • @ManOutofTime913
    @ManOutofTime913 2 года назад +12

    One of the things that makes Ex-Aid so good is that Emmu starts off a a doof that does prat falls and you think he's going to be a fairly reactive protagonist like Eiji from OOO, but he actually turns out to be incredibly proactive and starts planning stuff out ahead of time with and without telling the audience. Honestly, I'm debating on whether or not he's too perfect, lol. Everyone else in the cast is great too of course, but he really stood out.

    • @Tazer_Silverscar
      @Tazer_Silverscar 2 года назад

      That's actually the one thing that throws me off about him. He's a doctor. How often do you have a doctor, especially a pediatrician, who is that much of a doof? Maybe I was just thinking too much about it, but ugh, just didn't feel right. The choice to use a lot of garish colours for the riders (like pink and neon green) made my eyes hurt.

    • @ManOutofTime913
      @ManOutofTime913 2 года назад

      @@Tazer_Silverscar I think you are thinking a bit too much. I've noticed this pattern with a lot of later Heisei shows where they start off goofy and then make the Ryuki transition into serious later. I think they're trying to rope in kids with a wacky intro while appeasing their older fans with the rest of the show. The only ones what didn't from what I remember were Ghost, which was awful, and Build, which got extremely awkward every time they diverged into comedy and went back to serious immediately after.
      The neon colors didn't bother me. Like pretty much every Rider show, the strength of the writing was enough for me to get over the hump of the costumes. The vis-fx didn't bother me either. I actually think the video game theme helped a whole lot with the unreality of everything. The overuse of CGI shockingly tied into the story and aesthetic for once.

    Ryuki is honestly a love or hate kind of show. It is probably one of my favorite seasons because of the cast of characters, and I really do love the story, even if it got a little shaky towards the end. Great list, was fun to watch.

    • @ManOutofTime913
      @ManOutofTime913 2 года назад

      I don't love it or hate it. It's the most middle of the road of the middle of the road rider shows.
      It really just needed another concept in the plot than 13 people needing to kill each other for it to end so it doesn't feel like it's dragging its feet by focusing on anything else and Shinji Kido's pacifist stance doesn't feel like a waste of time other than as a catalyst for Ren's character growth.

Like, it's honestly a really relatable story of growing up and figuring out what you want to do with your life by looking to your elders for inspiration, and I love the horror elements of the series, It borders on Garo levels of creepy at points. The studio meddling really killed it though. I can see why the lead actor swore off returning.

    @evanartist8060 2 года назад +9

    My all time favorites of Heisei are a bit generic, but my feelings are all the same. Top 3
    3.) W. One of the first Rider shows I watched, I loved the characters and the mystery elements of the show, it is, to this day, one of the VERY few shows to ever make me cry, and it has so many aspects of it that affected me as a writer, and I take a lot of influence from it when writing.(especially a Toku/KR themed Fantasy book I’m writing)
    2.) Ex-Aid. Holy crap this show is FUN, the characters are so enjoyable, GOD DAMN KUROTO. It could be serious, it could be goofy, and everything just worked and made sense. It also helps that I’m a huge gaming nerd. Still think it’s awesome they made Gashats and forms for official Namco games in that one special.
    1.) Gaim. My first Rider and the one that holds a special place in my heart. I hold very similar opinions about it to TJ’s, but it just hit me in a way that no other show had ever done before or after.
    Not gonna go into as much detail, but my worst three are:
    3.) Decade. Not to say this is a bad show, cause I actually enjoyed Decade, the cast, and dear god Tsukasa, I love this man and every time he returns in anything is a good day. Yet at the same time…it felt so rushed, and the fact there really wasn’t an ending, the show just kinda…stopped, hurt the show hard for me.
    2.) Ghost. Wow this show bugged me. I actually hate it less then other people, and if this was a list of EVERY Rider, Saber would be in this spot and Ghost would be 3, but it’s only Heisei. Conceptually, Ghost is really damn cool. Execution? NOOOOOPE. It’s like it forgot what the hell the themes and ideas of the show even were half way through! THAT BEING SAID, I did like the cast a bit more then others and why I’m not one of the people who scream bloody murder when Takeru or Makoto come back, cause I do like them. Somewhat. Same with Onari. I actually remembered his name which should show how much I liked him.
    1.) Zi-O. This show…multiple times…gave me headaches. No other show has done this to me before. While I will admit, it was REALLY cool to see a bunch of old Riders again and actually get continuations of some of their stories, and the concept of the Another Riders were cool…this show feels so non-sensical! It felt like it constantly, CONSTANTLY would introduce rules that were so complicated AF that they never fully explained them, and then broke them all with just as little explanation! I still remember that there were a series of episodes that ALL broke the rules of how Another Riders work according to the beginning of the series, and NONE of the characters even remotely acknowledged it or thought it was weird, until it was just randomly pointed out one episode and never brought up again! The only other positive thing I can say about this show is the Future Riders(except Ginga cause WHAT THE HELL!?), I love those guys and still want Shinobi to have a full series. He deserves it. Also Woz was fun.

    The problem with Build for me was just kind of throwing away the concept of splitting Japan into three countries. We only visit the other two countries once and the second half of the show just forgets about it for the most part. It certainly had great character work, though.

    • @DragonxFlutter

      Build also just completely forgets that the three regions have their own Full Bottle sets. They spent so much time focusing on the first set that, by the time they got to Region 2 (and introduced Grease), it's like they realized the idea couldn't feasibly work within a span of 40 - 50 episodes.

    Kuuga - I really liked it though it hasn't aged well. The random power growth was nifty rather than a new toy of the fortnight.
    Agito - I wanted to like it but found it kinda dull and depressing with all the bad endings characters get.
    Ryuki - I remember enjoying this show but it was still kinda meh. Not sure if i'm still gonna try and get the SH Figuarts of all the Ryuki Riders... I've got around half of them iirc. Dragon, snake, ray, minotaur, tiger and rhino. So that makes Bat, phoenix, crab, gazelle, swan, chameleon & maybe dark dragon.
    Faiz - Favourite Heisei Rider even if the writing was iffy, with all the characters never just TALKING TO EACHOTHER!!!
    Blade - I liked this series despite the bittersweet ending.
    Hibiki - I enjoyed this show much more than i thought i would. The latter half did feel off, the villains were never explained and the final battle was a cop out.
    Kabuto - Cool designs; kinda boring show. Also where the hell did Dark Kabuto come from?
    Den-O - Really good series that REALLY overstayed its welcome
    Kiva - Same as Kabuto. I liked the designs but the plot was dull.
    Decade - WTF even happened in Decade?
    W - Great show, one of the best.
    OOOs - Another favourite of mine. I really like his design.
    Fourze - Thought this would be a dumb & unfunny school comedy but it turned out to be pretty great.
    Wizard - Like Kabuto & Kiva; cool designs let down by a meh plot.
    Gaim - Conceptually stupid but brilliant in execution. Whoever thought fruit samurai would be such a hit?
    Drive - Pretty decent show. Just wish i could get a Break Gunner for a good price...
    Ghost - Same as Kabuto, Kiva & Wizard. Didn't help that i had a lengthy period where i couldn't watch it, so much so that Ex-Aid was half done, that i kinda lost interest. I still finished it, like i have all of these, but it was a meh ride.
    Ex-Aid - I quite enjoyed this show. Dangerous Zombie looks badass and Cronus is OP.
    Build - Pretty great show and i have no idea how to do an impression of Stalk/Evolt.
    Zi-O - Decent enough show that kinda blue ballsed the audience by never showing some of the forms.
    May as well do Reiwa too since there's not that many:
    Zero-One - Pretty decent show but the tail end really got messed up by The Global Bastard.
    Saber - Good show though i've still not seen the ending yet due to the Zenkaiger crossover.
    ReVice - Haven't started it yet as i need to finish Saber first. Looks neat though.

    34:30 So what you're saying is, the concepts are a BEST MATCH? No, wait, that's the next season.
    My listing is pretty close (omitted series I have seen or haven't finished)
    A - Kabuto, Agito, W, Gaim, OOO [Kabuto was my first series in addition to being quite good, so it can RIDER JUMP to the front in my book.]
    B - Blade, Kuuga, Decade, Den-O [I think this shuffling is just different preferences in tone, same for the shuffling up in A tier.]
    C - Kiva, Faiz [This row is tough. Kiva was overall more consistently fun, but while I kind of want to rank Faiz higher because of some moments I REALLY liked in the second half/last third, it just dragged its feet at several points throughout - and I've never been one to mind a slow burn. So if I, of all people, think you're dragging your feet - pick up your dang feet!]
    D - Hibiki, Fourze, Ryuki [While I kept up with Fourze as it was released something about it never connected with me and may have burned me out slightly such that I fell off Wizard about half-way through despite enjoying it way more, so I rank it lower than Hibiki which didn't super connect with me either but never felt like a chore to finish.]

    Personal list in response.
    Kuuga: S Tier. The more time goes on, the more I find that I appreciate Kuuga more _because_ it’s slower and has real stakes for the hero. And I love how Godai’s personality helps him stave off the side effects of the Arcle later in the series. I honestly think it’s more mature than the “mature” Kamen Rider stuff (Shin, Amazons).
    Agito: Sorry, TJ, but I gotta go D Tier. It may just be the amount of time that’s passed since I last saw it, but I still remember that Agito just left me confused and put off.
    Ryuki: If I was relying on pure Nostalgia, it’d be A Tier. But, as far as the story goes, I fully agree that D is reasonable.
    Faiz, Blade, Hibiki: I haven’t seen enough of these to form a solid opinion. I couldn’t get past episode 5 of Faiz and Blade, and I didn’t last long into the transition from Hibiki part 1 to Hibiki part 2.
    Kabuto: Torn between S and A Tier. Like Kuuga, I find that I enjoy Kabuto more over time. I feel like it was underrated and overlooked because of the smash hit that Den-O turned out to be.
    Den-O: Solid B Tier. I had fun with it, but I feel like its success started to set the formulas that we see today.
    Kiva: That was a fun series worthy of A Tier! I want to go back to it at some point.
    Decade: My first weekly upkeep, and it falls into C Tier. I always knew Decade somehow got screwed in production. And Headcanon: Zi-O’s world is also Decade’s world. It’d make sense.
    Double: Another split between S and A Tiers. Double was a kickass show and deserves its remembrance.
    OOO: I find OOO to be an A Tier also. It _would_ be S, if only for the fact that they never finished their cliffhangers. It was during OOO that it felt to me like they were trying to cash in on that MCU fanbase (Foundation X), but they never followed through on it because they got too heavy handed with the crossovers. Didn’t help that key actors suffered burn out by the time we hit Ex-Aid.
    Fourze: Yeah, I agree that Space Boi is C Tier.
    Wizard: B Tier.
    Gaim: S Tier. No contest.
    Drive: I can agree to B Tier.
    Ghost: D Tier. I liked the suits, I liked the concepts for powers, and I can tell you that the bald guy was names Onari and he could be either really fun or really cringe depending on the episode.
    Ex-Aid: S Tier! Absolutely!
    Build: Solid A Tier for me. They kinda over did themselves on the Full Bottles, but I did enjoy where the story went, I enjoyed that it was its own separate world for the first time in years, and I enjoyed the dynamics between characters. The only disappointment I had was that Grease never made an Ixa reference.
    Zi-O: Hovering between A and B Tier for me. It was definitely a better anniversary series than Decade, but I feel like they overextended on the Ridewatch concept.

      Eh. I would say that the actor for Sougou didn't do a bad job. I would say that the only real shortcoming is that they keep writing late teens/early 20s protagonists that are a bit _too_ shonen protag. You know, the "I'm overflowing with optimism" type. I miss the days of Kuuga and Kabuto, when the characters were young men (mid 20s) and were more experienced with life before gaining their powers. Something about them seemed like more compelling characters.

      I prefer Agito as well because of exactly what he said. Agito has a forward-moving plot and a mystery that's really interesting. Kuuga doesn't have much of a story if we're being honest. That series is mostly conflict escalation and any mystery is mostly related to Kuuga's abilities and slowly doling out information on the Grongi, as a species and not individual characters even, throuhgout the series. Agito originally was conceived as a sequel to Kuuga and as a sequel I think it did exactly what it was supposed to. It took Kuuga's concept, escalated it and made it better.

    14:24- 14:30 That’s me with Faiz and Blade, but reversed. I needed something more fun and good to cleanse the awfulness that is Faiz off of my brain.
    Lately I’ve been watching Faiz and Blade back to back (well since around August, but I stopped watching cause ADHD is SO fun!) Faiz has been awful for me, but Blade has been making that experience better

    Not a ranking but more my thoughts on each series
    1) Kuuga, i love the mystery and the incorporation of Grongi language. Ive watched it twice and always love the MC. For some reason, i cant find a version with the grongi subs as that was my fav version to watch. In 3rd or 4th attempts at rewatching, i’ve had a hard time getting into it.
    2) Agito, i finally got around to watching it last year and…. I liked it until the final arc. It was just too anticlimactic.
    3) Ryuki, the 2nd complete kamen rider series i ever watched. It I remember liking everything about it except the ending, i got confused. I also preferred the side characters more than the MC.
    4) Blade, i enjoyed the show the second time around. The beginning is a little slow. Has some of the cleaner designs. And i liked the deck theme
    5) Faiz, watched it 3 times! It just feels like a more complete Kabuto and i like the cast.
    6) Kabuto, felt like a more generic/flashy version of Faiz. I loved everything about it except the ending. Just confusing, odd, unfulfilling. I might be remembering it wrong tho
    7) Hibiki, while i will probably not watch it again for a while, it was pretty good. I liked the cast and the ending song. It felt very japanese and i liked seeing the japanese mythology.
    8) den-o, i hate this show… the MC is spineless and didnt care for the aesthetic.
    9) kiva, took a few tries to get into it. Once i did, thought it was really solid. I liked going between present and past. supernova is hype af.
    10) Decade, i need to rewatch it but the main theme is goated
    11) W, need to rewatch. Was good if i recall. I also love Kamen Rider Eternal/the actor/singer. This show had quite a few good songs.
    12) ooo, iirc was good? Its been too long to remember. I love the designs a lot. I especially liked the matching sets
    13) fourze, i couldnt get into it
    14) wizard, my first kamen rider show. I need to rewatch it. Gotta love L I O N ! LION
    15) Gaim was one of the best this era. It was silly but serious at the same time. I love the fruit weapons and the ending worked. Its one of the only kamen rider shows to always keep me on my toes.
    16) DRIVE, i love the theme. Couldnt get into it though. I also love the main theme. Same person who played Eternal
    17) ghost, never watched
    18) Ex Aid, i heard its good but i cant get through it. I hate the designs and the Miura Daichi has an annoying singing voice.
    19) Build, one the best theme songs. Was 10/10 until the ending. It felt like the story finished sooner than intended so they just kept padding it out with fake endings and ruining an otherwise great show.
    20) Zi-O! Love it. Theme is good, cameos are good. I love celebration titles. The ending was satisfying too

    If you managed to finish Ghost, you're a stronger person then me... I felt like Ghost, up to getting that first wish and Toukon Boost, was going in a particular direction and actually building up to something... but then the show just violently swerved like they changed writers and just got lost forever.

    • @ManOutofTime913
      @ManOutofTime913 2 года назад +1

      Even if Ghost had the best writers in the business, the budget and direction would have killed it anyway. That show is not only written terribly, it also looks terrible and has clearly recycled props and uses stock footage for transformation sequences (one of two series to do so). They couldn't even afford to use his pirate ship lizard for more than a couple episodes and that's just CGI. The entire series feels like a Producers style scam but for a TV show instead of a movie.

    I haven't seen a lot of KR as a whole but Agito is the tits. My major complaint is that the ending feels a little rushed and doesn't tie up the whole thing as well as it could have, but the slow-burn mystery was an extremely compelling reason to keep watching. I like to joke that Manifest is just a western version of Agito. (Although I absolutely feel that, with some tweaks, Agito would work great in the west as a standalone show.)

    I have similar thoughts on Ryuki. My problem is the protagonist, Shinji Kido and how his whole character is centered around stopping the plot from moving forward. The plot cannot complete until every rider except for one is dead and the only time the show veers away from this is the Alternative arc which goes nowhere. So, essentially, Shinji Kido's pacifism actively prevents the story from moving or getting interesting.

    I went back and watched all of the rider series I hadn't finished a while back. Wizard was the hardest to get through for me. It was just so boring because the series is building up a twist and it's so obvious what the twist is you're just waiting for them to get to it episode after episode and even after they finally do the reveal, the show doesn't even get that much more interesting. The best I can say is that Haruto is a good main character with a decent arc, but everything else around him kind of sucks.

      They could have tied it back to Showa and had the show be about revenge; that could have been cool. It would have fit too since that's the year the Kamen Rider Ichigo movie came out. There's a lot of things you could have done with a dead protagonist, and instead they basically decided to do W and Drive with none of the strengths (or the budget, my god) and all of the weaknesses.

    Now finishing the video, our opinions aren't too different. Agito, Blade, and Gaim are my three "A" or even "S" tier shows, so your list is certainly good with me. I'd give a little less credit to W and OOOs; thought those were just decent instead of exceptional. Drive would be a bit higher because despite the terrible opening episodes, as you said, the writing just keeps getting better and better and it becomes a pretty fantastic show with great characters on both sides of the conflict. Wizard would be an F because it was boring. Faiz would be a little lower too because of Kusaka and how much of the plot revolves around misunderstandings which is just kind of sloppy writing imo. Hibiki would be bumped to C tier because I really love the first 30 episodes even if the show falls off in the last 20. Otherwise, I think we more or less match up.

    Also I might as well throw in my opinion. Mine might make me look like a poser, but I believe Kamen Rider was at its best during the Showa Era. There's many many many reasons why, of which I'm not putting here but I just will say I strongly prefer the Showa Series.
    The Heisei series is extremely hit and miss, and mostly miss for me, but I will give my brief thoughts on the Heisei shows that I've seen.
    Kuuga, painfully dull, cheap and prototypical.
    Agito, definitely one of the greatest of the entire franchise, love the designs, fights and Riders.
    Ryuki, you put it best, Kamen Rider and Hunger Games do not mix at all.
    Faiz, don't dig the designs or monsters, and the characters constantly being at each others throats is a huge turn off.
    Blade, great Rider designs, great villains, and great action, but it's ending is a bit too bleak for my tastes, and continues Faiz's problem of the characters never working together for long.
    Hibiki, worst Riser series of the entire Kuuga to Decade Era. Don't like anything about it.
    Kabuto, absolutely an epic awesome kickass masterpiece. Phenomenal designs, action music and monsters.
    Den-O has moments that are entertaining and the inclusion of time travel is a huge turn off for me as it usually ends up turning everything into a total clusterfuck.
    Kiva, love the monsters and mix of tech and gothic roots, great action and music, but it's pretty jarring having 2 separate storylines in one show.
    Decade, also has entertaining action, but Decade himself is one unlikeable douchebag
    Double, fun show. Great action and effects and feels like a good blend of Kamen Rider and The Matrix.
    OOO absolutely awesome. Phenomenal effects action and music, one of the very best installments of the entire franchise. Probably second to Kabuto.
    Fourze, doubles down on the goofiness started on OOO, but is another one of my favorites. This is a good comfort show if I want a fast paced fun light hearted colorful show.
    Wizard, also has really great fights and effects, but outside of Wizard and the monsters, don't like anything else.
    And that's where I stopped. I haven't liked anything Kamen Rider has put out since Wizard. To me nowadays, Kem Rider is way too similar to Super Sentai, and I'm not a Super Sentai fan.

  • @DragoonMS

    Ryuuki...ugh...I think Dragon Knight was a lousy adaptation, but Ryuuki was even WORSE, somehow.
    Among my favorites are: Blade, Decade, Zi-O, & Kabuto. Annoyingly, the Kabuto movie (being a prequel to the series) and the Kabuto tribute in Zi-O (wrapping up Kabuto with Gatack FINALLY being approved by the Kabuto Zecter) are between useful to necessary for the overall narrative...something that several Heisei series from Decade onward have going on, actually. Especially Decade, the rest of the story IS movies, Den-O crossovers, and involvement in Zi-O. 😑😑😑

Faiz because Takumi and the rest of the gang teaches you important lessons throughout the whole show, nostaligia, and because Paradise Lost is one of the best Kamen Rider movies.
