- How does a robot dog learn how to dance? Adam and the Tested team examine and dive into Boston Dynamics' Choreographer software that was behind Spot's recent viral dancing video. We take Spot to the field to test a few of its dance moves and are mesmerized by its nimbleness! As we explore Spot's new movement abilities, we're starting to see a universe of possibilities for how adjusting its gait gives Spot more character and personality.
Note: This is not a sponsored video. Boston Dynamics has leased Spot to Adam Savage as part of their early adopter program. While Tested is chronicling some of Adam's experience with the robot, there is no obligation for Tested (or Adam) to publish videos, photos or media of any kind.

You should put a gopro on the top of spot, kind of like a first person look of what spot sees
Im happy to see that your happy adam i was so sad to see mythbusters go away but then early last year i found this channel and seeing how happy you are makes me happy 🙂 now after watching this im in such a good mood
I'm going to believe my question about how Spot is doing is what made you decide to post this video now. ;)
1) Can you make Spot do some pop n lock dance moves? :)
2) I wish I lived in a place where you can be enjoying a walk along a seawall and run into Adam Savage walking a robot...
Here's a big idea - try motion-capturing a real dog of similar size, and somehow translate those to spot-code. How "natural" could Spot look, wearing a big fur coat ?
that scene with the music, robot dancing, and adam just laughing is the best thing ive seen in a while
scratch that, when adam starts dancing it gets even better
10:03 that "good boy" pat when Spot fell over was just... really sweet.
The fact that Adam has a old wooden cane makes him give off major wise old sage vibes
Critter Jon he gives me Jurassic park owner vibes .
John Hammond in Jurassic Park
I'd be more surprised if he doesn't have a dinosquito-in-amber cane prop. How many dozens of canes do we estimate Adam has? 😂
stroll into my local GameStop
looking to pick up a copy of Binding of Isaac
grab the game and take it to the charming maiden at the register
"Pardon me, milady...but could you ring me up? A shame I don't have your number or I'd ring you up instead..."
she giggles and takes the game, blushing as her fingers brush mine due to my fingerless gloves
her eyes widen as she reads the game's title
"Wow, I've never seen anyone buy this before! You must have special taste!"
I smile and ready a witty response when suddenly a voice rings out from behind
"Hahaha look at what this ♥♥♥♥♥♥ is buying! That's not Call of Duty Advanced Memefare! What a piece of ♥♥♥♥!"
I quickly turn around, my cloak billowing behind me, to discern the source of the rude outburst
generic dudebro caricature with a sports team cap and "the guy that beat you up that one time behind the school in early October" shirt is standing there guffawing
"Excuse me sir...you may disparage my person if you wish, but it is untoward to swear in front of a lady."
"♥♥♥♥ you ♥♥♥♥♥♥!"
I smile quietly and tip my fedora low across my eyes, concealing them
"As you wish..."
I quickly swing my cane into his kneecap before he can react
he bellows and charges forward
I expertly sidestep him and the cashier screams as he crashes into the counter
I draw my sword-cane and mutter a quiet oath as I drive it deep into his back
"...requiescat in pace..."
As I clean my blade the girl walks out from behind the counter, twirling her hair with her fingers
"So...maybe you'd like to come over to my place to play that game sometime...?
"No thanks, milady, it's only single player. Besides..."
I sheath my sword
"You're not my type."
skate away on my Heelys
You mean old Savage
That Adam insists on referring to Spot as he/him instead of it is so heartwarming!
The closing shot is amazing. "Who's that, honey?" "Oh, don't worry, it's just Adam Savage walking his robo-dog"
perfect
Yea, I've made that scene a substantial part of the video, what would people say and react, it is really is amazing :)
I never thought anything would make me as happy as seeing Spot n Adam dance together
Especially with the cane around the 10:00 mark, Adam reminds me so much of John Hammond from Jurassic Park haha
Let's hope spot and his robot friends don't start eating people, then! :'D
I thought the same!
Just don't program it with any frog algorithms.
Good boy....🤣🤣🤣
The room they're in.... I would like to spend my life in that room. What a view!
I'm trying to figure out if they're really oceanside or if it's cgi
@@sandylee6943 at the end of a video there's ocean
That video is in Millbrae California. The view is of the San Francisco Bay looking at the San Francisco International Airport. At the very end of the video you get a quick peek at the Hyatt Hotel. I know that area well.
@@SirusStarTV it's actually the SF Bay.
Adam looks so cool with that cane, definitely can see him as a John Hammond for a Robotic Park
Ha!
Vicioso Cósmico that what I said !
Can't see any relationship between this video and Jurassic Park. Something something they could, something something they should... (;
@@CSNCSNCSN, "Can't see any relationship between this video, and Jurassic Park."
Old man with a cane, playing with technology which is not fully understood, and has the potential for great harm, for entertainment purposes. That's the relationship, and it's fairly obvious.
@@notahotshot whooosh
I just love how Adam dressed up to match Spot on set for today! Really brings another dimension to the whole 'dogs looking like their owners' trope!
Norm that was an excellent job programming man you’ve given spot a tactical jump.
adam's energy is really so pure. love him so much ever since the mythbusters days.
sit, roll over, destroy my enemies, dance on grave, bring me a latte.
They say you're your own worst enemy. I won't let the latte go to waste.
@@mmseng2 Nope-- I think we're getting a nice preview of our own worst enemy. So much fun, eh? For now.
@@MrChief101 it won't be our worst enemy until the government figures out how to use it against us.... And they will.
all the standard things you should teach your dog.
@@yubentrolled7097 We might have a nice time of interaction with only accidental mishaps. But look forward a couple centuries... hard not to see a very different machine intelligence.
Positing our survival, of course.
When Spot takes over the world he would not harm Adam because he taught him how to dance
Sometimes I wonder what Grant would've done with something like this in his hands rip
thats the first thing i thought. he would have had a blast i think.
Yeeeeees!
He would have perfected Robo-Grant.
teach it to dance.. :(
~weeps~ the REAL king of random, how we miss him
"That's a weird looking dog"
Adam: Spared no expense.
Underrated comment
I like when they gave it the cat like moves, even though it's officially SPOT
Gypsy Wagon Maker Space hey Data’s cat in Star Trek TNG was named Spot. Could go either way
I love their excitement! It’s so contagious.
I don't need their excitement, this is plenty exciting by itself. But it does help flavor it
Adams child-like joy makes me so damn happy.
Adam Savage in 1908: You are going to see me walking on a road with cars, I look comfortable with them because I am but remember, those are killing machines!
@no no Yeah, don't do this at home xD
@no no Because he wants to make sure people watching realize this machine truly is a piece of heavy equipment, like a crane or a bulldozer. With the joints and pinch-points, it would be really easy to get lax and lose fingers. If a wrong command is sent or the software glitches, it could do some real damage to a fleshy meatbag of a human.
Your comment about the loaded gun is very apt. Just like a loaded gun, it's completely and totally benign if you know what you're doing and handle it appropriately. If you get careless, even for a moment, it can end in great bodily harm or worse.
The disclaimer is to let viewers know that, while it LOOKS like they're just screwing around, they're all aware of what COULD happen, and they're treating the machine appropriately to prevent those accidents.
@no no These machines weigh hundreds of pounds and have motors strong enough to make it look like they're jumping effortlessly. If the guy on the controls presses the wrong button while you're near it, it could kick and break your jaw, crush your windpipe, take out your eye, or render you sterile.
@@FalconOfStorms Spot wights only around about 65 pounds (That's about the same as an adult golden retriever) and can lift only about 30 pounds. Where did you get "hundreds of pounds" from?
@@pafnutiytheartist I said "machines". Spot is not the only Boston Dynamics robot as I'm sure you know, and even the spot model could do a lot of accidental damage. Atlas, for example, is almost 200 lbs.
This might be my favorite Tested video of all time.
What an awesome room to be in, I want an office/lounge in this place.
After seeing all the variability, it mustve taken *FOREVER* to program that dance sequence...amazing.
It upsets me when I see the video posted, anywhere and in the comments people claiming CGI....
G C I know right :(
This makes me unbelievably happy. thank you!
Thank YOU for your comment!
The joy in this video is overwhelming and i am so very here for it.
Finally, i can have a robot shake its IO port at me

Can't wait for Boston Dynamics to collaborate with OK Go on a new music video.
Well now with the animation software they can program it themselves.
@@runvnc208 But OK Go tend to like to do things analogue and one take. I think Mark has an excellent suggestion.
@@PghFlip they've gone digital a few times. There's the one with all the drones. One had tons of computer printers.
I'd get down with it
That is such a brilliant idea omfg
I love that spot is this advanced piece of technology, and the software has all of this capability and we are all (including myself) SOOO fascinated with it just hopping in a circle lol
Adam, I just love watching you. Your child-like wonder is so contagious, and I am in awe that you seem to have the perfect job that so perfectly suits that inner child. Watching your videos always makes me smile.

Adam Savage dancing with Spot is the energy i wanna bring into all of this decade.
Though until now I never knew it, Adam dancing along with Spot is exactly what I needed right now. Thank you for that
_Why is this so wholesome?!_
My favorite move that spot did in the BD vid was the "on pointe" ballet moves
That, and the "tippy tap toes" move it does are my favorites.
@@jadestwrt thats called an on pointe ...
@@jacobellinger8027 It's different than the 'En pointe" where the legs are crossed and spot is rotating. The one I'm talking about looks like the opposite front and back legs tapping up and down quickly, like an excited dog, when the paws are 'tippy tappin'.
Very rarely in life do you see something that is both tear-jerkingly inspiring yet absolutely menacing when you begin to think of the potential applications. This is one of those moments
Wow, can you imagine how this could help people with disabilities. Give it 20 years and it be marketable.
Give it 20 years and it will be a full on programmable humanoid. With economies of scale these things could be on the scale of dishwashers and refrigerators in terms of affordability. Every middle class household will be able to buy one to fold laundry, cook, garden, and do all sorts of chores. Unfortunately, by the time this is feasible, the middle class will no longer exist.
Spot really is incredible. I'm not sure what people will do with this particular set of instructions, but...it's so fascinating to watch. You have such a reaction seeing a robot move in natural ways like that.
Seeing the apparent glee that Adam gives off made me smile.
Not sure what I love more, spot or Adam's uncontrollable excitement
Now I can use this video as proof for those who believe that Boston Dynamic’s dance video is CGI
It's so sad seeing all the idiots out there who think it was CG
Adam is such a class act! I love how he is so informative and exuberant in his sharing!
You're so lucky to be working with Spot. That's the coolest thing I've ever seen.
Whoever at Boston dynamics decided to let tested use spot is an absolute saint.
Adam's sheer joy and excitement learning about this technology is quite inspiring. I appreciate them sharing this with the world.
11:15 Doc: "i fear you need a hip replacement" 80-years old me: "finally.. i take what spot got"
Adam's energy around "spot" is absolutely amazing and contagious. Keep doing you Mr.Savage!!!!

thanks grandma
granny, where's my cookie?
Fun fact my grandma passed when you posted this.
The joy in this video is heartwarming.
It's weird how my brain sees some of those movements and is like, "it looks like cgi because that's way to fluid looking." Haha
The saying goes "You know it is real because it looks fake."
Because of the floor covering
Same. Generally you only see such precise movements in an animation, but no, this is really a machine that can be as precise as a computer generated animation.
The power and precision exercised by those servos is amazing. If that's even what they are.
I've officially found my new favourite video on the internet!
That port on the back with the loose cap on it, someone should make a tail attachement to that port to use instead of the dust cap/cover.
While a fun idea, it would then have to account for that little bit of extra weight
@@RNG-esus Tails in animals are used mainly for balance purposes, the fact that the robot is lacking one mean that it is limited a lot. Imagine what this robot can do once it has proper animated tail.
@@ac0rpbg I think he just meant a cheap rubber tail attached to the back for decor purposes. Although that might be a problem for spot because then it has to take account not only it’s balancing system but also run a physics simulation of a tail so that spot can have a accurate center of gravity.
I love these videos with Spot. Adam looks like a little kid, it's awesome!
Love this robot! Such a cool technology, like the RC cars I played with as a kid on steroids!
I don't even watch these for the tech anymore, I'm watching just for the absolute pure contagious Adam joy that comes with them lol
Now we need a robot dog night club
Farouk: "Are you ready? It's robot dancin' time!"
Adam dancing with spot is the most wholesome thing of 2021 so far
Spot's so friggin cute I can't wait till a model becomes commercially viable
I was amazed at the dancing video that Boston Dynamics released. The amount of programming and ability that went into developing a robot that could perform those moves and keep balance is pure brilliance! I can not wait to see what else you guys are able to do with Spot.
How long before this is put in a costume and used as a character puppet on a film set? That would be AMAZING!!!
Disney has been working on robot stunt performers for a while now (I think Grant from Mythbusters was on that team), there's videos of one doing spiderman acrobatics for a theme park. So it wouldn't surprise me to see them credited in Hollywood pictures soon.
The robots from interstellar were real. You can see behind the scenes footage of them on set.
I'm still convinced Fox's war of the world's series used spot or a version of spot. I mean... They look and move and sound so similar.
Didnt black mirror use them?
Universal Studios is already using a spot-like robot to do mini performances in front of crowds, she is called 'Latte' and is decked out to look like a steampunk pup. She can be 'spotted' outside of Toothsome Chocolate Emporium at Universal Orlando CityWalk.
I can sincerely say I'm not sure if I was more entertained watching Spot, or watching Adam.
everyone: spot!
me: imagining Norm and Adam singing Lonely island's "I'm on a boat" while spot dances in the background
Watching Adam dance with Spot is delightful. Doubly so when he’s imitating Spot’s moves. He’s clearly having such a good time. ❤️
I really want to see some "making of" videos from Boston Dynamics, regarding that dancefest.
So sweet seeing Adam dancing around with Spot, like he's playing with a flesh and blood dog and not a highly advanced robot.
Also, man, remember when it was so impressive just to get a robot walking at all? Now we have Spot grooving in an incredibly natural way. Technology is amazing.
*traveling back in time and being questioned*
"In 2021 have you colonized Mars?"
"No, but we developed a 4 legged robot that can twerk"
Mad Max takes place in 2021. I'm in for the Twerkobot...
I love that walking stick.
Oh, and Spot is amazing too.
And then a new profession is born: Motion Choreographer. 😂
That running man though, cracks me up every time when it does that 😂
0:58 OK! SHUFFELING ROBO DOGGO! I´ve seen it all my life is complete! LOVE IT!
As a former artistic skate dancer and instructor, I am especially impressed by Spot's movements. The most basic skating stroke - pushing off from one foot onto another - can be broken down into a series of twelve unique phases, each of which must be perfected for a strong and polished stroke.
I love the fact that Spot is still learning, just like the skater who performs and competes beautifully now, but will perform at an even more impressive level each year forward.
See spot run. Run on the spot. Spot can Run. Fun fun fun.
The boyish wonder within Adam is simply one of the most motivating things I've seen in a while. I've been following tested since it popped up after Mythbusters and I never get tired of the drive that Adam has brought to the world!
Thats such a nice view, a dancing spot at the seaside
When I was growing up, I would see some scientific advance and I'd tell my mother and be all excited, and she'd shrug and say, "what good is it?" I'd be so frustrated because I couldn't explain how much knowledge and training went into this, and this was just one tiny step forward. It wasn't until we actually landed on the moon that she realized how many tiny steps went into something so massive. Seeing Adam delighting in every step Spot makes gives me such joy, knowing that other people are seeing these advancements and celebrating them.
His dangling port cover is hilarious.
That full revolution was so crazy , so organic looking . Seeing a robot don't made it feel like crazy good cgi , like some corridor crew stuff . The slow mo sequence was absolutely golden
10/10
Man, I love the future. I couldn’t tell if the thumbnail was a CAD model or the real thing. Graphics processing has come a long way.
Adam, this is probably one of the most cool videos you've made to date. Well done good sir!
The complexity explains why I can't dance. I need a skilled programmer.
It’s called a choreographer.
Jaw was literally on the floor watching those final spins.
us: Why is the classroom next door always so loud...
the classroom next door:
Something incredibly relaxing about the set and just getting to play with your robot dog
Adam Savage : We're being incredibly careful when we're around Spot.
Offline TV : Let's push him around and drop him in a swimming pool!
The ability of this platform to expand its capabilities over time on the same set of hardware with improving software is one of the things which makes this remarkable.
Adams kids watching this. "Oh, he's Dad dancing again..." :D
I don't know how profitable it is for you guys to make a video of you literally just playing with spot but it's incredible fun to watch! Thank you! I love the idea of using this for Spot personalities! Movement styles based on mood :) 👍
"I say let's throw him a bone."
"Wordplay: my exoskeleton resembles a canine; canines enjoy bones. Amusing on two levels."
Well this covers my serotonin needs for today. Thanks!
I love how is message at the beginning is kind of like a "dont try this at home " but then realises who the hell can afford this, no ones trying that at home haha
Norm looks so at home, Looks so much fun playing with Spot
Adam is using a walking cane and I'm abruptly reminded that my favorite Mythbuster is older than I'd like him to be
I thought he just had that to beat the robot with.
I think it’s just a dancing prop, because he never uses it to walk with.
Spots movements now appear much more organic and that opens the door to many possibilities...
Imagine if he could automate those moves while listening to a song or something like that
I love watching him evolve and become more expressive!
Getting Island of Dr Moreaux vibes from Adam in this video!
This is so cool! I'd never imagined this level of flexibility with this robot
It's awseome and creepy at the same time. I wonder how the future will look, if we may have actuall robots walking in the streets.
Robot dogs dancing 16 hours a day...
Trust me, in 20 years robots walking through the streets will be the norm, drones flying over your house to deliver a package will be the norm too
That is some fantastic dancing there, so life-like!! And Spot, he can dance too...
6:06 real boomer energy right there ahaha

You’ll be surprised if you use the touchscreen enough when you walk up to a laptop you instantly think oh I should just click here for me all my computers and tablets are touchscreen so when I use someone else’s device I get confused for a second.
