  • Antonio Vivaldi's "Gloria" is usually sung by mixed choirs, but did you know that its original performers were the residents of the Venetian Ospedale della Pietà, an all-female orphanage? This is a complete recording of the chorus's historically informed concert, accompanied by baroque orchestra.
Women's Voices Chorus is a 65-voice ensemble in North Carolina dedicated to performing choral works by and for women.

I'll be doing this in Carnegie Hall Nov 9-Nov 14, 2023. Thanks for posting it. Good study guide! The last time I did it was in 1980 with the Reno Nevada Chamber Orchestra SATB

Contrary to popular myth, the ospedale rarely took in orphans. Most were the daughters of Libro D'Oro families, or the bastard daughters of nobility, and were quite well-funded during their stay. As they matured, the goal was to either make a well-dowered marriage, or have them stay on as teachers.

This is not a baroque orchestra and hardly a historically informed performance, please change the description.

lol. Some people are so full it it. This can be classed as a baroque
orchestra. Simple dynamics (loud and soft), and the use of the small
stringed orchestra to accompany voice was typical of late baroque music
which makes sense cause Vivaldi was late baroque. Don't let your ego and
your little knowledge turn you into a obnoxious person.

What happened to the sound at the end of Laudamus Te (9:28-9:58)? Spoiled it somewhat for me.

Хор звучит очень плоско. В нем явно не хватает мужских голосов, - басов, теноров, баритонов😮.

The issue is not whether the "Gloria" should be sung by a women's choir or by a mixed one. The issue is whether this performance is all that spectacular. I'm sorry to say that it isn't. I agree with Ed Herold that the touchstone of the concept of an only women's choir is the performance of the all-women's choir at the Ospedale della Pietà in venice (see RUclips ruclips.net/video/cgaOVV4JQHA/видео.html), which also happens to be a magnificent video experience (let alone the production values, the colors etc.) This performance is okay, but nothing more. Definitely too operatic, for my palette with zero camera action.
