You know he has about the same musical talent as the rest of the people on the screen?
🤣

Lol!
My mom: those guys are all so good...are they brothers?
Me: 😑

Kkkkkkkkkkkk
lol I felt that too
I love modern worship but I gotta say the old hymns hit different. 🙌🏻🙌🏻😭😭
Ah, but which old hymns? There are some pretty dry ones!🤣
@@DavidWesley The ones that we still sing 😉 Old school “chart-toppers” lol.
Holy, Holy, Holy can never be replaced 🙌🏽. I agree brother.
@@viviennewest7861 Amazing Grace is my all time favorite. Hits me every time. “Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved” 😭
The old hymns are the best
I miss the older songs being sung in church. I loved singing in the choir and singing with a congregation that you could harmonize with and actually hear everyone singing. This was a blessing brother. Thank you
Still happens at my church, but doesn’t have to be an old song!
Same. That's why I like when our church sings "It is Well" because it's probably the most singable hymn there is.
💯
I agree. Years ago, I attended a woman’s retreat and I didn’t know one of the songs. Finally, I saw “Just As I Am” on the program but then it was totally jazzed up….
My brain: Wow that song is that old?
My brain: Wow, that song is that new?
My brain: Man, I haven't heard that one in a long time.
Thanks for the informative trip down memory lane!
same feeling here...😂
That was my reaction!

I definitely know what you mean on those first 2, at least :)
What have I learned?
That worship music is timeless. I didn't even realize how old some of these songs were until I saw the date!
Same! Just the first one, Be Thou My Vision, I know and still sing. Very suprising and comforting in a way that we still know and sing those old songs.
Ehh. I wouldnt say timeless..
Same
@@juliochavez1308 ?? Why EH? Maybe not eternal timeless, but definetely timless classic, never looses it meaning and value.
@@rachelclapper9762 you personally assign them value and meaning....
You aren't singing the Gospel... the Gospel pours forth from you. What a voice God gave you.
I lost my daughter in august and have been in a really dark place. This video helped uplift me tonight when I was incredibly low. One of my best friends sent it. I knew them all and have missed the beautiful old ones. I only hear churches sing the new songs now. Thank you for helping me tonight.
Glad to be of service. 🤗
May the God of all comfort, comfort and wrap you in his everlasting arms of love. So sorry for your loss. 💐
Keeping you in prayer. It’s challenging and all I can do is ask the Lord to see you through.
When you were a church kid and you can sing along to every song.
Amen to that
Meeee haha
Right!
After amazing grace yes, but before I was completely lost

This just proves that Christian music never goes old, it's timeless.
Rachel Pamorada or just that the 6th-17th century took all the christian music bangers
I agree Boski...the songs all used to be about God saving us, His amazing grace, talked about sin, salvation, how we were unworthy of his love and mercy...now it’s all like “you love me no matter what” and I’M WORHTY of your love, the songs are sensual instead of reverent, and there’s nothing about repentance anymore, but the road is still strait and narrow and sinners still go to hell unless they REPENT of their sins and believe in Jesus. So sad to see the transition, the downgrade of society throughout the ages.
The message is still as relevant today as it was 2000 years ago!
Fax tho
And he didn't even include any Bach, Vivaldi or Mozart which would make the list even more impressive
i've watched this video too many times to count, but i thought i'd do some timestamps for reference :)

17 years old and there is not a video on RUclips that I come back to more than this one. Not only does it provide me with a dose of daily inspiration, but the video itself encouraged me to become more involved as a Christian. Thank you, Mr. Wesley! Blessings from Texas!
Glad to be of service! I hope you check out Evolution of Sunday School Music as well!
Are you evangelical?
That moment when you find out one of your favorite hymns is 1,500 years old
Just the poem the words are based on, alas.
@@DavidWesley I was wondering why you had that as the earliest hymn - bingo! Thank you for clarifying ~ God's blessings to you!
@@NoTrashInHeaven Even those words aren't the oldest. The oldest extant Christian hymn (tune unknown) is ascribed to Titus Flavins Clemens (Clement of Alexandria) possibly less than 100 years after the death of the Apostle John. It is called "Shepherd of Tender Youth" in English and is now over 1,800 years old.
Best song out of it all!
@@DavidWesley I was wondering why '500 c.e.' music had complex harmonies.
Glad that got cleared up.
That aside you are very talented. Keep up the good work!
God saved me from a suicide attempt. Months later blessed me with a sweet baby boy that completely changed and saved my life from a self destructive and lethal addiction to drugs and alcohol ❤️

These are all wonderful worship songs that I sing regularly (even if only in my quiet time), but the older I get, the more meaning and depth I find in singing the older hymns. ❤❤
I routinely come back to this video I've listened to it since you released it 3 years ago. I listen to it on the way to and from work. Anyone reading this, I pray one day we can sing this together in His kingdom. Keep up the good work brother
And I am looking forward for a Chinese one as well!
As I have been exposed to both traditional hymn based worship and contemporary worship in HK

Alas, only the beatboxing was done in one take. The others were stitched together (in a rushed fashion, however).

😂
@David Wesley your crazy I could never tell, it looks like one take for all parts
@@DavidWesley I'd sure like to know how you did that...also, you have great range brother! Really fantastic.!
I love the hymns! They cannot be replaced with the contemporary music of today. Hymns tell a story and are written from experiences.
The same can be said of many contemporary songs. Maybe you’re just not hearing the right ones?
I just showed your channel to my 90 year old mother. I picked this one to play for her first. You should have seen her. Dancing in her chair, tapping to the beat, rubbing her chilly bumps and sweetest of all, tears. 🥰❤️😍
Thanks for adding more meaning to a well spent life. Finding things that still move her is harder and harder to do. When I went to minimize the screen, she had a baby meltdown because she was scared she’d never find you again. I assured her I saved your channel and that we could come back anytime she wanted. ❤️✝️❤️
That’s so sweet! Thanks for sharing the story.
So beautiful. God bless both of you
He died for me.

My guitar teacher has a mostly blank pinboard on his wall and this is the only thing on it. Every time I read it, I love the quotes just a bit more. Is my favourite Christian quote.
What kind of great God “dies”?
@@Cryptic-jl3qz that's the point, he died in our physical realm, so that we can be with him in the spiritual

Wonderful! I am a Brazilian-Spanish christian living in Germany, I grew up in Spain singing the Spanish version of all these hymns in a baptist church, and now I sing them in German. It doesn't matter what language, they move our hearts so deeply and approaches us to God! My favorite is "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation" (the lyrics, Psalm 103, and the music, I just love it).
Born in 1999, and was raised in an old Methodist church that still had to open the windows and had an old buck stove in the middle of the church to keep warm in the winter. We sang old shape note hymns and quartet songs. Singing praises to the good Lord still brings my heart so much joy and happiness I can’t contain it.
Okay, RUclips. It’s been in my recommendations for a week. I’ll watch it...

Anyone else feel like these songs are timeless?! Some of them don’t feel this old, and some are literally ancient, and feel new. Interesting... just like Jesus, and His love for us. Was, is, and is to come. From the beginning to the end. This is one of the best videos ever.
I can still memorize the first song hahahhaha
The oldies need to be brought back! 😄
Hey yes! I thought Good Good Father would have been older
I'm surprised amazing gace been around for 4 centuries and it's still one of the well known to public
@@CutieRingoJoy right!? It's Annointed, the story behind it, where the song came out from one man's life was incredible. It had to do with an older time abusive bad slave trader who was brought up that way because of his dad because that's what his dad did, but his mother Actually very well Knew The Lord and followed Him, but she passed away when he was young. He later on though, while reading a Christian book over on the seas, came to be convicted by The Holy Spirit and gave his life over to Jesus that day. He kept slave trading, or well in the business, but now he did not transport them or abuse them, he just kinda handled transactions and things like that I think, but even later on he realized he needed to repent and get away from that bad area Completely and he did, and then I believe he became a Pastor on the mainland to the end of his life. He wrote Amazing Grace after he got Saved and felt Free from the life before then

I’m 15, but I personally prefer the old hymns. They just give out a different feeling than all of these new worship songs, as if the composers truly put their heart and soul into them
Someone from a different time or culture might say the same about the songs most meaningful to them. :)
David Wesley yea, I guess to each their own :)
Totally agree
Music changes throughout generations, but as long as the lyrics point directly toward Christ in correct Biblical context, it's all good.

I grew up with all of these older hymns ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
03:30 This song brings back memories of the ring ceremony in McCreery Hall at Sterling College, a Christian college in south central Kansas. The dorm residents would gather in a circle. The lights would be turned out. We passed a lit candle with an engagement ring attached around the circle while singing. It goes around the circle several times, then stops at the girl to whom the ring belongs. It was our way of announcing engagements.
Beautiful songs, beautiful music. Thank you for sharing your gift with this little old lady.
The depth of theology in the older hymns is immense. The older I get the more I appreciate it. This is beautiful
Alas, you must be listening to the wrong contemporary music if you think deeply theological worship music is dead!😭
@@DavidWesley Yes? I would love a list of songs that are about the words and less about the singer/music/listener. I know they exist, but found when I listened to them back in the early 2000s that frequently maaaaybe 1 song of an album might have a firm theological basis, and then only if you could battle through the music and singer's flair to hear the words. Frequently, popular groups might have 1 or 2 of these songs. It's why I gave up on new music. An honest request! Will be looking through your videos now too. Just discovered you and am so crossing my fingers to see more acapella with similar songs. This video is amazing.
David Wesley THE FIRST ONE IS SO HEAVENLY OH MY GOODNESS
@@DavidWesley Well, it's certainly in bad shape, that's for sure. Many songs don't even use the name of God, and are centered on the singer, not on the Savior.
@@DavidWesley yes I think it varies by congregation and worship leaders. We are blessed at my church with a blend of classic hymns and contemporary praise songs. Some the newer songs are taking hymns and adding a praise chorus to the arrangement. This arrangement was truly amazing.

I'm trying to read my whole Bible. Trying to read atleast two pages a day. Sometimes more. It shouldnt take more than 2 years. Sounds like a lot but it's hard because it's not just reading through, sometimes I pause and try to understand things a little better. I'll never fully understand. Trying though.
@@samuelmathews6120 i will be praying for you right now and as much as I can. J am not where I need to be woth God, I am losing my grip, uncontrollably stepping back due to my actions and siffering from mental illness but I want to be close to God as my mother was. I know you can do this and I am very proud of you.
To all who is reading please pray for me to overcome mental illness and get closer to God
@@michaelharris5256 all that matters is that you believe he is there. It's what I did. It's easy to pray for healing and for help. But lots of people rarely rebuke the devil in prayer. I learned something recently. The more precious you are to God, the more important you are to the Devil. People can live what they think is a good life because the devil isn't working against them because they aren't in the fight for getting close to God. If you pray, in your prayers, pray against the devil, I tell the devil he has no power over me because my protector rules over him. The devil always has to abide by a rebuking prayer when you use God against the devil. Man recently I've grown way closer to God. Just got out of a relationship that was bringing me down more than lifting me up. Alot of it was my fault. In my opinion if you aren't right with God and push on a relationship because of attraction or sexual desires, those relationships always fail. Eventually, they get bitter, the fights get more comfortable, as in way worse. The drinking is used to chill you out. To get away from what's serious. I wasn't an alcoholic or anything, but September 8th. I put drinking down to reevaluate my life. For one I was wasting so much money on it. Also the only time I spent time with people was to go out and drink. It's amazing how many friends want to hangout with me now that I am on this no drinking stint. I felt really good after a month. Didn't really have a set goal but wanted to last a month. After a month, 2 months went by, and then 3 months. Now I'm almost to 100 days. I probably won't stop drinking for the rest of my life but it really cleaned up alot of dirty in my life. I also put down smoking. If you find yourself drinking or smoking, try to give it a rest and see if you can last a month, and once you get to a month, try 2 months. I think from the month to 2 month period, I started seeing people and their drunkenness. I actually felt embarrassed because I lived that life going back as far as I could remember. And it makes me feel much better that I've calmed down alot and seeing drinking from outside the bottle.
Anyways, after realizing I didn't have many people to spend time with. I got into a church, (Christian, non denominational) and have been coming here for a couple months and 2 weeks ago just started to get rooted in the church and become a member. Slow process but what I hope to get into is helping by being a leader for the youth group. I feel like I can help you get kids with my story of how I got close to God and my obstacles and in turn I hope to learn from them as well.
I'm not sure your place in life with God right now, but he always has his arms open wide. The only sin I believe God can't forgive is taking your own life. One thing I've been fighting is sinning and knowing I'm sinning. I'm trying not to sin when I know I can just ask for forgiveness and be forgiven. Something inside me just sees that as wrong. But when I do sin, I always try to ask forgiveness and to make me either more aware of stronger in that field of sinning. One main one that has gone on for a long time is looking at porn. To me it seem less harmless than having sex with so many girls, which I use to. (Btw I'm 28, tall dark and what girls would say, handsome) so it's hard to keep away from what I know as far as drinking and girls. I have the biggest obstacle with that because I'm a captain of a Watersports company on a beach out here in Florida. It would be easy to take advantage of a girl down here on vacay. And I have done that over this last summer. (Ok let me clear up, take advantage as in concentual. My taking advantage of them on vacation and the fact that it's no strings attached sex and drinking). And though it feels good at the time. It slowly kills me on the inside. And there is no amount in which how much it kills my insides, my heart, my soul. It's never-ending. It can never be gotten use to unless you've never felt the power or know of the power of God. This goes with virtual porn, or real life porn. I've been doing better because I've only been filling my time in with reading God's word from the beginning. Alot is very pointless, and it's hard because I hate to read, but every now and then God will speak to you during reading of scripture and you will feel it and those are some pretty amazing feelings.
Like I said, I don't know what you are dealing with but God wants you back to get your back. Don't just pray, talk to God. Have a conversation with him. Try to read atleast 5 minutes of the Bible each day after you wake up, and also pray right after and tell me how better your days are. If your heart is in it and you are serious of knowing you need God in your life, he will listen, and he will work in you.
Remember, Jesus died on the cross for your sins. Jesus lived a life of no sin, when he was on that cross and asked God why he had forsaken him, it's because Jesus didn't know sin. Yet God still gave up his only son to die on a cross for every sin that man could ever do. Back to the suicide thing, I'm uncertain of where Christianity stands on that and being forgiving by that. I guess I kinda think of it like this, you can't cheat to get into Heaven, but if you could, one would think to ask Jesus into their life, ask to forgive them for what they were about to do, kill themself, and then bam! They're in Heaven now. I guess that's why I don't think that suicide can be forgiven.
I'm off to bed and idk if you could use a song to listen to of watch a movie. But a good song to listen to is called Everything by lifehouse. (Black background, white lyrics on youtube thumbnail) good movie, if you have Amazon prime, Interview with God. Goodnight bro.
What an amazing lady! It sounds like you are missing her. I'm sure she would be pleased if she knew that you were listening to these hymns and enjoying them. If you have happy memories, why not take yourself off to church one day? It wouldn't do you any harm! Blessings to you. :-)
I challenge you to pick up the tradition and read it at least once each year .
It is very telling how much more deep and meaningful the older songs were compared to the new. Beautifully done and love watching it again and again!
Plenty of deep modern songs as well, but the purpose of this medley was thematic and musical flow, not a best-of showcase.
Oh my goodness, gracious, this is amazing. I clicked on this, assuming it was a history video, but I found it's not only a history video but a beautiful piece of artwork as well. God bless you ❤
Amazing that a song written 1500 years ago is still so relevant, that we're still singing it in worship today.
Charli May it wasn’t. It was written as a poem in 533 AD, but the it was in Irish. It was put to music in 1912. It may have been used in monastic tradition as a song, but we have no way of knowing what it sounded like because we didn’t invent musical annotation until the 1300s.
Now thats going viral lol
So true

Good point.
As of November 2021, over FIVE MILLION VIEWS…..just stop and think of it!
Although many newer songs were included (and appreciated), I believe your subscribers hunger for another collection of the ANCIENT HYMNS…..Thanking God for your ministry, dear brother David!
Ah, but the modern songs on my channel are more popular. How doth one quantify this hunger of which you speak?🤣
I've watched this video many times throughout the past few years, it's so well done! The effort and time it must have taken to arrange and record this is unbelievable. Thanks for all the work you put into it 🙏🙌
Glad to be of service. :)
I was doing a chapel service in a prison and when I pointed out one of the hymns we sang was over 3 centuries old, one of the inmates responded, "300 years later you're still relevant. That's when you know you've made it in the music industry."
Worship should not be an industry!
@@KyleJonesDrJones When your primary take away from a joke is to focus on a single word and turn it in to a theological issue - one almost nobody in this comment section would disagree with you on - you should reconsider your approach to comment sections.
Goodbrew84 what???
I’m a Christian. Strayed so far from God and this absolutely brought me to tears..
Then you need to see my video coming out on Sunday. Watch out for “Lord Have Mercy” - it will be your new song.
que bueno ♡♡♡ Ojalá sigas así :D

I didn't know "Be thou my vision" was this old
Just the Old Irish poem the song was based on.
David Wesley and what’s that?
It's the 'Lorica' or 'St Patrick's Breastplate' also known as 'The Deer's Cry'. Originally written in Gaelic, it's a beloved hymn of the Irish Church. We tend to sing it with more of a lilt.
Same
@@jacquidickinson2559 A Lorica or "breastplate" is a type of Irish poem, of which this is one example, translated by Mary E. Byrne from the original Irish poem "Bí Thusa 'mo Shúile." It is possibly as old as C. 560 but more likely early 8th century or later. "St. Patrick's Breastplate" or "The Deer's Cry" is a different Lorica (rather than "the" Lorica) and is a translation of an original poem attributed to St. Patrick, "Atomruig indíu", which we sing in our hymnal using the translation "I bind unto myself today". They are both wonderful texts/translations matched with wonderful tunes but are two different poems.
Retired church music director here…thank you SO Much for taking me on an amazing journey. I loved every minute of it!
Much appreciated.
Praise and glory to God in highest, hosanna! Maranatha!!!
This is great! We're honored to be included in this David :)
My pleasure! I'm amazed at how many people this medley has reached (and that it caught your attention).
Wow this is awesome.

Your comment is the *Exact Words* I used when I shared w/100+ of my fb friends 😊💛
Hillsong Worship the song he did (oceans) it’s my faveeee!
Why is it that when a video is related to God all the comments are nice and happy and praising and then when we get to another video we spread hate? Me included. Let’s just agree as a community of Christians that we won’t spread hate on RUclips at least 👌🏼👍🏻
Agreed
So true
That's good!
Hear!, hear! 👏😐👍

God of Wonders is one of my all time favourite songs, and you sounded AMAZING singing it! 💫
So timeless is music which praises God!
Regardless of how old and what genre, there is one thing that will remain: Worship is for our God!

I typed a comment on this video 4 years ago. My faith has gone downhill greatly since then, but I still love to return and listen to this
Thanks for coming back. May your faith be renewed!
God is real bro. Seek Him out. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you. Watch the channel called Precious Testimonies. I promise it will renew your faith.
Praise the Lord for the praises to Him
Those 5 guys are so talented. I'm sure the guy holding the cards is the director. He's the mastermind behind these 5 men.
I think they're sextuplets
The lyrics of old hymns are so powerful. We need more songs like that in the future.
Plenty of songs today give the old hymns a run for their money in the deep theology department!
I share your point of view
So true! Praise the Holy name of Jesus that has saved us!
@@DavidWesley Sorry I have to disagree with you. or maybe many churches are not singing those "deep theology" newer songs. Most contemporary songs are designed for solo performance. The church in America is forgetting how to sing harmony. Many men no longer sing in church. God made human voices in a wide range of voices and then we sing only unison. Don't you think God might get bored listening to our Sunday morning monotones?
@@agplainsman music in general has kind of lost Harmony a lot of songs just have a drum beat and a singer and that's it. And that goes for non-Christian stuff nowadays too
For real one of my most favorite youtube videos ever! Didn’t realize that Revelation Song was from the 2000s, I thought it was way older. The Newsboys version goes HARD 🙌🏽🔥
I’ve been in churches at various stages of my life in which each of these songs were sung. I got saved around the “Pass It On” generation, and after that-for me-the music started to lose doctrine and became more emotion focused. I always love to hear the old hymns. In their day, they were a way for people to internalize scripture and doctrinal truths. I love the music of today, don’t get me wrong. But so many have discarded the beautiful old hymns. Thank you for characterizing them so well!
There were plenty of hymns with questionable theology as well, and new ones that are complex and faithful. :)
Omgosh, YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD!!!! 👏👏👏

I was thinking the same thing. You could literally feel the worshipers throughout the annals of time singing each song. Great observation!

Wow this is incredible!! You did such a spectacular job on this 😁 I'm early 20s and it's amazing to see how much nostalgia many of these songs carry for me and also the amount I know well despite them being hundreds of years old... It's so cool how how I can connect with a song right now, in my walk of life, that was written for a time so long ago. Thank you for sharing!
Glorious is our only Lord. He is lifted up with holy fear, worship and praise now and forever and ever. May this video spread out the beautiful message of Jesus Christ’s salvation 🙏🏻
I find so funny that he had to record himself smiling at the camera making eye contact dropping signs for 8 minutes.

Can we just acknowledge how this video is 2 years old, has 4 million views, and has 18k comments and yet this dude is still hearting and replying to comments. That’s, well, I really do think that he’s able to do that through Jesus, honestly, most people would just let people comment and not even look at the comments unless their gonna do a Q&A.
