My brain: Wow that song is that old? My brain: Wow, that song is that new? My brain: Man, I haven't heard that one in a long time. Thanks for the informative trip down memory lane!
I agree Boski...the songs all used to be about God saving us, His amazing grace, talked about sin, salvation, how we were unworthy of his love and mercy...now it’s all like “you love me no matter what” and I’M WORHTY of your love, the songs are sensual instead of reverent, and there’s nothing about repentance anymore, but the road is still strait and narrow and sinners still go to hell unless they REPENT of their sins and believe in Jesus. So sad to see the transition, the downgrade of society throughout the ages.
Same! Just the first one, Be Thou My Vision, I know and still sing. Very suprising and comforting in a way that we still know and sing those old songs.
I miss the older songs being sung in church. I loved singing in the choir and singing with a congregation that you could harmonize with and actually hear everyone singing. This was a blessing brother. Thank you
I agree. Years ago, I attended a woman’s retreat and I didn’t know one of the songs. Finally, I saw “Just As I Am” on the program but then it was totally jazzed up….

I lost my daughter in august and have been in a really dark place. This video helped uplift me tonight when I was incredibly low. One of my best friends sent it. I knew them all and have missed the beautiful old ones. I only hear churches sing the new songs now. Thank you for helping me tonight.
Anyone else feel like these songs are timeless?! Some of them don’t feel this old, and some are literally ancient, and feel new. Interesting... just like Jesus, and His love for us. Was, is, and is to come. From the beginning to the end. This is one of the best videos ever.
@@CutieRingoJoy right!? It's Annointed, the story behind it, where the song came out from one man's life was incredible. It had to do with an older time abusive bad slave trader who was brought up that way because of his dad because that's what his dad did, but his mother Actually very well Knew The Lord and followed Him, but she passed away when he was young. He later on though, while reading a Christian book over on the seas, came to be convicted by The Holy Spirit and gave his life over to Jesus that day. He kept slave trading, or well in the business, but now he did not transport them or abuse them, he just kinda handled transactions and things like that I think, but even later on he realized he needed to repent and get away from that bad area Completely and he did, and then I believe he became a Pastor on the mainland to the end of his life. He wrote Amazing Grace after he got Saved and felt Free from the life before then
These are all wonderful worship songs that I sing regularly (even if only in my quiet time), but the older I get, the more meaning and depth I find in singing the older hymns. ❤❤
Beautiful! I teared up as I listened because I recognized all of the songs and realized Christians have been praising the same God with the same heartfelt emotion and worship for 1500 years. Thank you
17 years old and there is not a video on RUclips that I come back to more than this one. Not only does it provide me with a dose of daily inspiration, but the video itself encouraged me to become more involved as a Christian. Thank you, Mr. Wesley! Blessings from Texas!
I’m 15, but I personally prefer the old hymns. They just give out a different feeling than all of these new worship songs, as if the composers truly put their heart and soul into them
I had no idea that the songs I grew up singing were so many centuries old! I love that worshipping our Lord is absolutely timeless. This is just wonderful!
I hope you remember modern English is fairly recent and eighteenth century you could still understand despite the slight differences, seventeenth even more noticeable but still somewhat understandable, but before that you wouldn’t understand unless you know Middle English or early English if going further back...
@@NoTrashInHeaven Even those words aren't the oldest. The oldest extant Christian hymn (tune unknown) is ascribed to Titus Flavins Clemens (Clement of Alexandria) possibly less than 100 years after the death of the Apostle John. It is called "Shepherd of Tender Youth" in English and is now over 1,800 years old.

@@DavidWesley Yes? I would love a list of songs that are about the words and less about the singer/music/listener. I know they exist, but found when I listened to them back in the early 2000s that frequently maaaaybe 1 song of an album might have a firm theological basis, and then only if you could battle through the music and singer's flair to hear the words. Frequently, popular groups might have 1 or 2 of these songs. It's why I gave up on new music. An honest request! Will be looking through your videos now too. Just discovered you and am so crossing my fingers to see more acapella with similar songs. This video is amazing.
@@DavidWesley Well, it's certainly in bad shape, that's for sure. Many songs don't even use the name of God, and are centered on the singer, not on the Savior.
@@DavidWesley yes I think it varies by congregation and worship leaders. We are blessed at my church with a blend of classic hymns and contemporary praise songs. Some the newer songs are taking hymns and adding a praise chorus to the arrangement. This arrangement was truly amazing.
Born in 1999, and was raised in an old Methodist church that still had to open the windows and had an old buck stove in the middle of the church to keep warm in the winter. We sang old shape note hymns and quartet songs. Singing praises to the good Lord still brings my heart so much joy and happiness I can’t contain it.
Times and Styles have changed, but God has not. Jesus STILL saves. There will always be a people who proclaim His Goodness, His Reign and His Saving Grace.
For all those panicking about the COVID-19 epidemic, God wants you to know he is there. We *will* get through this. However, we all should stop telling God how big our problems are, and instead tell our problems how big our God is.

I was doing a chapel service in a prison and when I pointed out one of the hymns we sang was over 3 centuries old, one of the inmates responded, "300 years later you're still relevant. That's when you know you've made it in the music industry."

I'm trying to read my whole Bible. Trying to read atleast two pages a day. Sometimes more. It shouldnt take more than 2 years. I know you can do this and I am very proud of you. To all who is reading please pray for me to overcome mental illness and get closer to God
@@michaelharris5256 all that matters is that you believe he is there. It's what I did. It's easy to pray for healing and for help. But lots of people rarely rebuke the devil in prayer. I learned something recently. The more precious you are to God, the more important you are to the Devil. People can live what they think is a good life because the devil isn't working against them because they aren't in the fight for getting close to God. If you pray, in your prayers, pray against the devil, I tell the devil he has no power over me because my protector rules over him. The devil always has to abide by a rebuking prayer when you use God against the devil. Man recently I've grown way closer to God. Just got out of a relationship that was bringing me down more than lifting me up. Alot of it was my fault. In my opinion if you aren't right with God and push on a relationship because of attraction or sexual desires, those relationships always fail. Eventually, they get bitter, the fights get more comfortable, as in way worse. The drinking is used to chill you out. To get away from what's serious. I wasn't an alcoholic or anything, but September 8th. I put drinking down to reevaluate my life. For one I was wasting so much money on it. Also the only time I spent time with people was to go out and drink. It's amazing how many friends want to hangout with me now that I am on this no drinking stint. I felt really good after a month. Didn't really have a set goal but wanted to last a month. After a month, 2 months went by, and then 3 months. Now I'm almost to 100 days. I probably won't stop drinking for the rest of my life but it really cleaned up alot of dirty in my life. I also put down smoking. If you find yourself drinking or smoking, try to give it a rest and see if you can last a month, and once you get to a month, try 2 months. I think from the month to 2 month period, I started seeing people and their drunkenness. I actually felt embarrassed because I lived that life going back as far as I could remember. And it makes me feel much better that I've calmed down alot and seeing drinking from outside the bottle. Anyways, after realizing I didn't have many people to spend time with. I got into a church, (Christian, non denominational) and have been coming here for a couple months and 2 weeks ago just started to get rooted in the church and become a member. Slow process but what I hope to get into is helping by being a leader for the youth group. I feel like I can help you get kids with my story of how I got close to God and my obstacles and in turn I hope to learn from them as well. I'm not sure your place in life with God right now, but he always has his arms open wide. The only sin I believe God can't forgive is taking your own life. One thing I've been fighting is sinning and knowing I'm sinning. I'm trying not to sin when I know I can just ask for forgiveness and be forgiven. Something inside me just sees that as wrong. But when I do sin, I always try to ask forgiveness and to make me either more aware of stronger in that field of sinning. One main one that has gone on for a long time is looking at porn. To me it seem less harmless than having sex with so many girls, which I use to. (Btw I'm 28, tall dark and what girls would say, handsome) so it's hard to keep away from what I know as far as drinking and girls. I have the biggest obstacle with that because I'm a captain of a Watersports company on a beach out here in Florida. It would be easy to take advantage of a girl down here on vacay. And I have done that over this last summer. (Ok let me clear up, take advantage as in concentual. My taking advantage of them on vacation and the fact that it's no strings attached sex and drinking). And though it feels good at the time. It slowly kills me on the inside. And there is no amount in which how much it kills my insides, my heart, my soul. It's never-ending. It can never be gotten use to unless you've never felt the power or know of the power of God. This goes with virtual porn, or real life porn. I've been doing better because I've only been filling my time in with reading God's word from the beginning. Alot is very pointless, and it's hard because I hate to read, but every now and then God will speak to you during reading of scripture and you will feel it and those are some pretty amazing feelings. Like I said, I don't know what you are dealing with but God wants you back to get your back. Don't just pray, talk to God. Have a conversation with him. Try to read atleast 5 minutes of the Bible each day after you wake up, and also pray right after and tell me how better your days are. If your heart is in it and you are serious of knowing you need God in your life, he will listen, and he will work in you. Remember, Jesus died on the cross for your sins. Jesus lived a life of no sin, when he was on that cross and asked God why he had forsaken him, it's because Jesus didn't know sin. Yet God still gave up his only son to die on a cross for every sin that man could ever do. Back to the suicide thing, I'm uncertain of where Christianity stands on that and being forgiving by that. I guess I kinda think of it like this, you can't cheat to get into Heaven, but if you could, one would think to ask Jesus into their life, ask to forgive them for what they were about to do, kill themself, and then bam! They're in Heaven now. I guess that's why I don't think that suicide can be forgiven. I'm off to bed and idk if you could use a song to listen to of watch a movie. But a good song to listen to is called Everything by lifehouse. (Black background, white lyrics on youtube thumbnail) good movie, if you have Amazon prime, Interview with God. Goodnight bro.
What an amazing lady! It sounds like you are missing her. I'm sure she would be pleased if she knew that you were listening to these hymns and enjoying them. If you have happy memories, why not take yourself off to church one day? It wouldn't do you any harm! Blessings to you. :-)

@@DavidWesley Sorry I have to disagree with you. or maybe many churches are not singing those "deep theology" newer songs. Most contemporary songs are designed for solo performance. The church in America is forgetting how to sing harmony. Many men no longer sing in church. God made human voices in a wide range of voices and then we sing only unison. Don't you think God might get bored listening to our Sunday morning monotones?
@@agplainsman music in general has kind of lost Harmony a lot of songs just have a drum beat and a singer and that's it. And that goes for non-Christian stuff nowadays too

I showed this video to the choir director at my church, he had the highest grin on his face the whole time, and noticed he was sub-consciously “directing” the songs about halfway through. Just so cool.

UoU The Splatling Girl OuO Yea I’ve seen it become super popular lately in the RUclips algorithms. Not sure what for. Did someone do something with it? I know Hillsong United has brought it back a few times
03:30 This song brings back memories of the ring ceremony in McCreery Hall at Sterling College, a Christian college in south central Kansas. The dorm residents would gather in a circle. The lights would be turned out. We passed a lit candle with an engagement ring attached around the circle while singing. It goes around the circle several times, then stops at the girl to whom the ring belongs. It was our way of announcing engagements. Beautiful songs, beautiful music. Thank you for sharing your gift with this little old lady.
One thing I noticed is that the hymns written before 1900 are all hymns which a congregation can sing. The more recent songs are intended for performance by a soloist or a small group of singers. Allowing the whole congregation to participate in singing praise to God was one of the key contributions of the protestant reformation. There are certainly modern hymns that a congregation can sing but untrained, unrehearsed singers are most comfortable with a tune they have heard many times before.
That's my biggest goal as a music director is to make sure I only do songs that are good for congregational singing. There are modern ones that are good for that and some traditional hymns can be quite challenging.
I think it’s more like older hymns used four part harmonies and the like to create more of a diverse sound whereas today’s music uses guitars, basses, and different tones on amps or keyboards instead. Many of today’s songs can still be sung by a congregation. I’m on my church worship team and we do a pretty good mix of contemporary music and old hymns
I wish regularly that my church worship leaders would lead us through something we could ALL sing. The hymnals at least had sheet music so you could tell better what the melody would be even if you'd never heard it before. I would love This is the Day, Unto Thee oh Lord, king of kings and lord of lords, I've been redeemed, River of Life, When the Saints go Marching, Go out With Joy, and several others, but it seems like their bored with it. One pastor rebuked the audience for requesting other songs and said it was our job as "the choir" to follow the leadership of the praise team. I don't mind the music, the drums guitars and pianos or other instruments but I want to be able to SING to the Lord TOO! I want to praise and dance and celebrate like Miriam at the shore of the Red Sea after the Hebrews were saved. I love many of the more modern praise and worship songs as well but they are harder to sing and harder to learn. I also dislike turning a 2.5 minute song into a 15 minute praise aerie or interlude especially when praise and worship already feels like 99 songs about God on the wall..... I'm not trying to complain, but as Praise and worship leaders it seems like their obligation is to lead the CONGREGATION through songs that help everyone equally pour out their praises not the praise team only. If they want to show off their skills maybe hold a Church concert once a month.....or something. I'm also disappointed that they are PAYING for copywrite use of songs created by mega churches that have questionable doctrinal teachings. Seems contrary to what Jesus would have wanted. Pretty sure if he showed up and saw them selling books or CDs or t shirts extorting other churches for using songs supposedly written for God ....he would have been chasing them around with a home made whip.
I remembered the song OCEAN the only song that plays while Im reviewing for my Dental Board Exam, and now Im a licensed dentist, i bring all the glory and honor to God. 🤗 proud to be a Filipino Dentist
@Porter Maxwell I agree that God wrote the best songs through the Psalmists! But, even though Be Thou my vision in English was translated much more recent; the original written in Ireland does date back that far. :)
@Porter Maxwell How do you know that? Even the Psalms we have in the Bible are a subset of those written and they were still written by people and the tunes used written by people. Yes they are God's words too but through people which is why different parts of the Bible are in different languages and different degrees of use of those languages. And I bet folks were writing songs to worship God well before David. Using folk tunes and instruments, dancing, clapping and having a whale of a time.

Anyone else feel like these songs are timeless?! Some of them don’t feel this old, and some are literally ancient, and feel new. Interesting... just like Jesus, and His love for us. Was, is, and is to come. From the beginning to the end. This is one of the best videos ever.
I can still memorize the first song hahahhaha

Hey yes! I thought Good Good Father would have been older
I'm surprised amazing gace been around for 4 centuries and it's still one of the well known to public
He wrote Amazing Grace after he got Saved and felt Free from the life before then
I love how you started and ended it with "Be THOU my Vision."

Are you evangelical?
I’m 15, but I personally prefer the old hymns. They just give out a different feeling than all of these new worship songs, as if the composers truly put their heart and soul into them
Someone from a different time or culture might say the same about the songs most meaningful to them. :)
David Wesley yea, I guess to each their own :)
Totally agree
Music changes throughout generations, but as long as the lyrics point directly toward Christ in correct Biblical context, it's all good.

The depth of theology in the older hymns is immense. The older I get the more I appreciate it. This is beautiful
Alas, you must be listening to the wrong contemporary music if you think deeply theological worship music is dead!😭
David Wesley THE FIRST ONE IS SO HEAVENLY OH MY GOODNESS

I challenge you to pick up the tradition and read it at least once each year .

God bless you brother. And whoever is reading this I’m praying for you guys
The lyrics of old hymns are so powerful. We need more songs like that in the future.
Plenty of songs today give the old hymns a run for their money in the deep theology department!
I share your point of view
So true! Praise the Holy name of Jesus that has saved us!
And that goes for non-Christian stuff nowadays too
Regardless of how old and what genre, there is one thing that will remain: Worship is for our God!
There are genres that are not acceptable unto the LORD

OMG TRADING MY SORROWS! I went to a Catholic elementary school and we played this all the time at school events (and Our God is an Awesome God)!!! Be Thou My Vision is my favorite song other than Shout to the Lord AND SOON AND VERY SOON MY FAMILY ALWAYS REFERENCES! I also did a ballet dance to Oceans man this is great!!!!
Edit: I’m so so happy you ended it with Be Thou My Vision again it’s my favorite aaaa
I didn’t start going to church til 2015 and I came to Christ in 2017 these songs make me feel so amazing! Thank you!
Wait until we get to sing these for our Saviour in Heaven with David! Be blessed! See you there!
0:00 - Man, 8 minutes long
End - That’s it??
Loved it!!
Can we just acknowledge how this video is 2 years old, has 4 million views, and has 18k comments and yet this dude is still hearting and replying to comments. That’s, well, I really do think that he’s able to do that through Jesus, honestly, most people would just let people comment and not even look at the comments unless their gonna do a Q&A. Props to you man. Praise the lord.
No biggie. :)
@@DavidWesley that was really well done, lovely harmonies and smooth vocals. I truly enjoyed that! Thanks for that. :-)
This is Amazing and really fun! Thank you!
Just watched it and I really like this. In this day an hour not a lot of people do these kind of Christian videos anymore but that was so cool keep making more videos please. You are the coolest man
Thank you for doing this! It's so refreshing. I love hearing my favorite hyms/worship songs in such amazing harmonies. God has truly gifted u. Thank u for sharing your gift. If u ever put together a collection of hymns/worship songs with full versions... I'm so interested in purchasing!
I showed this video to the choir director at my church, he had the highest grin on his face the whole time, and noticed he was sub-consciously “directing” the songs about halfway through. Just so cool.
Just think when we get to heaven and all the angels are doing something like this in unison with songs throughout the history of the world all in praise and worship of our Lord.
Love your comment. I want to be there. Stay blessed
Great comment I can’t wait to be there to be there with the angels in unison praising the lord god of heaven and earth
Exactly why I'm looking forward to being there
Yes!!!!
Wow that will be great :)
Thanks for your comment
Oceans is 2012? It feels like that song just came out yesterday😂
Heather Hershberger I felt the same way
That song felt like it came out in 2012
Heather Hershberger yea?
Heather Hershberger but I heard it before yesterday
UoU The Splatling Girl OuO
Yea I’ve seen it become super popular lately in the RUclips algorithms. Not sure what for. Did someone do something with it? I know Hillsong United has brought it back a few times
I really like, how every voice wears a different hoodie
03:30 This song brings back memories of the ring ceremony in McCreery Hall at Sterling College, a Christian college in south central Kansas. The dorm residents would gather in a circle. The lights would be turned out. We passed a lit candle with an engagement ring attached around the circle while singing. It goes around the circle several times, then stops at the girl to whom the ring belongs. It was our way of announcing engagements.
Beautiful songs, beautiful music. Thank you for sharing your gift with this little old lady.
I forgot how much of a banger Trading My Sorrows is

Same. It was my favorite when I was a kid and haven’t heard it in years.
I Hadn't heard it before I watched this video just now. It is soo good. They all are

How old are you guys? LOL
I wonder if anyone else here notices the subtle resemblance of these chaps.
It's the same guy! It's a software that mixes and combines the singer in different parts!

No dude.
Vic Adegboye I think he knows that. It was a joke😭😂😂
Hahaha! You ARE joking, right?

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever
I’m so blessed every time I listen to you! My mother would sing “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” to us every night at bedtime when we were little. ❤️
I think it is more accurate to say that worship is worship
Singing isn't the only way to worship
Dude this guy legit sounds like an organ when singing with himself. It's crazy my guy.
And it sounds so smooth
Lol
Austin Campbell for real, was thinking to myself this is not acapella i hear an organ lol
That's what I like about his harmony.
It’s because he is using a lot of auto tune. It’s not that impressive in reality
I remembered the song OCEAN the only song that plays while Im reviewing for my Dental Board Exam, and now Im a licensed dentist, i bring all the glory and honor to God. 🤗 proud to be a Filipino Dentist

This is awesome! Love all the songs. You should make an album of all the songs in total with all the parts you do so well.
My whole family listened on the way to church. 7 people aged 6 to 48 and we all liked the older ones better! 560AD being our favorite! GOD BLESS YOU!!
@Porter Maxwell I agree that God wrote the best songs through the Psalmists! But, even though Be Thou my vision in English was translated much more recent; the original written in Ireland does date back that far. :)
@Porter Maxwell if you post some songs from that era, I would love to hear them. Please link them here for me to enjoy! God Bless you!
@Porter Maxwell But, I can't sing! Sing it for me! 💖
I agree Luther’s hymns I like best
@Porter Maxwell How do you know that? Even the Psalms we have in the Bible are a subset of those written and they were still written by people and the tunes used written by people. Yes they are God's words too but through people which is why different parts of the Bible are in different languages and different degrees of use of those languages.
And I bet folks were writing songs to worship God well before David. Using folk tunes and instruments, dancing, clapping and having a whale of a time.
I love these hymns! I wish people would sing hymns more often in church, and this is coming from a 17 year old!
Amen
right!
I know, I really miss some of these, but now my church is mostly singing WGTS type things
My 13 year old loved this!! And I was able to share with her that Jesus of 560 is the SAME Jesus of 2020 and we have a beautiful conversation so bless you for that! Thankyou
Praise the Lord! 🙏🏻🙇🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻😄
So timeless is music which praises God!
