- Welcome! In today's video, we're diving into the world of Nikon lenses, comparing two of the most sought-after 85mm options: the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.8 S and the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G.
The Nikon Z 85mm f/1.8 S is renowned for its stunning image quality, compact design, and the advantages of being part of the Z-series with its excellent optical performance. On the other side, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G boasts a wider aperture, allowing more light in and providing that coveted background blur for professional portraits.
To put these lenses through their paces, I conducted a thorough test in various real-world scenarios, capturing both stills and video on a Nikon Z9. I explored the bokeh quality, autofocus speed, low-light performance, and overall usability in different shooting conditions.
Throughout my testing, I observed distinct characteristics of each lens. The f/1.8 Z lens demonstrated exceptional sharpness and autofocus accuracy, making it a fantastic option for portrait photographers looking for a lightweight and versatile lens. On the other hand, the f/1.4 G lens showcased its prowess in low-light situations and created dreamy, creamy bokeh, making it an excellent choice for those who prioritize ultimate depth of field control.
Join me as we break down the strengths and weaknesses of these two lenses, helping you make an informed decision based on your specific needs and shooting style. Whether you're a seasoned professional or an enthusiastic hobbyist, this comparison aims to guide you in choosing the perfect 85mm lens for your Nikon camera.

can you make a video test for 35mm lens ?
Sorry I don't have 35mm lens
Nikon Z 85 1.8 by far is the better lens.
Yep
85mm 1.4g is a nicer lens. its been tested and proven on paper to be better then the 1.8s
Yes 1.4g looks and feel nicer, but Z lens are better in anyway according to my test.
Not sure what paper you are refering to, but according to every review and test in existence, 1.8s seems to be a better lens in any way possible.
TY
Thanks for the visit.Yeah right? the new Z mount lens is better than the F mount lens in any ways.
Unfortunately Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G is terrible wide open. I hate this lens. I payed a lot of money to use it all time @ f 1.4 and there is no sharpness. sigma art f 1.4 is 5 times sharper wide open (but all Sigmas art have problems withautofocus)
Yep same here I paid $1600 for my Nikkor 85mm 1.4G
Sigma art lens are alright if you don't calibrate them they will miss focus a lot of the time.
