Slaine Mac Roth, a bonesplitter, a reddener of swords, a pruner of limbs who delights in redfrothed carnage. No welcome visitor. Not a friendly face. Your lives would be prolonged for getting out of his way. Excellent with axe and sword he is. Far from trifling the wound he gives with his ungentle, woe working weapons. Well damaged his enemies. Their tribes are full of vacancies. Another must read 2000ad comic for all comic lovers.
Personaly, story of the character and his world lore aside. What I find particulary compelling and well made is the aestethics of the character and the peoples of his world. Showing a well achiebed mixture between both the aesyetic and philosophocal elements of celtic culture and 80' amd 90's punk culture
I've read loads of Slaine comics. They're absolutely great. I think one of the best aspects of Slaine apart from taking inspiration from real mythology is unironically Ukko. Not only the character of Ukko himself but Slaine's friendship (and it is a friendship) with him enhances Slaine's character as well
His sword Blood prow is pretty amazing too. The art work , even through many artists , is always detailed and graphic. One of my favorites growing up. Thanks for the nostalgia Mr H.
Slaw-nyeh. 😉 I've loved this comic for over 35 years. Beautiful artwork. I especially love seeing how they adapted Old Irish literature and Greco-Roman accounts of the ancient Celts for their weird, late Ice Age setting. Shame there hasn't been a live-action adaptation (like they have with, say, Judge Dredd).
Would say Slaine is my fav comic book read, a close second is ABC Warriors. Lucky enough to have signed books and art by my fav Slain artist, Clint Langley....Biz also did fantastic work on Slaine.
Simon Bisley was who got me into the series. I used one of his Horned God drawings for my first tattoo years back. But Clint Langley, my god, what a talent he has. Spectacular style and details.
Kiss my axe! Killer characters, mythological influences, one-liners that would make Arnie blush and astonishing artwork to boot. Sláine is a must read.
The Horned God remains one of my all time favourite stories from the 2.000A.D. comics ... I think today after the success of Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit and the popularity of Game of Thrones , Slàine would easily make a epic transition from comic book to the big screen . I think both Dredd movies were 'dreddful' as far as a fan is concerned anyway. If I was a film director , I would love to make a movie of the legend that is Slàine MacRoth.
Start with The Horned God (collected), then do The Book Of Invasions 1 to 4. If you want more early stuff there is plenty (will get more background to him), but if you just what I think is the best, those 5 books should cover it.
2000ad the best comics ever!!! Strontium dog and Thargs future shocks were the best. but really enjoyed Slaine and the artwork was fantastic!!! more 2000ad please MR. H.
I remember Slaine as having these fantastically confusing inter-dimensional storylines that I was probably just too young to get my head around. Loved the Simon Bisley artwork, though! "He did not think it too many."
was always one of my favourite 2000ad characters, I once read somewhere his name is pronounced something like Slaw nee but everyone I know and me myself always say Slain
To bad you dont do these videos anymore. Maybe as a sideproject even. Its how I came in contact with your channel. Would love to hear your take on the Cythrons.
There was a pretty good Slaine graphic adventure game on the ZX Spectrum. That was where I first came across him. There were quite a lot of 2000AD games in the 8-bit era eg) Slaine, Nemesis the Warlock and Rogue Trooper.
Yeah! He more or less started due to the success of the Governator Conan movie in 82. "Yeah, do a barbarian story..." you can imagine in a British accent... BUT - they looked into myth and history including the (recent) discovery of "Doggerland" that until about 5000BC most of the land around Britain was above water and yes there are (reality) things being found there all the time. So they made a "Conan Clone" that wasn't just "Thud and Blunder" but grew on his own right. I read most of the early stories - crudely colorized - in the "Quality Comics" reprint in the USA. THEN I was BLOWN AWAY by the "Horned God" storyline that sent Slaine to super-stardom and helped spark the Comics revolution and boom of the 90s. Slaine was loosely patterned on a classic Celtic Hero CuCulian and then on stuff from early quasi mythic histories like the "Book of Invasions". And - as Mr H said - to try to go over all the stories would just be diminishment/spoiler. Go out and read them. I recommend highly "Slaine: The Horned God" - more or less middle of the series but was made so you could jump into the fray! Oh - for total awesomeness - youtube "Slaine The horned god" Some fan spent a TON of money, rumored to be $70K to make a trailer as if it was going to be made into a movie for real. And it looks FAR cooler than any movie out there today. It's gotta be made someday...!
Yeah, do a barbarian story..." you can imagine in a British accent... - Except Sláine isn't British , he is if anything Irish, and he isn't even that. Sláine draws from both Fionn McCumhail & he Cú Chullain. Also Sláine's character (going by the stories reference points) is not a Celt, he is Tuath De Dannan the mythological inhabitants of Ireland before the Celts.
@@chrisodriscoll3077 On the British accent I was more imagining some British EDITOR at a British MAGAZINE (2000AD) making the call. Lots of "Do a barbarian thingie" around the time Conan the Governator movie got released to make $. Slaine would definitely need to have an Irish tone though he was pre-Irish by thousands of years - but the person he's loosely based on was "The first man to set foot in Ireland" an ancient tribal king.
So many artists copied Simon Bisley's original work on Slaine. Suddenly that style was everywhere. I think Glen Fabry was the first to really do it justice though and vastly underrated compared to Bisley's more flashy style.
I love 2000 AD comic titles I have Slaine the book of invasions all 3 volumes and the horned god. I recommend 2000 AD titles to anyone who has gotten sick of the incursion of social justice in DC and Marvel comics.
Slaine Macroth, Lady Death, Judge Dredd, Nemesis The Warlock, ABC Warriors, my top 5 all time favorite comics. Lady Death is not 2000ad but she's the closest there is to the American equivalent of 2000AD
Yeah Slàine was one of my favourites from 2000AD. It mixed in a lot of the Celtic mythology we were taught in primary school. I used to love reading about the eternal cauldron re-animating the slain warriors and seeing it in all its glorious red gore was such a treat >:D BTW it's pronounced ( s-lawn-ye). I'm from Dublin and speak Irish
hey pal, the creator of the character has pronounced it slaine, I know the Gaelic pronunciation, but they have omitted it numerous times, hence why its okay to say either. as they made it and the character predates Gaelic lol
Mr H Reviews cool, good to know. I had fun showing it to my teachers when I was 10, I suppose these days I would be sent to counselling or something, aaaah the 80's such a simpler time :) keep up the good work :)
ha, your teachers clearly didn't have good taste, if they didn't know about it already ;) such a good comic, the newer stuff, is interesting, seem to have gone for a more hyper reality art style, which is a bit like marmite!
Mr H Reviews I remember how insane the art work was compared to ANYTHING I ever saw as a kid, I wasn't surprised when I learned that they were actual paintings rather than regular animation. Haven't read it in years though :(
An outstanding comic.....Slaine the horned god is such a great story....Would the be the ultimate blockbuster, but all i see is remakes and sequels of movies we all have seen already.
Still got 5 or 600 2000ad's at my old boys. He wants rid of them. All original in varying condition. Would they be worth much at all? They were certainly well read over the years. Enjoying your videos bringing back some great memories. Thx 👍

I can't remember the time or run but where he was on the cover of 2000AD with other giving the 2 fingers as they had not been captured and had their fingers chopped off (and so could use bows)....made me think that was definitely where the i sult came from? Slaine/school
That thing about Fomorians cutting off the fingers of their human captives was in a small time spin off called Scatha, about the She-Warrior, & Witch, who may have trained the Red Branch warriors. Only 8 episodes, before it was cancelled. You will never find this in 2000AD. This in only printed a local newspaper, a still authored by Pat Mils, and one of the Slaine artists Glenn Fabry. Reason why, you might have thought it was Slaine. The art work is identical to some parts of Time Killer & Slaine the King.
Yes, that was from Slaine: Lord of Misrule. A pagan retelling of Robin Hood, suggesting the insult was they still had fingers to draw back the bow string
He does not to my knowledge but does have some prophecy making him immortal until he becomes king or some curse from crom to not die and watch everything around him die
I learnt this the long way, but if anybody tries to ell you your Slaine as in dead, but according the Irish meaning for the word it anyways be that your very healthy or in good health like makes a toast while drinking or sharing a meal.
So he's like The Incredible Hulk only with a more scientific reasoning behind his transformation seeing how gamma radiation doesn't work like that. Slaine is Magic. Yep legit and scientific enough for me.
Who remembers the Hairy Snorkle looking dudes he used to fight? They had crossbows with a magazine of bolts that could be launched in rapid fire mode...
Skullswords, or Druneswords. They had to wear those masks with the breathing tubes because the couldn't stomach the odours wafting from their lord and master, Slough Feg. Seriously, take it from me, I used to work in a abattoir for seven months and you get used to the smell after a while. So, I guess you can tell who is of higher rank.
Played that game, didn't like it much and asked for refund (From Steam) it's like total no brainer since he could just walk around swinging that giant sword of his slaying everything left, right of him right off the bat.
vidstarr Berserk is not just a game. Berserk is a manga. It's a dark fantasy horror story. It's got breathtaking artwork and an epic story with very interesting and compelling characters. If you are a fan of dark fantasy and Lovecraftian horrors than Berserk is for you.
About the pronouciation, some people might disagree that it's wrong to say his name in perfect English, but when the comic is written that way, I guess okay.
I might object to your pronouciation Niamh, which I have learnt it said like Eve in Old Irish, but again, I guess if you can prove that the correct English way to say it by spelling it out the same way it's written, then that might be okay too. I used to just say Nam.
I have theory that Dredd is actually a clone ancestor of Slaine. Because he was cloned from the gene pool of Judge Fargo and that is such a Celtic sounding name. I suspect that the descendants of MacRoth moved to America some time , but his warped blood was so thin by then, that part of his blood lone died out. Just speculation mind you.
Not really, none of them are really, although there was Dredd, Strontium Dog and Rogue trooper X-over, but not all at once. I like to pretend that Slaine might be distant ancestor of Dredd. A long lost blood relative of Judge Fargo. Just tell the creators that, they might make a fuss & it does sound a little too convenient anyway. Like it's a small world after all.
Great video. One thing - “Niamh” is pronounced “Neev”
Slaine Mac Roth, a bonesplitter, a reddener of swords, a pruner of limbs who delights in redfrothed carnage. No welcome visitor. Not a friendly face. vidstarr Berserk is not just a game. Berserk is a manga. It's a dark fantasy horror story. It's got breathtaking artwork and an epic story with very interesting and compelling characters. If you are a fan of dark fantasy and Lovecraftian horrors than Berserk is for you.
The game is based from an epic comic book! Please do your research first!
So his has the wasp rage from Cu Cuhullon or how ever you spell it?
Kameron Dula Yes. Basically copy/pasted powers just a different backstory.
You'd be surprised how original he really is.
About the pronouciation, some people might disagree that it's wrong to say his name in perfect English, but when the comic is written that way, I guess okay.
when the writer and creator of the character confirms it can be said in either way, i tend to take his word lol
I might object to your pronouciation Niamh, which I have learnt it said like Eve in Old Irish, but again, I guess if you can prove that the correct English way to say it by spelling it out the same way it's written, then that might be okay too. I used to just say Nam.
nope, i completely got that wrong lol
Is 2000AD all the same universe or are they separate stories? What if Sláine and Dredd teamed up?
+Matt B separate universes. There are some cross overs from time to time, but sláine and dredd have never to my knowledge
Very interesting theory.
