I saw Rubinstein live five times, the first the same year as this broadcast. Saw him at a time when I had already heard his LP recordings of much of the repertoire I then heard him play live. This was an artist who needed an audience, an anti-Glenn Gould, to play at his best. Although he made many wonderful, even passionate recordings, generally his later discography of the Max Wilcox era is bland and doesn't do him justice. During the encores at a NY recital in 1968, when he launched into the Chopin Waltz Op. 34 No. 1, I turned in excitement to my companion and said, "He doesn't play it like this on the record!" Although the TV audio and the sound of the piano here are not first-class, the beauty of his tone comes through. Thank God this and the Moscow video survive; they show a new generation how compelling he was in person. (His appearances in the film "Carnegie Hall" and a TV documentary I find canned by comparison.) Thanks for posting this.
I agree with you that he was much greater in the concert hall. Here is wonderful Schumann's Carnaval in 1966

I had the chance to see him about 50 years ago and didn’t. It’s one of the great regrets of my life!!!
Watching Rubinstein in the Scriabin demonstrates what wonderful key control he had. The range of dynamics he achieves with just the L.H. is remarkable.
The 60s-70s aged Rubinstein is the deepest pianist I have ever listened. And, IMO, his Chopin is in a different, higher category to anything.
Superb!!! Arthur Rubinstein genial tehnica impecabila, nuantarea desavarsita !
Non?
Merci Arthur . Très respectueusement.
What I love about Rubinstein is the self-effacing manner, his playing of music without the hyperdrama of most contemporary pianists, not to mention the trait of technique over emotion.
My hero, idol… genius..brilliant, no nonsense approach to playing the big black box… the black beast…!
One of my faviurite painists of al.... wait.. one of my favourite musicians of all time
What a fantastic live recording! Thank you, Erwin!
Pianopera w całym tego słowa znaczeniu.!! Fenomen!!!!!👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏 Geniusz niezastąpiony 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Fascinating! Beautiful recording. Thank you for sharing this treasure.
Two people I wanted to live forever, Arthur Rubinstein and Leonard Bernstein. I still miss both of them. (I didn't know them personally, just speaking as a devoted fan.)
And Bach and Brassens. Cziffra also
Of all the piano recitals I have heard, my greatest thrill was him playing Chopin's Ocean Etude for an encore. He was into it just as his butt hit the bench
Rubinstein never fails to enchant. ❤️ Wonderful Scriabin.
Saw him twice. Age 4 which i hardly remember, but my parents told me I was fascinated standing at the balcony rail. The other in 1975 at DAR hall having licked into overflow seating on stage. His face was blocked by the piano lid, but I still enjoyed it thoroughly, including those moments when he would lift himself off he bench for that extra umph on some chords. In his early 30s he left the stage for four years to rework his technique: he'd become sloppy, and knew it. Used an out of tune upright in his barn to then return a much improved artist. Thanks for this.
On second hearing this was "BP Australia." It was when he was leaving Australia in 1964 he and the Beetles greeted each other as they were arriving at the airport. That cured me of being a classical snob.
Whenever he plays and I get to see a video of him as well as hearing him I always think of his radiant humanity-surely this what music can give at its best.
Rubinstein in his heyday - Utterly fabulous!
he was the best pianist in all world
Już prawie godzina 3 w nocy,a ja dalej słucham koncertu Artura Rubinsteina.👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Le légendaire "jeu de mains" du grand Rubinstein dans la danse du feu de Falla !
Damn,he is crazy good with the piano. Probably one of the best piano players that lived.
Yes, a lot of people consider that.
"probably" ????
the live 1964 Moscow polonaise heroique is the most phenomenal performance I ever heard. Go find it here on youtube. majestic and magnificent.
I agree that this Australian performance of Op. 53 is not one of his best. However, the rest of the recital is pretty fabulous.
he plays well .so well . ssssoooooo well
Mi ídolo inmortal. desde la infancia.

Magnificient touch.
Maravillosa interpretación.Un maestro del piano.
Gracias 😁 por compartir.
I almost spilled on my phone while listening to this, and my first thought was not "oh no, my phone" but "oh no, I'll interrupt Rubenstein".
Maravilhoso!!!
no quarter was given to that piano, what a feisty player!
At 13:40 you can swear you hear bells - how does he do that?? So masterful
Formidable interpretación,un Maestro.
Rubinstein could play Chopin better than anyone.
A true keyboard aristocrat! Somehow it's hard to imagine a petrol company nowadays sponsoring a recital by, say, Maurizio Pollini ...

OH. My. GOD!
Wow
A trained pianist can look at his posture even here how solid his sixths are in the beginning and he gained control by the 2nd minute but the electronic recording here rates as poorly as the recordings he made in Italy in the30s&40s ! He still has charm, technique and his inimitable poise and musical personality ! Many say the 1960s was not just his highest earning period but his best playing. His your of Russia proves this.
divino
Oui
Un jeu actif et sobre pas du lang lang!
danke
I’m almost his age when he recorded this. I am trying to play the Rachmaninov g minor prelude without pounding.

Best wishes.
