This concert is one of the best if all time. PLEASE listen to Dave and Tims version of #41 from the same concert (radio city), it’s absolutely stunning.
The key to understanding this song is in a few key lines. Dave wrote this song because he realized his drinking on tour was getting out of hand. The lyric “Bartender please, fill my glass for me with the wine you gave Jesus that set him free after 3 days in the ground.” is Dave wishing he could have a drink that set him free instead of confining him. Because the wine he’s been drinking sure isn’t the wine that set Jesus free. This is reenforced in the second half of the song when he changes the lyric to “Because the wine that’s been drinking me, came from vine that strung Judas from the devil’s trees roots, deep, deep in the ground.” Referencing the wine he is drinking as evil. There is one other lyric that points at this being a song about alcohol abuse. “When I was young I never thought about it but now I can’t get it out of my mind.” Basically referencing that something that never used to be an issue has now become an obsessive crutch. Anyway sorry for the long post but thought you’d love some insight. KEEP DOING MORE DAVE PLEASE!
It's a song about a man suffering from alcoholism and the struggle the alcoholic has. It's about escaping problems, not escaping alcoholism. When Dave asks for the wine that set Jesus free, he's talking about drinking himself to death and he sees death as the solution to his problem. This is also substantiated through his reflection "What's life?" meaning that he doesn't see an importance to life anymore. That's what he didn't think about as a little kid and now he wants to hide from his life, his world, and the responsibilities of being an adult. Later in the song he flips the verse from him drinking wine, to wine drinking him, meaning that he's been corrupted and has succumbed to alcoholism and it has, presumably, destroyed and/or taken over his life. At some point he used alcohol to escape his problems and that was Judas's alcohol, and now he wants alcohol that will set him free of his life, which was Jesus's alcohol. He doesn't want to be free of alcoholism, since he's literally asking for more alcohol, he just wants his life to end which is why he's asking for his brother not to forget him and his sister not to regret him when he dies.
Dave Matthews Band has many spiritual songs mentions often they are non- denominational. The wine of Christ is a metaphor. The entire song is a parabolic teaching. So you can use it to inspire your journey with alcoholism, I imagine it fits many scenarios where faith is realized.
A lot of people give Dave a bad wrap for being “frat music” but if you really dig deep into their collection (especially live albums) you see the magic the band can bring
Man, I never once thought of them in that way...that was just how they got started in VA. Frat boys who heavily imbibed on merry libations (no offense), I don't believe would be able to delve into the sobering introspective, existential and deeply personal lyricism.
@@amyelizabeth529 They, especially Dave, had to grow into that. The way he writes now is more mature compared to when he was in his 20s. One thing I miss is them jamming a whole lot, gone are the days where they would just jam out something and now there are songs on the set specifically just for that.
@@kwizzeh You have a point. But I saw him in '97, and his introspective side was on full display. Sure, as his experience grew and his perspective expanded, he expounded his insight lyrically & musically. But he was always an old soul who got stuck with a frat band label early on..
My sister was at that concert, the year after I graduated. I used to spin Under the Table and Dreaming EP at the radio station there - KWLC. It's a fantastic college if you're a musician, particularly if you're a singer. That recording is so clean! I really love the work they did on "Two Step" live.
Dmb has been giving me goosebumps for 25 years. Just saw my 60th show this year. They never disappoint. Keep doing dmb reactions and the dmb family will watch the hell out of them!!!
Thank you for playing this. I am a 60+ Gramma & my sons when they were teens in the 90's were huge fans of Dave Matthews Band...therefore, so am I. My favorite performance of all time.
Favorite band/musician of all time. They can do anything too- they can be spiritual (like here) , funky, folksy, jazzy, bluesy, powerful, meaningful, and everything in between. And they do it all incredibly well. Dive into the catalog and you won’t be disappointed.
I LOVE Dave for probably 30 years now. I’m a 56 year old lady. And this version. Oh my gosh! And. I thank Jamel for his thoughts on the song And Jamel. WOW. you’re imitation of Dave and his melodic voice so beautiful. I appreciate your reaction to this song 💕
I have met Dave and Tim both so nice and took time to talk to me. It wasn't the radio city show but none the less Dave said to me "what song would you like for me to put into the jam?" I said bartender my girlfriend and my bestfriend and his girlfriend met him randomly before the show. It was like the 6th or so song and started strumming the guitar and said this is for some good friends I just met. Played bartend. Crowd was like 25,000 but that song felt personal and just to us in that moment. Now he probably had it in the mix and whatever but he didn't have to hang out and say that. Thank You Dave.
This is what I love about reaction channels. I've heard of the Dave Matthews Band, and I've heard a couple of their popular songs, and I liked them alright. That said, I would have never sought this out, and I probably would have never listened to it had it not been on a reaction channel. This was amazing! I have a new respect for Dave Matthews' talent (and props to Tim Reynolds too!).
Every Dave Matthews or DMB concert I’ve been to is an entire experience. The way they fuse so many different sounds and styles into these beautiful flowing rhythms is like a spiritual experience.
DMB is one of my top 5 bands. Tim has been part of the Dave Matthews Band as an unofficial member for a long time. I think he is considered an official member at this point. As you just witnessed, he and Dave also do tours together with just the 2 of them. Really a talented guitarist. There are so many great DMB songs. Incredibly talented musicians throughout the entire band.
Tim is official now. I kept checking who was actually in the band because it took so long for them to make Jeff and Rashawn members. And now I keep looking to see if Buddy will be added. It's anxiety inducing.
Dave and Tim is a whole different experience than a DMB show, in some ways its better, in some ways its just different. Definitely worth exploring, as is Dave and Friends, a series of shows with Trey from Phish and some other folks.
Oh my goodness so jealous of you and all the great Dave music you have to discover!!! All the albums are great - my favorite is probably Live at Red Rocks. Enjoy :)
Lookup almost any Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds live concert and have yourself a night. or nights. and then get lost in his full band concerts too. Glad to see you finally getting to Dave, The Maker with Dave & Tim, Stay (Wasting Time), Crush, Jimi Thing, and Grace is Gone are some of my many favorites
Love every song you mentioned! Grace is Gone is such an amazing song and super special to me and my best friend! So much so, that I worked in a reference during his wedding! Proud to be a DMB fan, and hope to see you at a show down the road sometime!
There are SO many great live versions of this song. And the studio version is beautiful too. I can’t listen to it without thinking of my beautiful husband who did die before he got old. We saw DMB together about 15 times before that fateful day. ☮️💜
I feel saddened and happy for you at the same time. You lost someone so special, yet also got to spend such time as you had with a kindred soul. God bless you, he is waiting for you, getting things ready.
Just to add onto this comment by Heidi, in the intro Dave is singing 'Hallelujah' repeatedly. In the outro, where Jamel accurately says Dave is using his voice as an instrument, that is Dave pleading with a God that he ultimately does not believe in. Extremely powerful song!
28ish years for me and even more so in the last 7 years since my first concert and my son's first full on Dave experience. He was hooked and is now my concert buddy! 💜
Dave’s studio versions and live versions are completely different! Every song he sings is better, and way different, live. At his concerts we always try to guess what song is next based on the solo they’re playing next. Read up about him some more and then keep listening, he’s 100% heart
This is one of the many performances where Dave’s African heritage and travels shine through in the music. His singing in the intro and closing get heavy inspiration from African tribal music. He talks about this at one point in this same show before another song.
Love Dave Matthews Band was just at the MSG show on 11/12/21. Great video by the way!! Please do more reactions to their music. I'm a late fan but I've spent the last 9 years catching up on all the beauty I missed.
Anything from their Central Park live album is highly recommended. I travelled from Scotland to Chicago to see the full band play and it was the greatest gig experience ever.
When did you go to Chicago, Brian? Four of us went from Aberdeen to Chicago to see DMB, but it must have been about 10 years ago. Great experience.....!
Brian Gillan 2011 for us. Where are you based in Scotland? It's a shame we don't see more of them over here. We are off to Mexico to see Dave and Tim in February, should be pretty special.
your reaction made me tear up. this is one of THE most iconic Dave performances, and seeing someone connect with it so deeply in the same way that I do, made me appreciate the song and his legendary delivery even more. your comment "I felt like I'm over here listening with my chair was in the sky". 😭
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. My wife lost her big brother to cancer when she was just a teenager. She was just 16 and he was barely 21. And she has a little brother that is 10 years younger than her. I still tear up nearly every time I hear this song. She’s 45 now but wow. It’s like Dave was speaking to her family. What a beautiful song.
I have seen Dave and Tim in concert many times. Always an awesome. I can be having the worst soul sucking day and Dave music 🎶 makes me feel so much better. I suggest Lie in Our Graces live at CMAC Canandaigua NY ...it was a magical moment in an amazing show.
There are no words to describe the feelings at his shows! So many people,so much LoVE! It really is a religious experience. I wish I was able to go to so many more shows🙌🏼✌🏼🐷🐜🐜
No matter how many times I hear this I get a bit choked up. I'm not a very emotional man. But I have to say I had tears in my eyes. Very powerful and spiritual. Thank you Lord for this one again.
THIS IS WHY I BEEN LISTENING TO DMB for 20+ years - Always have a dynamic intro and eases into the singing. HE is a MASTER OF HIS CRAFT - LOVE DMB!!!!!!!
You'll never forget the first time you hear Bartender Live at Radio City. Cop the Blu-Ray DVD and watch it on a widescreen/High Def Speakers and buckle up for the next 3 hours.
Awesome. What's even more amazing to me is that all that music is coming from only two guitars.. Just goes to show what someone with talent can do with music. Love your videos man.
FIRST TIME HEARING "DAVE MATTHEWS BAND" WAS OVER 2O YEARS AGO ON THE ALBUM FROM "🎶CARLOS SANTANA ~ SUPERNATURAL🎶" THE SECOND SONG ON THAT RECORD "LO💚E OF MY LIFE" I WAS HOOKED TO THE SOUND ESPECIALLY " CARTER BEAUFORD" THAT AMAZING DRUMMER HAS A STYLE & TECHNIQUE ALMOST MAKING HIM SOUND LIKE HE'S 2 EVEN 3 DRUMMERS AT ONE TIME GREAT CHOICE AMAZING REACTION THANKS JAMEL_AKA_JAMAL ✌🏼& LO💚E MY BROTHER
Been a Dave fan since about 1997..been to over 50 shows. This is one of my top 10 recordings ever by Him. The sound is just amazing. Its not a song, its an experience
DMB is a religious experience, the band, is absolutely incredible. Dave and Tim, are IMO on another level entirely. A must see live act. You'll never see a better live performance.
Oh my goodness.... If you want people to be amazed by Dave... bring the band in! I can't believe how many comments want more Dave and Tim acoustic songs. It's amazing no doubt and I could still listen to it all day myself but... The best of Dave is hearing the way all the instruments complement and play off of each other. You can listen to one song hundreds of times and still hear different, new things and nuances in the way all the musicians play together. Amazing reaction as always my man, but we need to JAM! React to a full band Bartender live performance and compare the two now!!!
Welcome to the wonderful rabbit hole called "Dave Matthews Band". This song is everything. One I would love to sit with a group of people just discussing the interpretation of the lyrics. Dave Matthews seriously could have been a poet if the whole music thing didn't work out. The lyrics in 90% of their songs are deep and what lured me in. Powerful stuff.
As a long time Dave Matthews fan, watching your reaction to Bartender at Radio City Music Hall of all the versions out there, was just perfect! I must have listened to this version at least 50 times over the years and the goosebumps always come rushing back! Keep up the great work 👍🏼
Seeing these 2 live in Houston a few years ago was an incredible experience. This video conveys it quite well. Something about Dave Matthews songs played just acoustically in an intimate setting is quite spiritual, like you were experiencing. And I was also impressed by how many songs they played. It was incredible show of endurance as well as talent. I’ve been to many shows with his full band and it’s the same way, but it’s particularly impressive when it’s just the two of them and their guitars and no way to hide mistakes, etc.
I've been a Dave Matthews fan for roughly 20-25 years, and I still get goosebumps. DMB are easily some of the best live performers of the past several decades.
It’s amazing once you start listening for it, the Bo Diddley Beat is everywhere. Those really strong rhythmic parts you were vibing to came straight from Bo Diddley. I had never been able to hear it in the studio version but if I go back now I can’t UN-hear it. Amazing.
This is the best review of any song! I have a Dave addiction, (as I sit here Dave band tee) and the reason I love this is because for 26 years I have not been able to explain how this bend makes me feel and you've just done it. It's a religious experience, the world melts away and you let Dave nourish your soul. He returns something in you that you didn't know you've lost.
When I hear this song it really hits me hard. To me, this is a song about Alcoholism. Begging the bartender for a drink…”when I was young I never thought about it, now I can’t get it out of my mind.” “The wine that’s drinking me.” Powerful stuff, and it hits home.
You HAVE TO SEE a SHOW man!!! This man/bands music is transcendent and the concerts are on a whole nother LEVEL. From the awesome music to the LOVE surrounding EVERYONE there. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
True story - my now ex- husband (a cop) and I saw DM band in Hotlanta (Atlanta) 2009. Joints were being passed around endlessly . My ex is 6”4’. I snuck behind him and took a hit off a joint passed to me. He turned around and saw me and the look on his face was haunting. Later on the way home he we talked about it. He shared that an off duty cop would NEVER try to arrest or confront any concert goers partaking in pot smoking. He said it would not end well for him. But The DM band is AMAZING!! Please check out their song “Crash” . I’ve been to a few concerts and that concerts was one of the best!! ✌🏼 Love you J!!!
Yes. God was the bartender. That was Dave and Tim Do yourself a favor and go listen to Bartender from the whole band, performed live on July 11th, 2001. The Folsom Field album. Everyone deserves to listen to that ending...
Saw my #33, 34, and 35th shows this summer. Dave live cannot be compared to the studio albums. You said it, it’s like a freaking religious experience at the shows. Always unbelievable performances! ♥️
Listening to dave since 1994. That song and that version in particular still gives me chills after hearing it a hundred times …love your reaction. Your room set up is great.
First time I heard this song was watching this reaction video-you nailed it brother, my reactions paralleled yours and that was quite a spiritual cry for help and assistance, while honoring the creator with his voice and music. Fantastic! I have never listened to much of Dave before i saw this.
I'm a huge DMB fan and have been waiting forever for you to react. I hope you go down the rabbit hole and review more Dave tunes. I just bought a hoodie, thanks for everything. Your channel helped get me through 2020 and I'll always be a supporter of you.

And she has a little brother that is 10 years younger than her. I still tear up nearly every time I hear this song. She’s 45 now but wow. It’s like Dave was speaking to her family. What a beautiful song.
Incredible emotive story telling. Goosebumps and emotion throughout.....
This is one of my favorite Dave Matthews songs. This is from his Busted Stuff album, which just might be my favorite album of his.
You mean The Lillywhite Sessions? Yeah, check that one out instead.
Y.E.S. 💯
@@IamWishing yeah the song is EARLY Dave, but I love how it evolves every time it comes back around
Yes! You got it! Dave & Tim are magical together for sure!! Dave & Tim take you on a journey and it’s just so beautiful!
I have seen Dave and Tim in concert many times. Always an awesome. I can be having the worst soul sucking day and Dave music 🎶 makes me feel so much better. I suggest Lie in Our Graces live at CMAC Canandaigua NY ...it was a magical moment in an amazing show.
A Dave Matthews concert is definitely on my bucket list! Thanks for this reaction!
The Maker from Radio city. You’ll love it.
Awesome. What's even more amazing to me is that all that music is coming from only two guitars.. Just goes to show what someone with talent can do with music. Love your videos man.
Dave Matthews doesn’t get enough credit imho. Great reaction, could tell you were transported.
I agree.
DMB is a religious experience, the band, is absolutely incredible. Dave and Tim, are IMO on another level entirely. A must see live act. You'll never see a better live performance.
THANKS SO MUCH😊❤️❤️❤️ unbelievable performance!!!!!
Man there are so many great DMB songs. Can’t go wrong with Ants Marching, Warehouse, Two Step or Stay (wasting time)
Those are the best full band live songs.
And Crash, too.
So many great songs.
Warehouse is one of my favs forever
That's what Dave is all about. Hugs from Brazil.
That whole performance is absolute Gold.
Goosebumps. Just pure Goosebumps. Phenominal.
As a long time Dave Matthews fan, watching your reaction to Bartender at Radio City Music Hall of all the versions out there, was just perfect! I must have listened to this version at least 50 times over the years and the goosebumps always come rushing back! Keep up the great work 👍🏼
This is such a fantastic show all the way through! Tim Reynolds is a masterful guitarist.
Riveting performance. Thanks!
Incredible singer songwriter.
Glad you discovered Tim and Dave. I'd forgotten how good they soundrd with three instruments.
Amazing.
Great live. Saw them play several times. So fun and uplifting .
I relate to this reaction on a deep level.
First time I heard that rendition, the intro lifted me up. Pure joy.
All love.
THIS IS ONE COOL DUDE!!! LOVE WATCHIMG HIS LIVE PERFORMANCES!!
Ive seen Dave matthews band live in concert twice in a role now they are truly incredible and one of my favorite bands!!
When I hear this song it really hits me hard. To me, this is a song about Alcoholism. Begging the bartender for a drink…”when I was young I never thought about it, now I can’t get it out of my mind.” “The wine that’s drinking me.” Powerful stuff, and it hits home.
Chair in the sky. Check out #41 from live at Luther college
I bought this on DVD when it came out, still my favorite of his concerts, Tim was just amazing.
I know both of them and my band in the '90 did many gigs with them. Dave used to tend bar at a place in Charlottesville, VA called Miller's
You HAVE TO SEE a SHOW man!!! This man/bands music is transcendent and the concerts are on a whole nother LEVEL. From the awesome music to the LOVE surrounding EVERYONE there. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
I LOVE watching you listen to this for the first time.
Everything that man does is magical.
I've never been a HUGE DMB fan, but Dave and Tim is some of my favorite stuff ever. Absolutely amazing
Saw them in Norfolk in 94…. Will never forget the show, amazing!
Yes. God was the bartender.
That was Dave and Tim
Do yourself a favor and go listen to Bartender from the whole band, performed live on July 11th, 2001. The Folsom Field album.
Everyone deserves to listen to that ending...
Love me some Dave!
What a performance, Dave is one of the greatest songwriters on the planet
Saw my #33, 34, and 35th shows this summer. Dave live cannot be compared to the studio albums. You said it, it’s like a freaking religious experience at the shows. Always unbelievable performances! ♥️
Listening to dave since 1994. That song and that version in particular still gives me chills after hearing it a hundred times …love your reaction. Your room set up is great.
Yes, Finally some DMB. Please do Jimi Thing - Live from Central Park. Should do this one with your brothers.
You cracked open the DM sit back and let your mind an body go for the ride. Warehouse, crash into me, lover lay down, satellite ♥️
First time I heard this song was watching this reaction video-you nailed it brother, my reactions paralleled yours and that was quite a spiritual cry for help and assistance, while honoring the creator with his voice and music. Fantastic! I have never listened to much of Dave before i saw this.
Such an incredibly impactful band. Keep going down the rabbit hole.
Dave’s voice is a spiritual experience. It hits you in your soul. Beautiful
These guys are truly a spiritual gift...always.
Excellent choice! I definitely got the gossebumps first time I heard this performance. I would've kicked my shoes off as well. Epic 👌💜👌

I'm a huge DMB fan and have been waiting forever for you to react. I hope you go down the rabbit hole and review more Dave tunes. I just bought a hoodie, thanks for everything. Your channel helped get me through 2020 and I'll always be a supporter of you.
Uh oh my friend , u messed up now .... Dave will be in your ear forever now = ) Im being a good human ..spread it
So much talent on that stage!! I love Dave and Tim together!
It's great to have another Dave Matthews convert. Welcome to the family. God bless...
I’ve been to multiple Dave concerts, his fans are as die hard and loud as they come.
