I have always loved that despite chad Smith's skills, he doesn't overwhelm the music. There's no absurd fills or rolls. He fits instead of trying to compete with the guitar and lyrics.
The best part of this video is the moment where Chad does nothing but sit and feel the guitar intro. Not a sound or movement. That's why he's the best drummer for this band, because he knows when to listen rather than play
Yeah, that was so deep.. Just look at him! It must have reminded him of something from the early days of RHCP -who knows? It almost made me cry when he took it in..
He really makes RHCP songs his very own. Like I try to imagine how other people would play this song and making it awkward. Chad really fit all the beats and fills right in the pocket to add the depth and flavor to this song we all love so much
Yeah, that was so deep.. Just look at him! It must have reminded him of something from the early days of RHCP -who knows? It almost made me cry when he took it in..
noticed that too. his demeanor slighly changed on that first bar. i dunno what came to mind, specially since he probably played that song hundreds of times in the last decade
Chad is obviously goated, but can we take a second to appreciate that, in this day and age, no one would dare to record vocals as raw as these and keep them. Call me crazy, but it just sounded so fresh and honest to me right now, love it
I think it‘s key to the Chili‘s success. Kiedis is not a proper singer - some may say he‘s a terrible singer but he has that SOMETHING in hid delivery that connects - and with ‚Under the bridge‘ that pretty much made them superstars. There are two Hendrix outtakes from the ‚Blood Sugar‘ album and Kiedis totally nails Jimi‘s vocals where most ‚proper‘ singers just sound off and forced when trying to cover Hendrix.
Wow, that was so deep.. Just look at him! It must have reminded him of something from the early days of RHCP -who knows? It almost made me cry when he took it in.. Chad Smith, you're a Master on the drums.
Let this be a lesson to starting drummers...you can write a song 30+ years ago, perform it thousands of times, and still make little mistakes...but if you're having fun and loving your craft, people won't notice. So go easy on yourself. Chad will always be a legend ❤️
Also just be good enough that you continue on, if you stop then it’s obvious you made a mistake. The show must go on and all that. We are human, no one’s perfect, even drummers. Be so good that you can improv on your own music.
This makes me appreciate how much the drums and bass accent the vocals in the first half of the song. Also, Chad playing a backbeat somehow sounds better than 90% of drummers playing a backbeat.
@tranullius6087 His dynamics, like the way he hits the snare and the way he moves between the flat and the bell of the ride, are excellent too, and contribute to the overall pulse and feel of the groove.
Their discogrophy truly is one for the ages. Can't Stop, Snow(Hey, Oh), Under The Bridge, Californication, Otherside, By the Way, Give It Away, Black Summer, Around the World, Rain dance Maggie, I mean the list goes friggin on and on!
Love how he slowly gets locked in. Seeing a natural musician at work doing their part to serve the song is like watching a lit candle burning. Doing what its supposed to do.
As someone who’s not a musician I appreciate his restraint and waiting till almost 3/4ths of the song is gone before he adds his full drums and it still works so well
To some of the comments out there: I'm thinking he hasn't heard the original version in years. Not like, We're all used to. Those drum parts are really burnt in our minds, wether we can play them, or, not. Especially after hearing them, tons of times, since 1991.
I'm thinking every time he gets on the stage he's playing however he feels like playing, knowing it's his job to keep time, and provide his flair while not getting in the way of others. He's a great drummer and this stuff just flows out of him and I can see that whenever he performs. So the real question is has he ever played it like he did when recording the song since then? I certainly don't think he tries to or even cares to try. I think he wants to maintain the feel of the original recording and that's it, so I think the best way to say it, maintain the feel, but also play how you feel at the moment. To me that's how it seems he plays and it's always great because he's a great drummer with natural feel.
