It’s great to watch a film with Jim Stewart talking about what he did so well. A WW2 Lt Col in the airforce. He flew 20 missions and rose to Brigadier General in USAF reserve.
A lover of aviation and decent man.

The Cessna 310, N6775X, that Jimmy Steward flew to the show, is today undergoing restoration as a static display at the James Stewart/Indiana County Airport, Indiana, Pennsylvania. It will be on a stand in front of the airport administration building. The project was taken on the by the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 993.

I enjoyed this show from late 1965. Jimmy Stewart was a joy to listen to in narrations. Arthur Godfrey was one of my favorites. Both men did well in their "hobby" of flying.
The music is, like I've said in past similar documentaries...a classic piece of the mellow style of decades ago. I love it.

Tom Foster The Toronado and the hairdo agree with 1965, but interestingly, the parachutist at the opening had a 48 star flag.

Tom Foster--Jimmy was not a "hobby" pilot. Check out his military record and his rank at retirement.

James Stewart is one of my favorite actors even without aviation. But he was much more than just an actor and a B-52 qualified SAC Commander, he believed in "just do it"!

What a wonderful video of the past. Our people and current culture of today sure could use a strong dose of the culture and beliefs and love of country and God from this wonderful time in history. Oh how our country needs a revival, and turn back to God for leadership and direction. Oh how we continue to fail our creator, and what a price the children of the future will pay for our selfish doings!!!!!

if Miss Patsy Cline, who guested on the Godfrey show, had Arthur Godfrey as her pilot she would have gotten home safe .

LOL that man never acted a day in his life! He was always Jimmy, what a character! Watching him flying solo, I couldn't help but think of him piloting those Bombers in WW2. More than 20 missions which was really pushing your luck as a pilot if your goal was to make it home alive. The worlds a better place for him having been in it. BTW as to Jimmy Stewart being Jimmy Stewart in the movies, he never turned in a bad performance.

Cool stuff, got to love Jimmy Stewart, great special, I didn't know he flew, but it makes sense, he's part of that 'past' world that existed in Indiana, PA., ya know, growing up in the 30's probably, kind of know it, second hand through my parents who grew up almost in the same place. "Can't get there from here", I suppose farmers had planes, plenty of space to take off, fly into the city, or somewhere, my dad talked about a guy who had a plane and took him up as a kid. I took a ride in a Cessna or Piper when I was real young, just around the counties of Ohio. Lots of aviation enthusiasts around I suppose, the magic of flight . Out of the whole show it looked like the gliders were the safest bet. Ballon piloting, ok but at the mercy of the wind completely. Somewhere around 9:45 in he says those acrobatic planes and stunts r for kids, he's right, good wisdom, a much older guy was bringing a prototype 1932 bi wing, think it was, to a place called Gemco field North Lima Ohio back in the 90's sometime, on his way to a museum in Tennessee, don't think he could quite get a handle on the controls and flipped it landing, broke his neck, my friend was taking pictures of the landing, got the whole thing, a shame, good wisdom Jimmy has there.

You've got to have complete faith in your equipment while sky diving. I loved how the British Aero club tonight us how everything worked and to maintain and pack our own chutes. Made you feel like you're ready for any possible file-up. The Brits are very good instructors!

What an incredible manJimmy Stewart was. He received his civilian pilot's license in 1935, and in 1938 he obtained his commercial pilot's license. He always humble about his WW2 service. In March 1941 at the age of 32, he reported for duty as a private and was assigned to the Army Air Corps at Moffet Field in California. to comply with the regulations of the Air Corp proficiency board, Stewart required an additional 100 flying hours and bought them at a nearby airfield at his own expense. He then took and passed a very stiff proficiency board examination. In January 1942, Stewart was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He was then sent to Mather Field in California as a four engine instructor, which included both the B-17 and the B-24 heavy bombers. Much to Stewart's dismay, he stayed stateside for almost 2 years working as flight instructor, until his commanding officers yielded to his request to be sent overseas. In 1943 he was a captain and the operations officer for the 703rd bomb squadron, 445th bombardment group of the 8th Army Air Force in
Tibenham, England. In March of 1944 he was transferred to 453rd bombardment group at Old Buckenham, England, flying as lead pilot in B-24 Liberators, flying 20 combat missions as command pilot deep into Germany. His missions included bombing raids to Berlin, Brunswick, Bremen, Frankfurt and Schweinfurt. Stewart was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, the air medal with three oak leaf clusters and the French Croix de
Guerre with palm. By the war's end, Stewart had risen to the rank of Colonel. After WW2 ended, he remained with the U.S
Air Force Reserves and was eventually promoted to Brigadier General in 1959. He retired from the Air Force in 1968.

I was there, never knew this video was made, my most memorable event was I was exiting the side door of a hanger and as I pulled the door in Jimmy Stewart was on the other end of the knob! he in his classic stammering way apologized and really for no reason other then just being the true gentleman he was, at the time I was just a 17 year kid/pilot and to this day I wish I would have had the guts to stop, introduce myself and tell him I was one of his greatest admirers which by the way I still am, when he retired so went the true Aviation movie making, nowadays the what I call "Movie-Tunes" computer generated stuff is unwatchable backed up by absolutely no technical advisors like they once had

The #39 racer "Deerfly" seen at 8:24 and 16:12 is the aircraft that took Bill Stead's life, for whom the Reno Stead airport is named, the only venue for unlimited air racing.
The "Stearman" at 20:12 is actually a Waco UPF-7. The "Stearman" at 35:15 is actually a Travel Air 4000.
A Wing Derringer can be seen at 30:30, one of 12 built.
The parachutes starting at 25:00 all seem to be Mark 1 Para Commanders.

"The "Stearman" at 35:15 is actually a Travel Air 4000." A "Wichita Fokker"? I also thought it was curious that in 1965 the skydivers that opened the show were carrying a 48 star flag.

The airplane @ 20.07 is not a Stearman. It appears to be a Waco UPF. I've flown in Stearmans. My father ran a crop dusting operation over 50 years ago with Stearmans.

22:17 , probably the same plane designed back in the 1960's .
Other than few new GA designs like the Cirrus, no revolutionary designs were made since this video was recorded.

What is the actual REAL date this video was created? rather then the date it was published. I doubt anyone really much cares about the date it was published. Example the Black Sea scrolls were published within the past 100 years but were created THOUSANDS of years ago. this video wasn’t just made in the past few days, weeks or months! so show the date it was MADE.

I can't believe he was flying with that scary old man hat on. There's nothing more anti than those Abraham Lincoln hats. It's like watching astronauts in space wearing a Bola hat while flying to the moon! Does anybody else see that!? For me, hats date a person and don't belong in certain situations they just look silly, contrived and out of place
