hey man! only trick used was throwing cat food on the surface to get the kitty up there haha. it all has to do with the “shadow” being cast by the cylinder. the shadow is fake. it’s printed on the checkerboard. so you mind thinks it’s real and automatically adjusts the shade of the square
@@brusspup But how did you mange to prevent the real shadow of the cylinder from interfering with the fake shadow? My mind is seriously broken trying to think about the lighting setup...
Dude, thanks for being (one of) the only comment(s) here addressing how incredible it is to reproduce this illusion in real life. Everybody else either has no idea how amazing this setup is, or they're too distracted by the channel's annual upload to notice lol
@@MrRoboticBrain I think the light in the back left is very diffuse, so doesnt cast much shadow. Another light in the front right casts the main light over the scene (you can see the shadow on the other non-grid side of the cylinder). The shadow is just a printed illusion.
Man. This channel, every other year, takes me back to my 16 year old self subscribing to it back in like 2007. One of the first channels I ever subscribed to. Always warms my heart to see another video posted on it. Thank you. Wish you all a Merry Christmas and happy new year
I legit just remembered this channel & wanted to watch some of your old videos, but then I realized you just uploaded 15 minutes ago after 2 years of silence. Absolutely incredible 👏👏
Wait, what? At first, I thought it was the usual shading illusion, but then when the "black" tile was moved onto a "white" tile, I realized it was a different illusion altogether: how come the tile does not become darker when going into the shade? The illusion is not caused by the actual lighting (if I understand correctly)! It broke my mind for a while, well played! I hope viewers will take the time to appreciate it.
The illusion is cased by the fake lighting: Both the big light you can see black cylinder and the shadow the black cylinder cast on the checkerboard are a lie. Look at the shadows of everything else: The scene is actually lighted from the front. If the scene was actually lit as is it pretends to be, your brain would be right: The square would have to darken it's true ("unlit") color in order to keep the same apparent brightness when it move to a more lit area of the scene.
The light on the back-left is just for show, there's a big light on the front-right, which is shown in the first shot of the video. You can also see the effect of that in the shadow of the cat. The tiles are just colored in such a way to mimic the on-paper illusion, and are not "colored" due to a shadow being casted on them.
Damn it's been over 10 years now when I started following your content, back then with the old original RUclips account. And in the meantime I forgot and today I randomly remembered your channel and am happy to be back, a throwback to the good and seemingly easier days. :)
welcome back brusspup! But what are the squares "real" colours then, without any shadow? The original illusion is a lightgray square in shadow has same shade as a darkgray in light, but they are different for real. But this is: they are same for real, but look different. What's up?
Damn is it 2015 again???? Love when theres a new Brusspup video!

It's so so so so long time to see you. So happy to see notification from your channel. Nothing but a happy smile and Merry Christmas you. I was your subcriber about 7-8 years ago, now I'm still and I always wait for your new videos.
The comments are ragging on you for low quantity output. Are you still alive? Are these reruns ? Do you remember us, your faithful subscribers ? ( south Florida )
Wow, I never thought I’d see this illusion in real life! Very clever how you did it (or at least how I assume you must have done it…?) I coded a demonstration of this in Scratch in middle school, many people didn’t even believe it, they were convinced the color was changing 😂 probable spoilers below . . . . I assume the “light” isn’t bright enough to actually cast much of a shadow in the area lit by the light behind the camera, so all the pages on the edge of the “shadow” are just printed with the necessary colors? But the establishing shots really help sell the illusion, and even with the cat sitting there it’s not that obvious! …but wait, the visible light is casting enough light to shine on the floor and reflect in a very realistic way… so am I wrong? 🤔
How Amazing ! I want to know if you can see the same result at the scene. And is it a result of a very accurate calculation of the colour difference, i.e. brightness ? Thank you, lovely to see your video!
Thanks for the effort and the contribution.... It's the refraction that makes it appear that way..... it's like many surfaces that get a "different" color when the light falls on them differently.... Apparent but not matarial
I swear this illusion trips me up everytime, even though I can clearly believe they are the same shade, what eyes see makes you believe it's some magic.
I remember watching the original video all those years ago! There’s still something that’s unanswered even in this video, could you remove the cylinder?
The best channels are the ones who leave a lasting impact. One so great, people still remember you and watch a 1 minute 32 second video after a 2 year gap like it was yesterday. JonTron is another good example of this. This channel is legendary!
"Color" is not something that can be found objectively; is the subjective experience that the mind gives to the visual field, which is also not something that can be found objectively. We could argue that it is the result of certain frequencies of light, but there is no quality of "blue" or "gray", etc, inherent in any particular frequency. In other words, it is purely experiential, and so from this "illusion" we could say that the colors are the same when experienced as the same, and different when experienced as different. It just depends on what we mean when we say "the same" or "different." The experiences are certainly different, and ultimately all we know is whatever is in the field of experiencing, even if we try to reduce experience to some mechanical process, for example. Having said that, I love this "illusion" 😅
You're right, but for the purposes of this illusion, the grays are the same. They are both reproducibly the same, if one of the grays suddenly transitioned to another, nothing would change. So they are the same, even though they appear different
This channel is like that old happy memory you remember when everything is bad but you need a smile. Merry Christmas brusspup and happy new year!
such a nice comment. thank you!

I suppose it's something to do with the glossy paper and how it appears lighter or darker depending on the illumination angle
I hope we get the answer cause my mind is totally blown
The illusion is cased by the fake lighting: Both the big light you can see black cylinder and the shadow the black cylinder cast on the checkerboard are a lie. Look at the shadows of everything else: The scene is actually lighted from the front.

@@progreon That was my conclusion too, there is no real shadow, only fake shadow by coloring the tiles.
