I'm thinking of using this on some leather armor I'm making. By far the best vinegaroon tutorial I've found so far!
I use this as a wood stain and it’s fantastic! Every wood type stains differently. Pine looks weathered while something dark like walnut goes a dark ebony. Very cool to see it works on leather too!
I am making some of thus Vinagaroon. I have been soaking a steel wool pad in vinegar I bought at Walmart. It is a 5 % acidic vinegar. The steel wool has been soaking for four days, but other than the steel wool blackening, there has been no change to the color of the vinegar.
BUT, I tested the solution in a scrap piece of leather, and it quickly turned it very black!
The solution is still clear!
I used this exact method 3 or 4 years ago on a thick veg tanned knife sheath, and its still fantastic looking. It ages and patinas beautifully, a rich velvety blue-black. the little marks and scars from regular use only make the finish look even better
Did it bleed out onto your clothes from water or sweat ?
Thanks for this short and comprehensive guide.
Its also the historimethod of blackening leather in the high middle ages.
I'll use this technique to dye my leather sword scabbard.
Exactly what I needed to dye a replacement leather handle on a vintage wood and cloth suitcase. Thank you!!!!
Today my research over. Thankyou so much.
This is awesome! I love these how-to videos!
Thanks! We'll keep them coming.
Very informative. Thank you!
Ok, so how do you pre-treat the leather with alcohol? Seems like we skipped that part. And does apple cider vinegar effect the final color vs white vinegar?
Thank you Cpt for putting this tip on here I'm also a re-enactor and was with the 19th TN Co. A Sharps I have a tip to pass on I use Petroleum jelly in replacement of saddle soup I've found it works just as good and a lot cheaper.
copper Acetate is a blue-green, that might make an interesting dye. Thanks for the video.
When doing the smell test, how does it have “no smell and all the vinegar is gone, then your iron dye is perfect?” Trying to understand that.
Yyaahh :) one step closer to dying hides! Thank you
Worked great for me. Super dark finish.
Very nice thank you very much this is what I love about the hobby
Could you make a green dye, in similar fashion, using copper? I am in need of a green leather dye, but have no local supply house, for such. Thanks
I have a very old jug of vinegaroon... It is probably 5-6 years old? I decided to test it.... It doesn't look right, and it dyed the test piece a very nice medium tan.... I'm going to let it dry, and see what it looks like.. I may have just found another dye substitute!! It looks like a slightly darker version on neatsfoot and sunlight....
Will it work with soap in it? I can't find plain steel wool
Hey great video! I’m planning to dye some Kangaroo leather to have a pair of boots made. Do you think the dyeing process would work the same and if so how do I prevent the grey from losing its color/becoming darker?
Thank you for taking the time to make a video. I followed your steps with success but there is an issue that being once dry it goes pale. Any thoughts?
Woodworkers pre apply a couple of coats of strongly brewed tea. Strong dark teas like Assam with lots of bitter Tannins work best. English Breakfast tea is perfect. Then apply a coat of the iron acetate. Allow to dry and fully react. Repeat if necessary. Goes a very dark rich blue Black colour.
It works, not just with oak and leather, but it will deeply brown poplar and blacken walnut.
is there a way to lighten it to a lighter gray?
Do you neutulize it with baking soda
Thank you for this great video! I'm wanting to do a leather jacket that is lined with faux fur. Does it permanently stain other materials and/or will it stain after soaking in baking soda water?
great video, thank you so much!
I wonder why sometimes the vinegaroon comes out clear and other times it takes on a rust color
Nice video
I've seen many diy that make a brown color but this is the first one that make a black color.
You mention to worm up the vinager, should i do that before or after mix with the steel?
Is there any chance that the color come off and mess up your clothes?
Thanks for the video.
Dos effect the learher ?
How about an antique finish for leather, have a recipe, thanks so much, wonderful video
Nice! Does anyone know what I need to make red dye?
will it work on chrome tanned leather?
is it possible to use this method for naples leather? thanks.
Does it still work if there is some acetone left in the steel wool after it’s been soaked?
Very useful!
Does it works only for vegetable tanned leather?
It should work on other leather if you prepare it properly. As with any product and project, I'd spot test on a sample to ensure it will give you the results you're looking for.
I have a lot of oil paints that I wonder if I can dissolve in IPA Alcohol to make paint for leather. Will it work?
Also works on Oak.
GREAT Vid!! Can you do a tutorial on how to die leather white? Or near white? Please??? THANK YOU ! .:))
Does anyone know the long-term effects of this to the leather, or have a weighed steel wool to vinegar ratio or a de-acidifying ratio for the baking soda soaking?
Seat of the pants man. Did you do the long term experiment?
hello have u tried the the above procedure but i get light brown color. what is it that am not doing right ?
How does this work on brain tan buckskin?
Nice video
nice look
Thanks for posting this. I am working on a Kibler knapsack strap system at the moment to dye the straps for federal/antebellum use. Very helpful!
Thanks. Let us know if you have any more questions.
I did this with some copper and got a blue dye of some sort.
Would the iron and vinegar stain work on brogans or cavalry boots? Would the black hold up over time?
I would say it would, as long as its treated with baking soda and warm water after then heavily oiled or it will dry out the leather like no other.
@@CompanyD2ndUSSS Is there great danger of drying out the leather? I could use other leather dye if the vinegar solution is going to ruin my boots. Either way, thank you for your series of educational videos. I serve with the 4th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. I hope our paths cross at some re-enactment.
Have you tried lightly applying or diluting to get a grey color?
I have done that. It works well.
I've tried doing this with vinegar 5% and this iron wool, too. Sat there in the closed glass for a week, but I had no change of color. What am I doing wrong?
Shouldn't be closed
Id like to see who is the best shot...
I like ACV. Light red color to wood.
Thx now my home made deathnote looks more original than the original
Great video who is on charge of the channel jw ty
The captain and I run it. Like everything in our company it's a group effort.
Company D 2nd USSS should I revamp my channel and if so what kind of video should I do
It's up to you, but your handle says a lot. I don't know of anyone gearing a living history channel towards young reenactors. It could be a heck of a niche. Out here, most of our reenactors are pretty long in the tooth. Our unit has probably has one of the youngest average ages in the Northwest. Teenage reenctors have different hurdles, questions, budgets, experience, etc. Why should young people get into reenacting?
Company D 2nd USSS ok thanks I would love to meet y'all one day I have learned a lot from y'all
"very quick" he said. Only one week xD
Imma still make it but i'm a bit worried the leather might smell a bit vinegar...
Is there a way of neutralising the smell?
Not really since it's a chemical reaction between the iron and the vinegar. Only way there can really be a "neutral" smell is when the mixture between the steel wool and vinegar is done with little to no wool left in the jar, even then there will be a smell.
LIKED the video, however I miss this historical effect of you and the Sgt in uniform.
1stMinn Sharpshooters I will keep that in mind. I plan on doing a few videos on captaincy and officer stuff and will be sure to do that in uniform.
Sounds good pards - chat with you later.
How would you re - dye a black leather coat?
Check out Bedo's leatherworks on RUclips. He's covered it a few times.
@@CompanyD2ndUSSS thanks,I will.can I use regular isopropyl alcohol to clean the item I want to dye?
Make sure you really neutralise the solution after, I made that mistake exactly once.
What is the shelf life of the finished solution?
Hamm 603 currently testing that out. Made this batch in late October and still have some left over. I'll be testing it here in a few days and see if it still gets the results I want. I will report back soon and let you know
effect on leather is permanent?
Andrés Romero yes it is
He a whole snack 😋
What if I wanted it Brown
Would definitely not use this method and would use oils like neatsfoot rubbed into the leather.
@@CompanyD2ndUSSS thanks
Has anyone used this on a white cat...?
I didnt know Mike Patton was into leather dye
Looks like u used it on your hair
That's more work than buying a bottle of black pro dye.
May be quicker but some guys like to go the "old school" route for the correct style of dying.
In your intro...You forgot to mention nasty when you said ''A very quick, easy and a very inexpensive way''...Eww Vinegar...
Acid is not good for leather
Definitely not. Luckily its neutralized by the baking soda water treatment after. They used quite a few unique ways to dye leather then and always had some form of an acid to them. One recipe if I recall correctly called for dog feces in it!
Please Hindi speak
