There is a reason Marvel uses Shields as one of their symbols. A shield is a defensive weapon, although it can be used for offense. A shield is for protection. So by using a shield as one of their symbols Marvel heroes stand for protecting the innocent! This resonates to people that the goal of the heroes is first to protect, then to strike. It's a very powerful message.
