I recently went along to an exhibition put on by a local historical group. They had a number of musical programmes in their tea room relating to the man who was behind raising money for the founding of Derby Hospital. Looking through them it transpired that Gracie gave her services free on several occasions to help with raising the money to build the Hospital. What a lovely lady she was. The said building has since been replaced and the original structure is making way for new housing
My grandma Alice Shepherd loved Gracie. I still think about her often.
at about 22:00 a friend or relation says she had a sad life, ''she had everything but really she had nothing''. Not really true. If you can create music, and especially if you can sing like that you will know such joy as ordinary folk never know. I'm a singer nowhere near as good as Gracie, and i know this joy firsthand....and how much it can compensate for other things.
and that last rendition of Sally, when she was near the end of her stage life was still superb! glad i have discovered her massive talent, though i was only a girl when she died. Bless you Gracie.
Very god
