At the end of the day the best chowder, lobster, or cannoli probably isn’t in Boston. I say this as someone who lives in Boston but tbh all the good food is in Maine now for some reason. Someone will have to explain that to me.
Emily’s look on her face when she had her first bite at Sail Loft sent me 🤣 Boston was already on my bucket list (as a Brit) but this makes me wanna go even more!
I totally dug this video. In particular, I love that even the thinnest of these chowders was pretty dense. There’s been a rumor being spread here in Brooklyn that a proper chowder is actually quite milky and thin. I’ve had such chowders, and I can see the appeal on a cerebral level, but I don’t want chowder to stimulate me on an intellectual level; I want it to warm me on a primal level. To give some insight into my seminal chowder experiences, in the mid-‘80s, my mother was managing a restaurant/cabaret on Manhattan’s Restaurant Row called “Silver Lining”. Quite by accident, someone tasted the chef’s clam chowder fresh out of the fridge, and it was delightful. It was a thick, cold, pudding-like substance that went on the menu as “Iceberg Chowder”. It was beautiful. As it so happens, chef also cooked the first “Buffalo Wings” I’d ever tasted. Clearly, she had no idea how that ubiquitous snacks were produced, because her version was so far superior to any other that I’ve ever had.

Im a highschooler in South Korea. Last October our school freshmen and me went to USA and went to Quincy market. I ordered a clam chowder and a robster roll but clam chowder came up without bread. It was in a plastic container... Maybe I should have said clam chowder with bread. What is worse, there were no empty seats and it was raining so I have to eat standing up and there were not much time left to eat because I waited for a long time to order food. I ate them very very fast and ran to my bus but the food was good!!
I'm from Florida...but I live in Boston area now. Sorry you had a bed weather day in BeanTown. Quincy Market really does have alot of good food vendors there. I prefer Regina Pizza over in The North End though. If I'm at Quincy Market...I'm close enough to walk over and get a slice from there.
They all looked good - but I love, love dill. But, also that bread looked great for cutting thru the cream & butter. So, I agree with you both. Different chowders on different days.
Me too, I love dill! Whether it's on lox or garlicky Brooklyn deli pickles. I never thought of adding it to clam chowder! I have to go to Sail Loft on my next Boston trip. And chowder has more zing flavor with a few drops of green and original Tabasco.
My wife and I are traveling to Boston today and we both have never been. Thank you both for your very informative reviews, we can’t decide which one we want to try first, cheers 🍺!
I thought that the other chowders had a fair shake at being the best until 1. The first chef you can tell really takes pride in his craft and is willing to put in incredible amounts of work for an amazing product and 2. The second one with fennel was so thick you could stand your spoon in it. They both looked wonderful and I definitely agree with your choices.
Why is everyone on these videos so negative? I liked this video, and they described the food just fine! Made me want chowder so badly Edit: also, they’re not wasting food. As soon as the cameras go off I bet they finish it, or have some of the crew eat. They get hungry too
Boston has good clam chowder, but my all-time favorite is at the Black Pearl Pub on Bannister's Wharf in Newport, Rhode Island, which is liquid, creamy, and flavored with fresh dill. Fantastic!
Oh My...they all looked amazing...the first two the one in the bread bowl and the one with dill looked so tempting though...just for how they seemed for those reasons, different!!❤️ So thankful for these amazing food videos... I just bought Campbell's today. They were in sale. Yes they have more potatoes perhaps. I usually put a little ground peppers and sprinkle a little lemon, let the pepper and lemon and creamy clam chowder reaction happen, and mix it oh yeah I also put dash of Sriracha in mine. I'm gonna put a dash of black salt too. I tried put some pink salt and some black salt in my canned tomato soup. Turned out amazing. I had that with steamed chicken dumplings.
I'm from SF Bay Area and Boudin Bakery is known for clam chowder in their sourdough bread bowl. When I ate clam chowder in Boston near Fenway. I was blown away how the cc soup was so rich & huge chuck of clam meat. New England > San Francisco
I definitely would go to the Atlantic Fish Company after seeing this. I am a Chef also, and just the process of detail and quality that goes into their chowder convinced me to go to Boston and have this chowder.
I love hot sauce, but I've never considered putting it in clam chowder, which is strange because I wouldn't hesitate to put it on fried fish or a po boy

I like to try a trio of whole milk to canned milk to a little bit of heavy cream you don't need much of that stuff also some garlic & garlic paste to blend into the soup as well I'm not big on chewy clams but I would mince them up really well first probably fry them too First. maybe just a touch of white pepper also it turns out a lot better if you refrigerate it overnight too. I always do the garlic & bacon if it goes well in and pretty much what doesnt and they even use bacon in desserts. Also coarse sea salt and pepper dust works good in dishes I also love to put a little lemon juice and top it with croutons. Progresso makes a really good creamy clam chowder I even like to mix the can stuff in with homemade
I fell for it too. The bread bowl is for tourists. The large bread loaf distracts you from realizing you're getting a puny portion of clam chowder. Boston is famous for Parker House style bread rolls. A good Boston seafood restaurant starts you off with really good bread rolls with butter to spread before you even order your food. Did anyone else notice with each consecutive restaurant they went to, the bowls got smaller
They must have went more inland where city portions are pricier or their budget got smaller so they ordered small.
