The fact that you mention in the intro of the video that this might be a reupload when I know it is makes me wonder what NuX thought about it
Oh NUX haven't even seen it yet, I don't typically let companies see the videos ahead of release, and I wouldn't change anything on their request anyway.
The reupload was because I made a mistake when describing the technology and had to pull the video down to film a correction. That was entirely my decision and nothing to do with upsetting anyone over swan buggery.
Cool beans👍
@@ScienceofLoud I love your commitment to integrity and getting facts right AND STILL ROCKING
I don't even do music stuff let alone play guitar - but I learn a lot from your videos ! Thanks Keep it up!
“She Sells Sanctuary”, and you my friend have successfully sold a power supply! 😅
3:08 The break and eye look killed me. 😂 Thank you for your honesty and integrity!
Good on ya for showing the internals. I for one appreciate the science behind it being a tech/gearhead. All good isolated switch mode power supplies follow the same topology. The issue is filtering out the PWM switching frequency out of the secondary output coil. Once you achieve that through a snubber network of inductors, caps etc then you can get very clean stable DC voltage, and depending on the PWM chip can push very high current with little waste heat. Rarely however is each output over 500mA. Some PWM chips can do 1500mA or more per output, but the components get more numerous.
Great video as always!
ALL-TIMER intro, great job
This looks like exactly what I’ve been looking for in a power supply
It's purple, so I automatically love it. The new EBS Gunsten has to be the best PSU on the market though, it's the only one that can fully power a Quad Cortex on a pedalboard.
As a professional computer nerd, who only dabbles in electric guitar for lulz, I actually understood a surprising amount about this PSU. The similarities to motherboard VRM considerations were striking.
Zeus was pretty fowl with his promiscuities 😜 low battery starve option is kool feature.
Did you plan for that bird pun, or did you just wing it?
@@ScienceofLoud😂 twas winged quicker then two shakes of a tail feather my friend
That intro lol, such a good laugh
Dang, those inside shots are beautiful, what a nice power supply, I will have to check them out, been looking to upgrade from my voodoo pedal power 2 plus
We use something similar in our studio. Can't remember the brand or name, because the things have been hidden underneath our FX boards for years. lol
PSUs like this really make a difference, compared to a regular 9v PSU with 6x splitter.
Great video, Colin.
Really good to see inside the pedal. While I had no idea what I was looking at 😅, I'm glad that you did. It was pretty impressive. Thank you.
Bought one because of this vid. Thank you for what you do. Cheers!
I have no use for a $300 pedal supply, but i'll watch a correction video with solid science!
Cheers, Colin! Good save! I'd love to see a list of the effects you wired up to this board. Did I miss it in the pinned info?
NUX found the right man 🔥🔥🔥
Honestly FANTASTIC showcase. A to Z textbook. I’d legit dap you up lmao
*Btw is it possible to combine 2 outputs and add the polarity cable to it? Working with tube cirquits here ✌️
Did I watch this yesterday?
I had to pull that video down, amend some of the technical information that I got wrong, and reupload a more correct version.
So the middle section of this video is reshot compared to what you watched yesterday.
@@ScienceofLoud A reply from the man himself! That made my day :)
I'd like to request the university lecture, please.
Purple! Gotta love purple! Fun seeing the guts of this one too, not every day you get to look at Zeus' innards (unless you're making foie gras)
Seems like decent power supply, that being said I love my Cioks DC7 with the 8 expander is amazing!
Cool really. And yeah, can confirm about severe noise by random power supply that's not for audio gear. Also yes at first when I looked at one of these I wondered why they were so large and expensive hah. But I managed to daisy chain just few of my low power pedals with good single power supply I got from one of the pedals, just enough for all.
I watched this after your apology ... brilliant self acknowledgement of your fluff up at the 'transformers' ...
I might be sold. Smaller than my CS12, lighter, and doesn't have two mandatory 18v and one AC outputs. And all outputs are 500mA too, rather than 100mA and 250mA.
Mo powa!!!
UNLIMITED POWA!!!
What patch cables were used in the demo pedal board that was assembled during the PSU FAQ section?
Those were Hosa flat patch cables: hosatech.com/products/analog-audio/instrument-cables/guitar-patch-cables/cfp-000/
If I wanna power even more pedals, do they make an even bigger version? Or should I just stack a couple of these together?
You could certainly grab a second one of these - although as every outlet on this supplies 500mA, and most analog pedals draw far less than 100mA, it's entirely possible to daisy chain a few low draw pedals from a single outlet. That would further extend Zeus' functionality without having to purchase a whole other supply.
9:01 Is that Duran Duran? I feel like I've heard that before but I can't place where.
It's something more like this: ruclips.net/video/ZCOSPtyZAPA/видео.html
I wonder if the size of the power supply can be reduced by using an external power supply plug to give it the right voltage. Like how they reduced the size of a Micro Dark by using a dedicated power supply thats outside of the amp.
Aside from that, the PWM integration is pretty genius.
There are a lot of other power supplies on the market that reduce their size in this way - the new Walrus Audio supplies spring to mind.
They'll have a small output board which mounts to the pedalboard, and have that connected to a laptop style powerbrick which does all of the mains switch mode conversion.
However, it's a little odd to sell your power supply on its tiny size when all you've really done is put half the power supply in a different box further down the cable. Especially since those powerbricks are often off the shelf parts and half the development of the product becomes filtering out all the noise from the third party switching supply.
@@ScienceofLoud Maybe there are some benefits when it comes to heat and interference by moving the bulk of the conversion away from low-power circuits, including the power supply enclosure itself and all the other little noisemakers you have on your board.
I was expecting a side-by-side comparison with a non-isolated supply. Good video though.
Why does there need to be a switching power supply per outlet? I'm probably missing something but I think one bigger switching power supply and an isolating transformer per outlet should do. What am I missing?
transformers are working on AC! A switching power supply also has a transformer (or at least an inductor (but then it is NOT isolated)). You want an extra transformer? Isolating transformers are good for (guitar) signals, not for DC.
@@HansNederland I somehow didn't think of the fact that (most) pedals run on DC. Thanks for enlightening me. :)
So that it can be completely isolated. One transformer cant be shared by multiple outlets as it defeats the purpose of isolating each power slot. Some cheaper power supplies uses one transformer and claim it to be isolated. Well this one is truly isolated.
Yeah. I'm one of those with the funny voice. It's not quite falsetto yet, but it is higher than before I quit smoking. So you are saying that I need to drink a little more beer to balance out my voice to get it back to a more appropriate pitch? I don't know what to think about that.
NuX: "Let's name our power supply after a lightning god! Send it to that Scottish fella for review."
Scottish fella: "DEHD YOU KNOW THA' ZEUS WUS A SEX PEST?"
so, basically, NUX made the perfect pedal power supply? welp, there goes more of my money...
Mmmmmmm magic smoke...........
Deja Vu?
I THOUGHT it sounded wrong that optoisolators were the means of power isolation.... I've been spending the last day trying to find how that would work!
I' ll stick with my cioks
Duck, comments incoming. 😂
You're quickly becoming one of my favorite gear channels. I love the deep dives into the hardware you are doing more of lately. Keep it up please.
