  • Go behind the scenes of a cult ITC action drama in 'The Morning After: Remembering The Persuaders!'. Created by Robert S. Baker and first broadcast on ITV in 1971, the series starred Tony Curtis and Roger Moore as Danny Wilde and Brett Sinclair, a mismatched team of crime fighters who took on cases that the police could not.
'The Persuaders!' was the one of the the last big-budget action adventure series from Lew Grade's ITC/ATV empire and was Roger Moore's final television project before being cast as 007 in the James Bond franchise.
In this documentary, exclusive interviews with the cast and crew reveal the genesis and tumultuous production of the short-lived but extremely popular series - including run ins with the law, conflicts between actors, the difficulty of finding success in America, and early plans for a second series that never came to pass.
An international hit, 'The Persuaders!' was known under many titles, including - 'De Speelvogels' (Belgium), 'Amicalement Vôtre' (France), 'Die Zwei' (Germany), 'De Versierders' (Netherlands), Snobbar som Jobbar (Sweden) and 'Attenti a Quei Due" (Italy).
Contributors: Roger Moore, Tony Curtis, Robert S. Baker, JOhnny Goodman, Roy Ward Baker, Tony Spratling, Malcolm Christopher, Ken Baker, Brian Clemens, Peter Price, and Stuart Damon.
Produced and Directed by: Stephen La Rivière and Thomas Cock

roger recalled they had some difficulty with tony curtis when discussing the show. tony was chairman of an anti smoking lobby in the usa. lew grade and myself were partial to a havana cigar.tony gave us very long very passionate speeches about our filthy habit.even when we sneaked out to have a quiet smoke in the grounds at elstree hed pursue us and give us a stern dressing down! its my lifes passion said tony i do not permit smoking anywhere near me! he went back to the states having signed for the show. his agent then told lew that the entire production would have to be non smoking or tony wouldnt participate.he called me and said i dont know how this will work. the unions will strike! in those days the tv unions held immense power and went on strike for the slightest thing! lew left the issue and hoped for the best.in the end it resolved itself .non smoker tony was caught at heathrow with a huge amount of marijauna .cigarette papers and a bong! we never heard a word from him about no smoking after that!

The German translated version called "Die Zwei" (The Two) was a runaway cult success due to some creative dubbing.
The banter between Moore & Curtis was straying far from the original version, embraced sillyness, constant wordplay and innuendos. The self-deprecating humour was cranked up so high, they even lampooned the TV station broadcasting the episodes.
A rare example where a dubbed version surpassed an already phantastic original series.

It was a big success in Germany as "Die Zwei", "The Two", but with a little help by the special Dubbing. The german (voice)actor Rainer Brandt, who sadly recently passed away, invented a funny over the top dialog method that made TV Series and Movies during the 70s more funny in the german dubbing compared to the Original. He claimed Tony Curtis watched a few of the german episodes and wanted him to write dialog for the second series in english, which never happend.

First of all because that’s how I got to know the series but secondly, and more importantly, because the dialogs in the German version are somehow even more hilarious. Probably because German can sound a bit extra pompous at times. “Ihre Durchlaut” etc.

Having been lucky enough to be born in the 60’s I was old enough to watch this series aired at the start of the 70’s
Having watched repeats many times since I did not realise it only ran on ITV for around 6 months
I loved it for many reasons, the glamour, the locations, the cars Roger and Tony
Also just for the decade of films, TV etc
For me growing up in the 70’s entertainment was great.
I suppose a lot of it would now be cancelled, called misogynistic, and sexist and ‘we cannot upset the snowflakes
    😍😍😍😊😊😊👍 👍 👍 ❤️❤️❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿😃😃😃🙏🙏

The best thing of this documentary is the beep sound to cover a word that Curtis was uttering. Perfect case of censorhip disguised as not appropriate word. The Big Brother is still alive and kicking in UK.

I was 13 when I saw this in the US on it's first run. It was my favorite show at the time and I own the series on DVD. I think this and The Avengers got me with it's tongue and cheek!

This, to me, back in the day was the best TV series to watch. Loved every minute of it, never missed an episode.
Even back then, you could tell Roger & Tony had great chemistry on screen, and you just knew when they were off script and ad-libbing. It's just a great fun TV series, and fun to watch. Wish there had been more series to enjoy.
I have to be honest, I really preferred Roger in The Persuaders than him being James Bond. They really don't make great TV action series as good as The Persuaders was anymore, just utter woke crap, where all the boxes have to be ticked before any drama our series are made.

When I saw this as a kid, I so wanted to grow up and be like them, the fast cars, the money, the girls, the glamour etc. Unfortunately it didn't quite work out that way for me but it was fun while the dream lasted 😀

The Persuaders is now acknowledged as basically the best bad TV show ever made. It was a ridiculous premise, but it was thoroughly enjoyable, entertaining, and fun. It also has the best TV show theme music of all.

even after all these years, Curtis comes across as a jerk, and basically all british crew members interviewed here agree on that too. It is well documented that Moore and Curtis couldn't stand each other. The reason behind the gloves (if the crew is to be believed on that) is that Curtis was smoking huge amounts of Dope in his dressing room so his hands would smell from that stuff and the leather gloves would cover the smell.

@@anderslundblad4194 Marcus is correct. Curtis's bad behaviour and drug use are well documented. Robert S Baker said, "Tony could be prickly. He'd come in in the morning, black thunder, everyone kept clear of him. Then he'd come down from his dressing room half an hour later and kiss everybody after he'd smoked a couple of joints. As long as Tony was on the joints, he was pleasant. But when he wasn't, he could be very difficult. You always had to handle him with kid gloves."
