- Visit the school for more information: www.nwboatschoo... - This is a time-lapse video I created based on photos taken at 60 sec intervals for 4 months while at NWSWB. The large boat is a Cape Cod Catboat and behind it is an Edwin Monk Sunray Lake runabout.
The time-lapse was done with a Nikon 8700, a DigiSnap 2000 from Harbortronics ( www.harbortron... ), and a lot of patience.
wow... these guys work soooooo fast...
LOL
Joking aside... this is a great video.
Many times I wondered how these art pieces were made, specially centuries ago.
Well... here I got the answer
Thanks Rob
The MOST FUN of any boating building 'thing' in which I've ever been involved. This video is true and fun.
Beautiful work, I do this in miniature and the craftsmanship on display here (even in warp speed) is incredible!
Great Craftsmanship. You guys are amazing what can I say.
God Bless You Sailors! Amazing video! Best, Paul
A fine example of "Motion is Not Progress." Great Music!

lovely work *
love the music!!! great boats
would have loved to have seen the finished product. Looks like it might be nice.
this video response was inspired by your video. hope you enjoy. we certainly enjoyed yours. regards, bear family of wooden boat builders.
I have seen many boat building videos. It seems there are several techniques to build one. Most of the time the spine and ribs are built first not separately.
I wanted to see the whole thing till the finish. and the music was great.
Excellent video.
Music For A Found Harmonium/ La Partida/ Roumanian Tune/ Calgary Polka/ Leaving Brittany - Kevin Burke
Awesome song!!! :D
as fast as you guys work you could have holloed out thousands of logs for conoes ;P jkz
all kidding aside, fantastic ship, A+
I own a manufacturing company (The Bogert Group) and from my perspective, I was amazed at all the non-value added motion going on.
@JohnDamenify Yes, I attended Clover Park Voc. Tech in Tacoma back in the mid 70's. I was training to be an aircraft mechanic. I realize that building a wooden boat isn't something that is done quickly anymore than building an airplane from scratch is a fast or simple operation. I was not criticizing. I understand it and I think you would agree that there is a lot of motion that would not be called "Lean".
❤
wow beautiful (nerdy comment from a boat nerd). this centreboarder hull looks a lot like a nz mullet boat
@Bogibar I was training to be an aircraft mechanic too ! I now wat you mean , It looked like 80% of all movements were just videofilling :)
Even with time lapse...it's like watching paint dry!
@HellHound60248 There's a lot of what you would call 'pre-production' work to lay everything down correctly and they are setting themselves up for success for the first 2 minutes...
I never ff a time lapse before ;)
wow!
im an german guy and made my carpenter here.. its verry cool but my favourite job is boatbuilder..
for this job i would like to go there and learn english...!
famous!
sorry for my horrible english...
4 Months. Interesting. Too many people standing around, freeze the vid at intervals and many of the "Workers" are not working. Maybe this is a teaching thing but many are not participating in it.Why was the cam moved so far away? Looks interesting and of course uses old school technology, including the wide beam to help with stability - we assume it is a sailing vessel with a center trunk or dagger board type keel . The monk boat is also interesting. V fwd sextion to a flat stern profile - should be fast and stable.
hi just wanna ask what camera did you intall for this thanks much appreciated.
planning on building a boat almost entirely by myself... not this size but not a very small one either somehow I am quite confident I can achieve that in much less time... watching this though I must be underestimating the effort ??! Its gonna be a sandwich construction with wood and fiberglass(epoxy) with a small engine (i dont care for high speed in boating). Anyone else think this is possible not taking anything more than hull engine/steering and floors into account?
@JohnDamenify Roger that! So where did you go to school?
well done
What do you do with your wooden boat building degree? That would be great to learn such a craft, but could you actually be hired?
we never saw a finished boat? did it float? did you all sail it? did you all sell it? was it made for someone? ALLOT OF QUESTIONS NOT ANSWERED!!
Music For A Found Harmonium by Simon Jeffes
erm, does any of you guys know where i can learn this boatbuilding?
i have limited carpenterexperience and live in belgium, though i'm willing to go overseas to learn this.
cheers, lads
I'd love to know what the music is? Band/ album?
seanruss08 It is in the description above.
Why didn't you make that thing out of Live Oak?
the bald guy in the blue sweater appears to be the most knowledgeable and productive,
Whats the name of the song? I love it

👍👍👍👍
Man, you guys can really move.
quanto costa una barca uguale a quella ?? grazie per la risposta .
@JohnDamenify You might be interested in what an old aircraft mechanic has done with himself. Go out and look up "The Bogert Group".
I am in the same position, j3. Fairly accomplished woodworker no experience with boats and I've fallen in love with catboats. I want to tackle a small one to start oh..say 14 ft. I tried the yahoo discussion group but there has been no posts since 2007. Anyone know of a patient group who can tolerate my for simple and sometimes stupid questions?
I just want to learn.
so much movement for so little progress
@Bogibar , ever bin to school yourself ?
boatbuilders use chairs?
....well, I know it's wood....so it should end up floating....sometime.
so many people creating this boat,.. mini "Noah Ark"
It is not a fast thing to do if one thing is diffident on onside of the hull then the other you might not have started to build it.
ok folks were going to start this class by whittling an oak tree into a toothpick...
I've had this question for just about ever, how does one get wooden planks to bend to fit the hull?
wood is slightly flexible, and for certein kinds of boat building there is a method where it is smoked in some way to bend, but I am not that knowledgable ;)
I now need a nap.
That's like teaching ppl the most labour-intensive, ridiculous method imaginable. If you want to waste time with a group of fellow half-wits that'd be the way to do it, but if you want to make something that is reliable and will take you places, keep googling :)
whats the song?
Y U NO FINISH BOAT? Wanta SEEE
at 3:10 it´s getting interesting
Measure once, curse twice.
2:00 Finally they start fucking building. I think.
Four months and you haven't even finished the hull??? Too many cups of tea I suppose...
yall are working way too hard on building a boat. What are you doing?
Damm! Guys, you are so fast - I can´t follow you...
Yall work too fast, l'd just be in the way.
2x
11:30 and no finished product... what a waste of time!
Im watching sesame street.
If these guys were working for me, I'd sack the lot of them for poor performance. Hate videos with work not completed.
ok paul
Wood boat school? The wood boat industry died in the 50's just where are they going to get a job LOL. Hey, I like wood boats built several took a long time too, no way to sell them because the excessive work time spent. Unfortunately, although it is an art and a worthwhile endeavor no one would buy one because there is this new product called fiberglass. Wood boats not a viable buissness I crossed over to glass I know what I am talking about, no one buys a wood boat.
Walkertongdee Nobody gets rich building wooden boats anymore. This is a well known fact. People build wooden boats for the joy of working with the material and for the process. They don’t wear respirators while working, maybe a dust mask from time to time. People who can afford wooden boats buy them for the experience and the comfort. They don’t want just another piece of Tupperware to float around in. There is peace in the creaking of a wooden hull.
"...I know what I'm talking about," lmao!
there is still a demand for vinyl records, certain people like quality things that just work
Hello 👋
What a waste of my time watching that, maybe they should stick to building one boat at a time
