This run was performed on Dolphin 5.0 Lua Core with the use of Frame Advance, Savestates, TAS Input, TAS Toolkit, & Lua Scripts
Authors: Thomas (Myself)
This run beats the oldest BKT in the game, which stood for 2,841 days at the completion of this run. Due to the dolphin version that run was performed on, the ghost cannot be synced on console. Therefore I am racing Don Capri's 01:57.921 as it is the fastest run that syncs on console.
This run makes use of an advanced movement technique known as Superhopping. Outside-drifting bikes have a special property that allows them a bit of extra movement in the air when they hop. This movement is not added to the vehicle speed, labeled "IV" on screen, but instead to an uncapped portion of your speed called the "External Velocity," labeled "XV" on screen.
Normally, the External Velocity quickly disperses as soon as you land from the hop, however, by performing a specific sequence of inputs, the External Velocity is preserved even after landing on the ground, and the next Superhop adds more external velocity. By repeating this process many times, the game essentially gives you large amounts of "free speed" allowing you to easily reach and maintain a full 120KM/H.
Peach Gardens presented me an extremely unique challenge that has never happened in a TAS before now. Due to the sheer amount of input changes on such a long track, I actually reach the games internal input limit. This is a memory restriction and without actually reprogramming the games verification system, this run cannot be saved after the beginning of lap 3. Due to being unable to save and TAS Code any progress on lap 3, The only way I could finish this TAS was to use a textfile to manually write every single input for the whole of lap 3 and play it back as a script using TASToolkit. This was beyond tedious but I am relatively happy with the final result.
This run was recorded by myself and is the first time I have tried a HUD setup like this. The speedometers are unfortunately quite low quality as they are taken straight from the TAS Debug Panel created by Melg, Stebler, Kierio04, and Gaberboo, and upscaled 200% to be more visible. The audio also starts to desync around the point the Input Limit is reached and no amount of rerecording could fix it, so I can only guess the two could be linked.

You might be asking what "IV" and "XV" is.
"IV", or "Internal Velocity", is the speed of the vehicle. In most cases, the game will move the vehicle in whatever direction it's facing by this number. This is the number that is adjusted to account for off-road and acceleration.
"XV", or "External Velocity", is a measure of how much momentum we have. Whenever we go off of a ramp, for example, this is where gravity is applied.
These two velocity values are added together and capped at 120. (This is an oversimplification, you will notice that "SPEED" is usually not equal to "XV" + "IV")
Whenever a bike hops and begins turning in the air, velocity is added to XV in relation to stick inputs. If we land before 3 frames of the hop pass, we can keep that velocity and hop again instantly, which gives us supergrinding. With an outside drifting bike, we can use the sliding momentum to build up XV, which gives us superhopping.
Very useful explanation! Thank you!
Wow
I want to see another superhopping strats video.
You know, I'm not that big a fan of superhopping, but even I acknowledge the absolute insanity that is this track. Super creative usage of both superhopping and supergrinding in a single run, and I of course have to give you props for textfiling the entirety of lap 3 to deal with the input limit. You are an absolute king, my dude.
same here man, I don't like superhopping because instead of watching normal driving all I see is spazzy hops and supergrinds but I gotta appreciate the innovation and effort
Same here
couldn’t quite put my finger on what was missing from mariokart 8 until i realized it was the ability to get my bike caught in the ground and start zooming
Incredible!
Input limit reached, output limit infinite
This is amazing, love it when people push TAS to its limits
Amazing run!
WHAT
Only if it was possible in the booster course pass
If this isn't the peak of TAS, I don't know what is. Unbelievable run!
HELLO MIKEY
@@katepuddings2 HI PUDDINGS FANCY SEEING YOU HERE
@@MikeyLORR WHAT A RUN! IS MKWII EVEN A VIDEO GAME ANYMORE?!
Awesome TAS. Shocked to see a run have so many inputs that this reaches the input limit. Is clipping the tree at the end not faster?
this is one of the best IL TAS' ive ever seen... and wow what a setup to even get it to playback! incredible work. the superhop/music sync near the end of lap 1 fucking killed me, what a hot beat!
Huge kudos to you for textfiling all of lap 3. Great run.
the part at 0:39 synced so well with the music wth
MKWii 2022
Baited by the thumbnail, yet not disappointed. Good hob!
Doing this without hacking seems imposible
Input limit reached. Wouldn't that make the run invalid?
yes
@@louiswolfe5012 I explained it in the description
What is the input limit for?
@@xxlarrytfvwxx9531 presumably so ghosts didn't take up too much storage, but don't quote me on this
@@MKWiiTomas what inputs are used for super hopping
this made me laugh, who would have thought going sideways would be the meta for tas, it's actually mind-blowing how far you've progressed!! (along with the people tasing mario kart wii)
Imagine the original game developers coming back to their craft in 2022.
Absurd run. Amazing work
どうしたらこんな事が出来るんだ
Lol thumbnail nice run !
It only makes sense
It's the Shooting Star
This is insane o:
Okay cool, but that remix of Champion Iris's theme slaps
Incredible run, amazing work Thomas!
MKWII physics for the win. Just a question, what do you use to record your footage? Do you use a capture card or shadowplay or something else?
There's a feature within Dolphin called frame dumping that allows us to directly record frames without the need of a capture card and at whatever internal resolution we want.
Ayo wtf??
ヤバすぎ
Congrats blake hopefully you can make the push for 1:43 now
This is what mechanics tests arr talking about when they say assume friction is negligible
Gigachad. TASPlasma is such a noob, how can he lose over 10 seconds smh
"input limit reached"
Incredible job, Thomas!
"Input limit reached."
There’s a new ultra shortcut in this course.
what in the hell is this, TASES really reach input limits now, huh?
When the vehicle actually lives up to its name
Phoon playing MKW:

Input limit reached
Wait how do you I'ven do that , last time I was doing a TAS it could but save cuz it said too many input etc something like that, how did you bypass that
Wow, this is awesome
did not know you were into mkwii
@@Joshy- this game was my whole childhood from the ages of 8-14, I still revisit it briefly every so often
@@Storster awesome, many things are changing as well as rta strats so keep an eye out :o
The input viewer rn 😢
Siiick
Wait, what is imput limit
That's kinda fast
Nice Run!
gaming
omg it's another superhopping TAS
I would love comparison infinity bullet bill that steer to get the lowest time against tas time lol
Bonkers
やりますねぇ!
one of the most satisfying runs to watch
amazing
this is ridiculous is a good way lol
It's only possible to make this ridiculous shot of an improvement because of the Shooting Star
Im still mind blown off this fire jumping start to stay in shroom speed all lap long
Input limet reached?? what's that? some kind of a Funky virus?
Crazy
Great work Thomas
Can someone help me, I really want to superhop with tas but how do I do that?
Ok officially the 2nd best speedrunner from farn 6th congrats
great job 👏
Gotta love the thumbnail
It's only possible with the Shooting Star
Only Shooting Stars are capable of such thing
Just kidding. It's because of how high they were shooting up.
It's Just a joke
But awesome
I didn't even know there *was* an input limit wtf
Wow, I didn’t even know that there was an input limit!
0:38音ハメしてて草
Do you plan on making a version of this TAS that doesn't go over the input limit?
I really don't know what to say, what even has this game become lol. Anyway very good TAS, satisfying to watch and very speedy :D
how tf did you do that sideways thing
Awesome run! 🔥 Can superhopping be done without TAS?
awesome to see both superhops and supergrinds in heavy use here
the input limit seems very problematic for verification and optimization, i imagine many tracks will be hard capped by it. any plans by the community's coders to modify the game and lift this restriction? (i have no idea how much effort is required, the description implies the community could fix it)
great job on this tas btw thomas, very smart strats. one of my favorites across all tracks so far :)
We could possibly fix it by extending the game's limit for ghost file size.
YOU CAN SUPERHOP THE SHORTCUT?! SEEMS OP PLS NERF!
Yoo. That was an awesome. Keep up the good work Thomas.
This looked crazy to me
Wow! That's so sick, awesome!
I don't get it. If you can't record inputs without writing to a textfile, how is this a legitimate TAS? If you can just change any parameters you want, why not mod the speed while you're at it?
I don’t think you understand how using textfiles works. I’m not editting anything other than the chain of inputs used to complete the run. No parameters were altered.
@@MKWiiTomas ah okay. I don't really know how these Mario Kart Wii TASes work. I'm a bit confused on why you couldn't keep recording inputs in the TAS, after the inputs of the time trial hit it's limit. Well, I'm not really sure where the limit is enforced anyway. Is it in the time trial ghost data?
I guess the tools you guys use usually modify the ghost data directly, instead of just playing the game like a regular TAS?
@@camlan11 the input limit is the actual amount of memory allocated to save ghost inputs. This recording was done by replaying inputs from a text file using a script. It is actually more similar to input recordings in other game tases since they don’t have built-in recordings as part of the game.
amazing run thomas :)
how did u get ur game to be high quality
By using Dolphin. Dolphin has a feature called frame dumping that allows him to directly record frames without the need of a capture card and at whatever internal resolution he wants.
super cool strats
Thats Fire man
too fast🥴
Nice record.
Incredible
Great run
wtf this game sucks
nah i think its pretty awesome still.
