Another librarian here, in small-town Virginia. We are happy to help you find books on witchcraft, and I say this even as a librarian who works in the library at a Christian seminary. Librarians, by and large, are all about freedom of information for everybody and pretty radical inclusivity. Don't be afraid to talk to your librarian about your interests!

Maybe I've missed that you've said this, but in case it wasn't mentioned: a lot of the older books about Magic(k) are easily found online in pdf form. I prefer having a tangible book I might scribble some notes in and underline the important stuff, but it sure helped me get familiar with a lot of basics just reading them online.

Another idea that is not free, but it's something everyone spends money on anyway: food. Being mindful of what we take into our bodies is healthier for our bodies, advances our relationship with the world/nature/agri-ecosystems, and improves our mindset for magical work. Paying attention to whether caffeine leaves you jumpy, or meat leaves you zombified is something to consider before a ritual. Is it easier to do meditation on an empty stomach, or after breakfast. That kind of thing. And in time, people can start cooking magically, if that avenue is available to them. Just because someone can't afford to burn copal doesn't mean they couldn't add dill to their roasted potatoes. With intent.

For people who live in the same county, but not within the city limits (for example some people who live 2 miles from where I am in the city) the library card fee is $60 a year. I would expect there would be similar situations in other places in the US.

With the library option, most local libraries have an ebook option so the book would be on your device for a certain period of time and then disappear. This is super private if you don't want to talk to a librarian and/or if you are worried someone you live with will see the book.

It lures a person into buying things for the craft. Especially after watching dozens of videos and reading every book a person can get their hands on.
In most, if not all, books on the craft actually encourage or insist that a person “has to have” this and that in order to be considered a practicing Witch.
My opinion, all you need is you and what you all ready have in your home or outside.
    There’s also Audiobooks or Kindle.

And journal your journey and thoughts. It doesn’t have to be in some fancy Book of Shadows or beautiful leather bound diary, though some are quite inexpensive these days. It can be in a notebook. To put down one’s thoughts and ideas, referencing, listings of what has learned or experienced, read or studied, questioned and discovered, can go far in helping a witch on their path, be they new to the journey or old!

Having to spend my waking hours inside was so horrible. My husband would tell me to bundle up and take me on long drives, buy me tons of house plants, whatever he could think of to help me have some outdoors time.

The nature part reminds me of how the concept of “nature” is so modern. Nature and us are the same thing it’s just the definition everything and in modern times it’s the definition of everything except humans for some reason! To say any paganism is a nature based religion IMO is to say it’s not always exclusively anthropocentric. The image of nature being this magical wonderful woodland place where you go is still kinda stuck in that anthropocentric mindset of us being “other”. I think why hikes and outdoors and all that is so magical and magickal and important is because we are not isolated individual units, we are at every scientific level “all in this together” so to speak. From ecology to chemistry to physics. Nothing is isolated. So yeah paganism is a “nature” based set of religions to me, if the definition of nature is an all encompassing aspect of everything including humans and cement blocks and national parks. It’s about seeing that connection between things other than human exclusively and interacting with them. But yeah most people have this nature concept of galloping through the field on your mount with sunflowers growing behind every foot fall. (Don’t get me wrong I love that too 🤣😂, but it’s so much more than that and that idea to me)
Note: this is only my opinion and not trying to speak for paganism or all pagans etc just an observation.

    • @drawingKenaz
      @drawingKenaz  4 года назад +2

Yessss to this! My objection to “nature religion” is when “nature” is that modern construction: the thing “out there” that were supposed to “get back to.”

I live in a completely urban area and in my back yard I've got more than a few kinds of birds some of whom are spectacular, including huge hawks, that eat the rats that are too visible, mice, moles, cats, dogs, groundhogs, rabbits, skunks, squirrels, don't even want to catalogue the plants. Out near the park I've seen turkeys, pheasants, foxes , in several totally urban neighborhoods adjacent to mine I've seen deer and heard reports of cayotes. There are at least two parks near me that have little bits of old growth forest with trees older than the country both of which are surrounded by city. there is one park near me that has a modern Zoo... and if you pay real close attention you discover that the younger docents are often wearing pentagrams. I know of at least one ancient grave site in the city (although soaking up vibes there might be cultural appropriation) and one that just is completely steeped in the history of the area. Every major neighborhood in the area has some sort of creek or stream and the whole city is built adjacent to lake and river... and you are right.. it's amazing how overlooked all of that stuff is.

Love this! I've always loved that witchcraft is really flexible for the individual but I can understand that the way media sometimes paints it that it can feel like there's only one or a few ways to practice. The meditation bit makes so much sense. I've spent the majority of my 1st year understanding what exactly that means for me and I finally have a suitable way to meditate and stay grounded. I enjoy your videos so much! ❤

Hey Thorn, isn't this the very difference between "high" magic and "low" magic? High magic being the Art practiced by the wealthy, with gold and silver implements and the free witchcraft practiced by the regular people, using household items. A "high" ceremonial magician once tried to insult me by calling me a "low" magic witchcraft practitioner, I giggled.

I find it hard to practice my spirituality without stuff. I am a minimalist by nature, I always have been. Coming into witchcraft, paganism, etc and seeing everyone practicing with stuff is just discouraging. I don't want an altar, I don't want tons of tarot decks and crystals but it makes u feel less of a witch/pagan/spiritual person when u don't want those things. It gets to a point where u do take those things away and you're left with the thought "Well without any of the stuff, I can't DO anything." so as much as people say you don't need stuff to be a witch, it definitely feels like that's not true. Because then those exact same people will turn around after saying that and show you all their stuff! 😂 Confusing. Currently I am taking a break from spirituality, because its actually become a burden at present, and this is one of the reasons.

      @@nicholethereadingmomma9050
@Nichole the Reading Momma I don't do spellcraft but I do ritual, and divination. I'm happy to say since this comment 11 months ago I have managed to find a nice balance between having the stuff, and also not needing any physical tools for other things. Divination - I have a few decks now, - and for ritual ans other spiritual work, I mainly use journeying via meditation. I still don't have a lot of tools and I am happy about that! I agree with what u mean about how it depends on what you are doing in your spirituality, in some parts I do but in some parts I don't. Another development is that if you are not heavily invested in a specific practice, just using things to get by without having to purchase is fine for me. However if I am really invested and interested, and keen to develop, purchasing that thing can help to learn and improve (my experience being cartomancy with tarot). I guess like you say, it's all about priorities and what the spiritual practice is. Also my minimalism has had to have a bit of a revisit, I prefer having less than more but there was a real shadow about spending and allowing myself to have stuff I enjoy. Real struggle sometimes between just being a capitalist crazy consumer, and actually having things you use and love to have.

I had one book when I embarked on this path and used things we already had in the family home for my altar and spells, and that really was all I needed for a long time 😊
