- On May 9, reacting to the racial comments from former Chairman of Indian Overseas Congress Sam Pitroda, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed dismay.
"He has lowered the level of politics. These personal, caste-based accusations, discrimination...the public will answer this in the elections," said Eknath Shinde.

पित्रोदा और Congress पार्टी में शामिल अन्य हिंदू धर्मावलंबियों को मेरा नमस्कार। यह सच है कि सैम पित्रोदा जैसे निचले तबके के कई लोगों ने हीन भावना और अत्यधिक गरीबी से बचने के लिए धर्म परिवर्तन किया। कई राजाराम डोनाल्ड सैमुअल बन गए, जनार्दन रॉबर्ट फ्रेडरिक बन गए। ऐसे अधिकांश लोग हमारी पार्टी का जनाधार हैं। सैम पित्रोदा की शक्ल देखकर यह अंदाजा लगाना आसान है कि धर्म परिवर्तन के समय उनकी पृष्ठभूमि क्या रही होगी। सैम पित्रोदा की हताशा है यह समझ में आता है क्योंकि वह अपनी शक्ल-सूरत से चिंतित है जो "अभी चिड़ियाघर से बाहर आया है, चिंब" जैसा दिखता है। लेकिन सैम पित्रोदा को ये बात खुलेआम नहीं कहनी चाहिए. इससे उनके जैसे अन्य कनवर्ट विशेषकर विल्सन दंपत्ति जैसे विदेशी आप्रवासी कनवर्ट प्रभावित होंगे।
