At one point my collection had a three hamiltons and a certina. The boxes other than branding were clearly the same, the straps across hamilton, tissot and certina also clearly the same. so yeah, Swatch group does have a lot of overlap in parts, they just slap the right logo on each one.
After a longer wait than expected this watch finally arrived! This watch is as stunning as your video portrays it to be! Thank you so much for sharing this gem with us! I did change the band to something more vintage and cannot take my eyes off it! Thanks again Sir! Appreciate you!
I thought your big complaint was going to be the 60 at the top of the dial. The time is never 11:60... after number 59, minutes and seconds reset to zero so the top of the dial should be 00, not 60. I saw on the complaint page shown that someone complained about the Roman "IIII" being used instead of "IV" ... That's not an error, both are correct and IIII is very traditional dating back to some of the earliest clocks. The reasoning was simply that IIII makes the dial look more balanced.
@@timcarlstrand5890 LOL, it does kind of bug me but you'll see a lot of field watches that are like that, even going back to WWII, so it's not really a mistake or unique to this watch....
@@sealevelbear Yes of course but in time keeping, zero is included as a number. A minute or an hour is measured from 00 to 59... it's 58...59...00...01, not 58...59...60...01, ergo the dial is wrong.
The salmon color is definitely versatile and I agree, looks more expensive than it is. Good size for my 6.5 in wrist. Always been fascinated by mechanical jump hour watches. I was looking at the Stauer Dashtronic but so-so reviews. Thanks for the find! Great videos, even my wife says does Jody have another video today and she doesn’t even wear a watch but enjoys your humor and role playing videos.
Fab watch and review Jody. I have another two “moans and niggles” for your list that prevented me picking this one up: 1) Mineral Crystal. Most would easily add the small extra cost for Sapphire. 2) The size/design/positioning of the primary Minute hand: This is a Jump Hour, so what we really want to see is the star of the show - the hour disc jumping over every hour! But the minute hand covers it up on exactly the hour! And the hand even has a round aperture that could easily encircle the hour-window and highlight the numeral behind the hand. But they positioned the circle too high!
I love how you uncover some really nice watches for not a lot of money at all!! I feel like if companies like San Martin and Pagani really put their minds to it , they can give the big watch makers a real bit of competition.
I'm sure others have mentioned this, but... Thank you Jody for bringing us these nice watches AND those funny t-shirts. There is a lot of work behind that as well.
I’ve been eyeing this one for about 6 months and am so glad you decided to review it. I don’t own a “dress” watch and if I figured I’d start looking. I really liked this watch I definitely had questions. Most of which you answered. So thank you.
I for one will be waiting for the green dial variant with gold hands and minute markers. The only thing I wish they would do is use a black wheel with white font on the movement's hour wheel, as that would add that much needed extra touch of class to REALLY sell the high-end look even further.
A compelling and enjoyable video as always, Jody! Merkur branding on everything except the watch face doesn't bother me as the watch face is the only place branding is truly noticeable to either the wearer or admiring observers. Packaging and paperwork gets forgotten on a closet shelf anyway, and who really looks at the buckle, let alone the case back? Agree though it would be nice if the crown said "PP" instead of "M". The one other area I see as a visible cost-cutting measure is the raised portion of dial to allow economical flat printing of "Pierre Paulin" and "Automatic". It interrupts the visual integrity of that beautiful radial texturing and fairly broadcasts that it's a molded dial. Still: unusual movement, well executed vintage looks and a terrific 38mm case size. Color me tempted!
That does make me wonder if this watch would be better suited to a sterile dial. It would allow Merkur to keep their branding on the crown/caseback/etc without clashing, and it might even elevate the dial pattern without the branding interrupting the design
The # 60 in the Dial is fine, it is both 60 and 00, and the former looks better. The best way to understand it is with Midnight, it is both 12:00am snd 00:00
Great review, Jody! That's a really nice looking watch, and I like the distortion through the crystal. The attention to detail is also nice. I guess for $120 you have to put up with a little off-branding. :)
My biggest niggle is that they gave you these Breguet hands with an eye that does not line up with the hour display. It feels like that was the effect they were looking for.
Nice watch. Great video. Novelty setup is interesting, but I always find that eventually, when it comes to reading the time, you just can't beat the classic two-hand configuration.
You got me excited when you mentioned the 36mm version, but it's in some kind of weird 62mas case! Guess they had some spare parts they needed to clear out.
Great review as always! One thing that kind of bothers me though, is that the circle on the minute hand should line up with the hour indicator underneath so it could be read easier.
I would have left out the '30' numerals all together. Not a fan when they're chopped off that much. It would have been cool if the circle in the minutes hand lined up with the hour display window. Everything else looks kinda cool though.
What an excellent watch for the price. Dial colour, texture, overall design aesthetic along with the jump hour, very unique. I will probably own this soon.
A full jump hour (hours/mins/secs) would be great, especially with a 70s style case and rectangular dial. Plenty of cheap, quartz ones around, but they're not really the same.
Mr. Jones has a few jump hours in their catalog. I'd love to see a review on one of theirs in general since they use very generic cases for all their offerings.
for $125 it's a neat complication and I'd take a punt on it. You've been knocking it out of the park finding interesting watches for very affordable prices :)
For me, a jump hour watch is how an analog watch should work. One major problem though: I need a magnifying glass to read the hour! So, not for tired eyes 😢. Unless they're using a hand for that.
The more I look at it, the more I like it. I think I can get quickly used to the jump hour design. I would like to see a more retro-looking band on it, though. If anything lets it down, it's the band.
Doctor Jody it is not just inexpensive Chinese brands that have identity crises. I have a watch from the '80s that has a Tudor logo on the face and a Rolex crown on the crown. It also says "case by Rolex" on the back.
I have a Geckota Jump Hour watch with an enamel black dial and an acrylic crystal. It also sports a Chinese movement although I am not sure it is the same one.
Curious to know whether you had any legibility issues in reading the hour display. I was always interested in this watch but am concerned that with my aging eyesight I won't be able to read the hour.
The one thing that this watch can improve on is the size of Hour window after all its jump "Hour" watch, it looks smaller like date window than a "Hour Window".
Hello JODY, somewhat surprised you did not mention the one real flaw of this Watch: the Minute hand blocks the jumping Hour Window, instead of the Circle encompassing and enhancing it ! (by lowering it; and increasing its diameter somewhat ?). Otherwise it is a really nice and beautiful Watch, well worth it's price.
Funny, I wouldn't have cared so much about the branding. It's the small size of the hour window that bugs me. I'm sure they were kinda stuck with what they could pull off with the off the shelf movement, but seems small and tight. Also, I don't know what it would have done to the looks, but having a skeletonized minute hand that allowed you to see the hour when it jumps would have been a nice touch.
I hope a micro brand like baltic or something makes a good looking jump hour with this movement, I don’t know what it is but counting the jump hour complication which is amazing, it sort of looks like a 100 dollarish watch.
Good find. Love the dial especially the fonts, like the distortion from the glass and a jump hour is great fun for a watch this price. And let's be honest here, it won't be a daily wearer for most so odd movements like it at a reasonable price can find a popular niche. But for the life of me I can't see how that beautiful dial fits into such a utilitarian case. Maybe better in the flesh? I don't know. Maybe. As for returns to China if your watch is delivered faulty, does anyone bother or simply take the hit?
Not bad... not bad... I usually don't jump on this gimicky/quirky watches but I think I might have to order one of these. The branding doesn't bother me too much though it would be nice to at least have a P on the crown but then, my $300 Seikos don't have any letters on the crown. A bigger thing for me is the grey strap. If I order one, no doubt I'll use that grey band on another watch but man that dial is screaming out for a chestnut band or maybe something even a bit lighter.
Great looking and fun watch for the money! But why don't they just add a few extra $ on the price and make matching branding on the crown and caseback at least? I think most buyers would pay a little extra to have it look more consistent and complete.
Um not sure Jody? I mean 10:10 just doesn’t look the same.😵💫 Honestly that is a lovely looking watch. Unfortunately I bought the Merkur watch with salmon dial, small sub dial & normal hands last year. Then again I do like salmon!😍🤪👍🏼
Good review Jody on both the pros and cons. Why on earth didn't they just put Merkur on the dial? It's a better name anyway than Pierre Paulin, whom I'm assuming has never existed.
Yeah, apparently they 'bought the name' a few years ago, but I'm not sure if it was just a name, or there is a back catalogue somewhere. I don't hate it, it's probably better for this style of watch than Merkur or FOD. But they should make more of it than the rather token effort of branding this one.
Hah, I actually really like this one! It could be my "conversation piece." But I just spent $111 on a Casio Wave Ceptor that you made me aware of. :) Thanks Jody!
Hah, for the price I think it does a good job of pulling off the "fashionably European" look.. the goofy name isn't even half bad! Coulda fooled me! 😂 I think that's a real nice bargain, something different and entertaining for us less well-heeled folks.
Beautiful watch for a great price. For me, the hand of the seconds is just a bit too short. But the minute hand is way too short. It would be nice if the Breguette circle in the hand just covers up the hours window. Great and different looking watch, but just a bit too much cost saving execution for rme to buy one.
I have a Dubey & Schaldebrand jump hour which I adore but I can no longer afford watches like this. This cheap watch looks very nice BUT they would need to remove the partially cut-thru 30 for me to consider it
I could see the Merkur brand on the dial if they want to go all in for it. If its done correctly, i think a one word name fits better that a two word name for watches anyway. Color match wheel?
I would have preferred a little polishing, and kept the branding as Merkur. I also believe most people would have been happy to pay little for a sapphire crystal. Otherwise, great value for money
Nice piece, would make an affordable dress watch with a twist. By the way, was it a filmic device that you let the take that dealt with your biggest issue with the watch run backwards?
Just to chime in on my experience with Merkur. The watches appear to be well made. The chinese movements are a little hit and miss. But let's be realistic, where can you find a mechanical jumping hour movement or a mechanical chronograph movement anywhere near the price points they are offering. I personally bought one of the vintage styled Pierre Paulin chronographs. Beautiful watch but the movement went out about 4 months in. I contacted Merkur for warranty support and it is quite a bit lacking. Responses are very intermittent. And I often had to email multiple times before getting a response. Had to deal with some stock issues on there end but I did eventually get a replacement watch. Which I am happy with but, the ordeal really did sour my experience. Just to give you an idea it took over 20 emails and over a year to get it worked out. I would only pull the trigger on a Merkur if you are not afraid of possibly not getting what you want. Honestly this watch is nearing the impulse buy price point where even if it didn't work out it might be okay (for a Jumping Hour watch).
I can't imagine a Breguet covered in Swatch branding but for some reason I can imagine a Blancpain.
We shouldn't be surprised next year when Breguet will have Swatch branding thy call it a collaboration.
Abraham Breguet would become an actual tourbillion in his grave
