Thank you for introducing me to this! Its the very first time i've heard of a commonplace book and its just what I am looking for. First quote: “We live in a very creative age, why not keep a collection of the words that spark joy within you.“ - Nat from Illustrious Shadow Planning
I don't think there is anything wrong with blending journaling with commonplacing. It can actually be a good technique because while you gather quotes and the like you can reflect upon them in the same place to reach a greater understanding.
Thank you - I think it makes it more accessible but I can see how a purist would find it a bit much. I love the flexibility of planning and common place systems and that we can all make those decisions in our own personal spaces :) x
That’s what I have been doing since I was 8 yo - combining comminplacing and journaling. It’s just kinda sad to me that I never seem to go back and re-read the quotes I collected - I write a lot and by now have 75 volumes, lol. And who knows what treasures are hidden within 😅
I did my first commonplace book without knowing it has a name. I did it because I read a lot, listen to audiobooks, and listen to podcasts, and when I was still working my co-workers or friends asked where I had read or heard that information, and I couldn't find that information again. I follow quite many podcasts (Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson and many others) and I couldn't remember who said and what. So, I began to make few notes about podcasts (date, Spotify or RUclips, Pinterest, book's name, etc.). I make notes about things I am interested or maybe something brief mention what is the origin of the word or thing. I keep my commonplace book in English if I find the information in English, Swedish if the information is written in Swedish, or my own language Finnish. I think so I can keep the information correct, because I could make a translation error. Now i am retired so I have all the time in this world to make them more interesting, add pictures, lyrics, poems etc. Thank you very much, I learned a lot from you!
Hi Anne, that sounds like a great use of the system! I love how you use your different languages too - I can imagine it would become confusing if you tried to translate between them all (as well as the translation errors, like you say!). I hope you continue to enjoy common placing and using your new time to get more creative :) x
You could've just left it at 'I follow many podcasts) but for some reason you really wanted people to know that you listen to Rogan and Peterson, lol. Why is that?
I love my commonplace book. In the past I would always cut out famous quotes and little pictures that I like, but they would just pile up and I would eventually lose them. I discovered on RUclips a book called the commonplace book. It blew my mind away now I have a place to keep all these great quotes and little doodles that I like to keep.
Oh I hadn't thought of putting doodles in it (probably because my drawing skills are lacking, ha). What a great idea! It sounds like your commonplace book is a true reflection of all those little bits you love. Perfect! x
Tbh I've been trying to watch commonplace book tours to get inspired but unless they are also aesthetically pleasing or artistic, I can't retain interest and that might just be because I'm an artist too and love collaging and stuff LOL. I think your book is really pretty, and it's your book so you should do what you want!! For the quote on the navy blue card, maybe trace over the text with a white gel pen? Anyway, thank you for sharing! I feel more inspired to start one now ♥
Thank you! Yes, I definitely need a bit 'more' than just writing things down to keep me interested! Unfortunately the navy card quote is on shiny plastic-y sticker paper so I don't think it'd work to write over it. I could possibly do it it with a fine white Posca but it has a high chance of being ruined :/ Maybe I'll try it one day when I feel brave! x ETA - I have just tried it with the fine Posca! It looks so much better, thank you! x
I think you'd have to have nerves of absolute steel to read that! But yes, that would be really interesting. I'd love to know what he felt was striking enough to document x
I really like your commonplace book! The decorations make it so unique and personalised. I definitely should try this. I used to copy lyrics and poems in my notebooks as a teen and loved it.
I love your commonplace book. Making it pretty like that would make you want to go back and read it again, which is also the point of them. I've been keeping one for years and found that I didn't like the book format (I never had any index). I now use index cards and keep them in photo boxes. That way, it's easier for me to find the things I want. Recipes for example. Rather than hunting through several books, I can just go to the right section in the cards. Obviously, it's not nearly as attractive as your book though. Thank you xx
I’m going to purchase a journal soon to use as a common place book/memory keeping journal. Till then I’ve been writing things down on the notes app on my phone. Although honestly I think it’s heading more towards a “brain dump” journal of sorts.
That sounds like a great idea. I do think we can put too much pressure on ourselves to fit into boxes, if you want it to be a memory keeping - commonplace hybrid and it works for you, then no problem! As long as you enjoy creating in it. :) x
I made an attempt to use my Hobonichi A6 HON as a commonplace book this year, but somehow it did not stick… maybe I‘ll try again with an undated book. I often have notes I want to keep and at the moment I jot them down in my planner which is also unpractical since I usually have to search for them afterwards. Thanks for sharing this, it was really helpful ! 😊
No problem! I’m glad you found it useful :) I find an undated book feels like a lot less pressure as you’re not trying to keep up with a time constraint too. Hope that works out better for you! X
Interesting point! I think in my mind the largest difference would be that in a floralegium the text is directly related to the illustrations, and is more encyclopaedic in nature, cataloguing for long term preservation rather than for fun like I do. I do think you're right in that a non-indexed commonplace book probably does need a more specific name as it straddles the two concepts! x
@@lurst yes mine wouldn’t have cost much more than that! I’ve had another look at the cover and I can’t see any other indications of where it is but I know we didn’t have a Flying Tiger in my area when I bought it. Mine is about 10 years old I think! X
It’s not for everyone! I think for me it’s nice to keep track of things that resonate with me in one place. I can totally see how it wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea though :) x

4:46 Who else would love to get a peek at H.P. Lovecraft's commonplace book? It would be worth all the nightmares and insomnia.

Same, I had notebooks full of lyrics and random quotes growing up! Thank you ☺️x

It’s called Zettelcasten, Scott Scheper wrote a whole book about notecard note taking
3:40 Was that a Monty Python reference? 😅 Brilliant.
Of course! ;) Big Monty Python fan, haha. x

It's pre-internet tumblr, basically
Slightly less dodgy, but yes. Though that depends on the individual I guess XD x
Would a non-indexed commonplace book like yours be similar to floralegium, or do you think there are significant differences?

Where did u buy the notebook?!
Unfortunately I can’t remember - I think it was somewhere like Paperchase or The Range (both UK shops) x
The inserts look a lot like one I got from Tiger, but mine has a different cover, 3 quid I believe

Thanks! Big fan. Grew up on it! x
@@IllustriousShadowPlans we just showed our eight year old Holy Grail
Too tedious and complicated to me. I don't see what the interest is

I love the way you commonplace 🤍 I'm the same in the fact that I have to decorate my pages or else I lose interest! 😅
Haha, exactly! I am so quick to lose interest, though I do love the simple spreads that some people manage to make. Just not something I could do! x
