ER Nurse Brings Coworkers Together to Feed Homeless

- Once a month, Renown ER Nurse, Rae Mangat, RN, and nearly a dozen of her coworkers and their family members come together to cook meals and feed more than 400 homeless people.
Mangat, who works at South Meadows Medical Center, began the volunteer project more than three years ago as part of the Sikh Sewa Society of Reno. "A couple of things inspired me to do this. As an ER nurse at Renown South Meadows, we see a lot of homeless coming in for just a hot meal," says Mangat. "I wanted to do something for the community and have our Renown members help me do this. I've been at Renown for 14 years and it brings the doctors and nurses together as a family making positive changes."
The group prepare the meals at the Sikh Temple Reno and take them to the Community Assistance Center the last Sunday of the month.
Part of the goal of the Sikh Society of Reno is to make residents more aware of their religion. "It is part of our religion and faith to be helpful," says Sikh Society Member Jesse Bhatia.
Renown ER Doctor Sam Shields and his wife, Julia, are among the volunteers. They bring about 400 cookies to feed the homeless and also help with the cooking and serving.
"These people are just absolutely grateful. They are so humble and so much gratitude is given to you because they're getting food which they desperately need. You get paid back in full and then some," says Julia Shields.

Sikh people are always God gifts because in the year 2002 while my father was suffering from decease at that time we admit him in Safdarjung hospital in New Delhi. At that time we come to New Delhi at first so we have no idea but one Sikh brother help us too much which is really great.

As a Bengali people, I can say that if I respect any religion after Hinduism, it is Sikhism. The sacrifice of these two nations for the independence of India is the most accepted.

Proud of my Sikh heritage.
I have so much respect as an Afghan and Muslim for the Sikh community. They are the gift of god to the world. So much respect that I learned to speak fluent Punjabi on my own. I belong to a Sikh sangat and I have been to Harmandir Sahib and it truly is a life changing experience. I started working with a Sikh family in their store in 2019 since then they have treated me as their own son to the point of even taking me to the local Gurdwara. Singh=king and I for one will always love the Sikh community

Service or Seva as they say in India is the integral part of Sikhism, they do not sit and pray for people in difficulty, They act with compassion and serve just like the Reverred 10 Gurus.They were and still humiliated for their attire but they do not budge and serve without discrimination.Sikhs, Brothers and sisters,words cannot describe your greatness, in tears while writing this.
