The vantage was on Old Country Road where 135 now crosses. The big houses were moved and or demolished to make way for 135 Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway. Whoever is taking the picture was looking south. Old Country Road runs East and west. Back in 1959 the Memorial Day Parade started at the intersection of South Oyster Bay Road and ran east to Central Park Road. In 1959 I think it ended at the Plainview Fire Department on Old Country Road just east of where the clip is being filmed. Show less
That was Old Country Rd,just east of Grohmans lane,I was 2 years old at that time, remember some of those firetrucks,my neighbor was a fire chief in Plainview for several years, some of those trucks were in use till late 70s,maybe 1980, wonder what they did with them?
If I remember correctly the Memorial Day Parade didn't start going down Washington Avenue until after the Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park pool opened in 1960. If you look carefully at 1:31 (you'll need to stop it) I believe you can see the old Burger Square. My mom used to take us there to eat. There is a big sign with a boy holding a big burger (or tray of them) advertising them for 15 cents which is what they cost. I remember the building also had a small sign advertising that you got 4 extra bites because the burgers were square (one bite on each corner), although I don't see that. Later the McDonalds opened across the street and put them out of business. I think that's the location. If so, the parade is moving east on Old Country Road in the direction of the firehouse and hospital. It looks like this may have been before the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway was built, cutting the town in half. They started building it in 1958 according to Wiki. At :50 you can see a broad open field on the opposite side of the road. That may have been part of the right-of-way for the expressway, although I remember they tore down some homes as well to put the road in.
Bob Needham Bob you are correct, just before RT. 135 OPENED, they are east bound,1 block east of Grohmans lane, parade started in shopping center at old country rd.about 1\2 mile east of so. Oyster Bay Rd.forget name of market in there,it's now John's farms market.
I remember it as Hamburger Square, but they had the best burgers. I remember when a new burger place called McDonalds opened across the street. Burger square didn't last much longer after that.
@@lindaweigl3982 There is a good chance of it, although I’m struggling to connect your name to a face. Was it different when you were in St Prius? When the school opened I was in first grade, and our class was the first one to go through all grades there. Or at least that’s how I remember.
Kind of sad. The town seems like it had a great sense of community back in those days. Now people just stay at home and barely speak to their next-door neighbors.
I grew up there from 1954. Our whole life was Morton Blvd . And Saint Pius X parish. My father still lives there and has wonderful neighbors! Some of them are people who grew up on the block.
@@lindaweigl3982 That was the same year my family moved there. Do you remember getting milk from the farm on Washington Ave. It was where the Jr high that was later built

I don't know, but it seems like it might be Washington Avenue - is that possible?
