I watched your channel when I was studying Russian in 2020. I switched to Ukrainian in 2021. It was tough because there were no much channels like this. I'm glad that you decided to teach Ukrainian now. It makes me happy how Ukrainians are speaking Ukrainian again. It makes me feel special because I chose to learn this language. Many people had told me that Ukrainian was useless and I should only learn Russian. 💕😍
Hands down the best introduction to the Ukrainian alphabet I've seen for English speakers. I'm still struggling hard with putting sounds to symbols, but this video makes me feel like I at least have a chance lol. Thank you!
Thank you Nika, this is very helpful. I'm American and teach English online to a Ukrainian student and thought I would like to learn Ukrainian in turn, as I plan to travel there after the war. Because my grandparents spoke Slovak in the home, I develped an ear for Slavic pronounciation and some basic vocabulary as a child many, many years ago. That is coming in handy now, because I can immediately pronounce Ukrainian words I hear. However, the reading is a real challenge because of the Cyrilic alphabet. I'm making good progress for now through listening, but I know that as soon as I'm able to read my learning will accelerate. Your technique for teaching reading is excellent and the organization and pacing is very well-done. Likewise with your examples of pronounciation. (I've been a teacher for over 40 years and know a good teacher when I meet one) Thank you for presenting these lessons. I'm sure I'll watch many of your videos more than once.

I'm glad that you are giving Ukrainian lessons now. Actually I commented weeks ago that after some years learning Russian I decided to change into Ukrainian, even before the war started, for quite a number of reasons. It is not easy to find good teachers of Ukrainian here in youtube, so your decision to teach Ukrainian is good news!

I just subscribed, because song to learn alphabet is one of best way to learn and most of all remembering and allow to be able to form Ukraine word or vocabulary and be able to read simple word like street, airline and bus (bus riding is more usual than airline as we use bus to go place to place in MOST of the time!), line schedules. Slowly and eventually be able to read child's book, children's book, and when we are able to read elementary book is huge progress and able to read junior high school meaning huge progress plus and be able to read high school book meaning, we have basically mastered Ukraine and one can enroll college course using high school level Ukraine language (even enjoy watch and understand virtually al Ukraine language movies and appreciate Ukraine songs that is strange to English speaking people that has NO feelings!), should be able to pass college level course with high school background. USA

Just a video idea; I would personally be glad if you could make a video on the first conjugation for present tense, with 10 examples or more. It’s really hard to find examples and in video format it is a lot easier to learn and follow, because you can hear it and read it at the same time, which is especially useful in a new language when you’re not familiar with the sound and rhythm of the language

Слушат (to listen) _____ я слушаю (I listen) Ты слушаешь (you listen) Он слушает (he listens) Она слушает (she listens) Мы слушаем (we listen) Вы слушаете (you both listen) Они слушают (they listen) _________ I learned that by watching a video playlist called 100 Russian verbs.. By this teacher Ksenia.. It has 20 lessons in the series... Basically each lesson has 5 verbs with their endings according to which pronoun the speaker is talking about is doing the action... _____/// I do not know the verb endings in Ukrainian... I assume it's similar.. But... I'm not sure.. I never studied Ukr...
This is the first video of yours that I've watched. The RUclips algorithm finally recommended this. to me.I watched, clicked Like and Subscribed right away. I had learned a few Ukrainian words in the last year and a half but I hadn't really studied your language. I had printed the Ukrainian Cyrillic alphabet but I had not learned the sounds. I had started picking up some of them just from seeing them and using Google Translate. But this video was like unlocking the door for me.I thank you! I then checked out your channel. The next video I watched was "STAND WITH UKRAINE! My country is on fire." As an American from Texas, I've been outraged since 24 Feb, 2022. I cannot imagine what you've been through in that time. I've been following the WAR closely and every day I watch 10-15 Ukraine focused videos. And for most I spend more time reading comments, replying to some and making a few comments myself. I learn a lot in the comment sections from a large international community. I look forward to learning your language. I appreciate the way you have your playlists organized. Thank you! Great questions! Yes, these letters do soften the previous consonant, f. e. In the words гуЛЯти або ЛЬОн Л becomes soft. But what is interesting, that not all the Ukrainian consonants have a soft pair, some of them just become a bit softer but the sounds remains hard. I think I will layer make a video about this.
Hi Nika! I just finished my first class of Ukrainian and I loved it. I still make errors with г and ґ pronunciation and the O accent , but I will correct them with practice.. and remembering that Spanish "O" sounds also "O" independent of place in the word like you showed in the video for Ukrainian "O" I believe You're the only person one can enjoy looking at practicing pronunciation of letters!!. I will be waiting for Ukrainian lesson 2. Bye!
Wow Nika, this is fantastic!! l've always said that languages open a door to another world, and you made me interested in your native language as well!! there are a few striking differences with Russian alfabet, what I learned today from the first watch (I plan to watch it again and again later): the reduction for e and o is not present (that makes pronunciation easier I think), there's no hard sign ъ but instead an apostrophe that makes the same function, the sound of ukrainian и is kind of similar to the russian ы, right? the ukrainian г sounds different from russian г and there's a letter that is pronounced exactly like the russian г (don't have the keyword set to ukrainian language) and is written similar, the ukrainian i which is pronounced as russian и ... what else?? need to rewatch again!! Hope you keep on going, a big hug from Venezuela!!

The fact that Ukrainian also has an apostrophe just broke my heart. I always have hard time when I have to switch the keyboard page to find it when I'm typing in English, and now Ukrainian has is also 😭
An apostrophe is considered a letter in the Ukrainian language, so it is often found on a regular keyboard page where there are letters) And on a computer keyboard, it is found where the sign ~ or the Russian letter "Ё"

И is so confusing to me. The IPA given here is [ɪ] but the pronunciation I hear is closer /ɨ/. Is this subject to regional variations? [ɪ] seems to be further back in the mouth in Ukrainian.
Hi Nika. Firstly, thank you for this lesson. Secondly, may I ask (possibly putting the cart before the horse and if so, sorry) is there a way of mastering the "spelling" with words containing і, ї, и and й I am a lousy speller andI seem to always use the wrong letters.
This is my first time ever to learn Ukranian. Really impressive, I should say. I can see my basic understanding of Russian is of big help when learning Ukranian. I'm a Korean expat living in China for the last 20 years. My first impression is as follows. 1. Ukranian is to Russian just as Cantonese is to Standard Mandarin Chinese. (Mostly understandable when written, but many parts not when spoken) Better mutual intelligibility than between Chinese dialects. 2. Same letters, though with a small difference and basically the same pronunciation with small differences, too. 3. The more colloquial the situation, the more different are the words. ex) це (это) , зараз (сейчас) , з (из) , працювати (работать) , etc. 4. In terms of pronunciation, Ukranian does not show heavy consonant palatalization as it does in Russian. I think that seen from an academical view, it would be by far better if you put Russian text instead of English, mainly because most people who're trying to learn Ukranian already have a basic command of Russian, just like me.
according to my ukrainian grammar book, the letter “ґ” was banned by the ussr, so ukrainian people had to use “г” for both g/h sounds. it’s quite disturbing to learn these facts to be honest, but makes me even more motivated to learn ukrainian. this was such a nice lesson. thank you so much. 💙💛
That is true, and it was returned only in 90-s after the formation of independency. The Ukrainian language had a huge influence by the Russian language, or even worse, many times was banned and considered as so called "small russian language". That is the reason why there are so many russian speaking people in Ukraine, because russian was imposed here for many generations.
Besides, a lot of Russian words were put in Ukrainian. Some of them are used even now such as лимон or апельсин, however Ukrainian is цитрина, помаранча
@@ЄвгенійПанасенко-н2к These two words have not russian roots, апельсин - китайське яблуко з французької, лимон також з грецької чи італійської. But you are absolutely right, there are a lot of words in Ukrainian that appeared because of russiafication of Ukraine.

I like trying to learn new words so I can understand the meaning.. I personally think that songs are more enjoyable when you understand the meaning.. So that is why I learn Russian... But.. Just a video idea; I would personally be glad if you could make a video on the first conjugation for present tense, with 10 examples or more. It’s really hard to find examples and in video format it is a lot easier to learn and follow, because you can hear it and read it at the same time, which is especially useful in a new language when you’re not familiar with the sound and rhythm of the language

I learned that by watching a video playlist called 100 Russian verbs.. By this teacher Ksenia.. It has 20 lessons in the series... Basically each lesson has 5 verbs with their endings according to which pronoun the speaker is talking about is doing the action...

This is the first video of yours that I've watched. The RUclips algorithm finally recommended this. to me.I watched, clicked Like and Subscribed right away. I had learned a few Ukrainian words in the last year and a half but I hadn't really studied your language. I had printed the Ukrainian Cyrillic alphabet but I had not learned the sounds. I had started picking up some of them just from seeing them and using Google Translate. But this video was like unlocking the door for me.I thank you!
I then checked out your channel. The next video I watched was "STAND WITH UKRAINE! My country is on fire." As an American from Texas, I've been outraged since 24 Feb, 2022. I cannot imagine what you've been through in that time. I've been following the WAR closely and every day I watch 10-15 Ukraine focused videos. And for most I spend more time reading comments, replying to some and making a few comments myself. I learn a lot in the comment sections from a large international community.

In future could you do a lesson explaining ю and я? I know they are pronounced as [yu] and [ya], but do they soften the preceding consonant (in гуляти, for example)?
I also have a question about ь: Is льон pronounced as [soft-L ON] or [softL YON]?
Thank you! Great questions! Yes, these letters do soften the previous consonant, f. e. In the words гуЛЯти або ЛЬОн Л becomes soft. But what is interesting, that not all the Ukrainian consonants have a soft pair, some of them just become a bit softer but the sounds remains hard. I think I will layer make a video about this.

I just finished my first class of Ukrainian and I loved it. I still make errors with г and ґ pronunciation and the O accent , but I will correct them with practice.. and remembering that Spanish "O" sounds also "O" independent of place in the word like you showed in the video for Ukrainian "O"
I believe You're the only person one can enjoy looking at practicing pronunciation of letters!!.

Wow Nika, this is fantastic!! l've always said that languages open a door to another world, and you made me interested in your native language as well!! there are a few striking differences with Russian alfabet, what I learned today from the first watch (I plan to watch it again and again later): the reduction for e and o is not present (that makes pronunciation easier I think), there's no hard sign ъ but instead an apostrophe that makes the same function, the sound of ukrainian и is kind of similar to the russian ы, right? the ukrainian г sounds different from russian г and there's a letter that is pronounced exactly like the russian г (don't have the keyword set to ukrainian language) and is written similar, the ukrainian i which is pronounced as russian и ... what else?? need to rewatch again!!

The fact that Ukrainian also has an apostrophe just broke my heart. I always have hard time when I have to switch the keyboard page to find it when I'm typing in English, and now Ukrainian has is also 😭
An apostrophe is considered a letter in the Ukrainian language, so it is often found on a regular keyboard page where there are letters) And on a computer keyboard, it is found where the sign ~ or the Russian letter "Ё"

И is so confusing to me. The IPA given here is [ɪ] but the pronunciation I hear is closer /ɨ/. Is this subject to regional variations? [ɪ] seems to be further back in the mouth in Ukrainian.

This is my first time ever to learn Ukranian. Really impressive, I should say.
I can see my basic understanding of Russian is of big help when learning Ukranian.
I'm a Korean expat living in China for the last 20 years. My first impression is as follows.
1. Ukranian is to Russian just as Cantonese is to Standard Mandarin Chinese.
(Mostly understandable when written, but many parts not when spoken)
Better mutual intelligibility than between Chinese dialects.
2. Same letters, though with a small difference and basically the same pronunciation with small differences, too.
3. The more colloquial the situation, the more different are the words.
ex) це (это) , зараз (сейчас) , з (из) , працювати (работать) , etc.
4. In terms of pronunciation, Ukranian does not show heavy consonant palatalization as it does in Russian.
I think that seen from an academical view, it would be by far better if you put Russian text instead of English, mainly because most people who're trying to learn Ukranian already have a basic command of Russian, just like me.

according to my ukrainian grammar book, the letter “ґ” was banned by the ussr, so ukrainian people had to use “г” for both g/h sounds. it’s quite disturbing to learn these facts to be honest, but makes me even more motivated to learn ukrainian. this was such a nice lesson. thank you so much. 💙💛
That is true, and it was returned only in 90-s after the formation of independency. The Ukrainian language had a huge influence by the Russian language, or even worse, many times was banned and considered as so called "small russian language". That is the reason why there are so many russian speaking people in Ukraine, because russian was imposed here for many generations.
Besides, a lot of Russian words were put in Ukrainian. Some of them are used even now such as лимон or апельсин, however Ukrainian is цитрина, помаранча
@@ЄвгенійПанасенко-н2к These two words have not russian roots, апельсин - китайське яблуко з французької, лимон також з грецької чи італійської. But you are absolutely right, there are a lot of words in Ukrainian that appeared because of russiafication of Ukraine.
