Probably because Ghosts were meant to counter Psychics, which had notoriously low physical defense. At least after gen 1. The only other types to counter Psychics are Bug and Dark. Plus Gengar and Alakazam are both meant to counter each other, so it makes sense. That's my explanation.
I'll never understand why Ghost was physical while Dark(which mainly consisted of moves like Bite, Knock Off, and Beat Up) was special. It's completely backwards
While type match ups might of not been great since Gengar uses TMs more then most, Gengar is powerful enough that you only have to worry about going up against Pokémon that are strong against its typing since Gengar is a glass canon.
Gengar is such a popular Pokémon it’s a little surprising to see them struggle during the main game so often. But I know people will use Gengar anyway because they love it so much. Aside from losing Levitate, Gengar seems to just get better in every game. And it’s cool that you could use Mega Gengar before winning the Kalos League.
Hey Mystic, I have a video idea. Ever since your BW Team Remastered video, I was curious if you would do B2W2 Remastered, as the original video feels outdated and your format for best teams has changed since. Just thought I’d throw this out for you or anyone who had the same idea!

I disagree, gengar from gen 4 onwards should be an awesome pokemon to use. Even though it relies on TMs, its special attack and speed are high enough to use it amazingly. Also though its learnset is not good, its movepool is awesome. Gen 5-7 you can change its moveset depending on what opponent you face. One can use psychic, thunderbolt, focus blast, dazzling gleam, giga drain for various coverage. I actually found Gengar was extremely good in hgss. He swept half of the gyms in johto, and almost all of the gyms in Kanto, plus 3 members of the elite four. Probably the MVP for the playthrough.
