Small tip: when crustaceans are dead their eyes get cloudy/blue-ish gray pretty fast. That's a good indicator. If the eyes still got their usual/natural color, it's always a good idea to wait with declaring the animal dead. It is better to wait and potentially have a decaying animal in the tank than throwing away a still living animal.
A thing crabs tend to do is when left with low levels of oxygen they go in a sort of hibernation state to save up as much oxygen as possible, most crabs also have a sort of lung system that keeps oxygen when they are not in water or the water has low oxygen. Basically Pancake was probably just taking a power nap
There is nothing wrong being emotional, he may be a crab but he is a beloved pet and member of your family now and showing emotion over pancake just shows how much of a person you are and that's just awesome man.

It’s likely that the ammonia levels are too high from all of the discarded food and poop. The tank has to cycle for a few months before it can balance out. Ammonia, nitrites, nitrates will fluctuate like crazy for a while.Then things will be fine. That’s why you can’t drain the entire tank and replace it with fresh water every time you want to clean it. You have to do frequent 25% water changes and never add chlorinated water straight into the tank.

The filter and protein skimmer will provide more than enough oxygen for the tank. I have three marine aquariums that have been running perfectly for over a decade without air stones. All waste in a tank will turn into ammonia which is very toxic aquatic life. A new tank doesn’t have the bacteria to oxidize ammonia. Once ammonia is present, a bacteria known as nitrosomonas will form and feed off of the ammonia and convert it to nitrites. Nitrites aren’t as bad as ammonia but, still pretty toxic. Once nitrites are present, nitrobacter will form and feed off of the nitrites converting them into nitrates. Nitrates aren’t toxic enough to harm fish unless they are in high numbers. The only way to remove nitrates is to do a partial water change. After this cycle, the water in the tank is alive with all the essential bacteria needed to help sustain life. Removing all the water in the tank or adding chlorinated water will kill all the essential bacteria so, partial water changes and dechlorinated water are important to lower nitrates while keeping the bacteria alive.
Truth be told the amount of care you put into taking care of pancake is honestly commendable, your emotions are justified and i think i would of cried too if i was worried one of my pets was dying.
I have a similar story. I went outside in my backyard to clean my pool and I saw a baby lizard that was upside down. I grabbed a float and jumped in a fished him out. I proceeded to do CPR and it soon started to move. I decided to name him Bambi and he started to stand up. Couple days later I released him once he was in good health.

Hey I’d recommend research, research research whenever getting any pet, ideally before any sort of impulse buy. In regards to Pancake here ask yourself what water conditions go with the seasons, their diet variations throughout the seasons etc, it’s usually not a constant all the time. Also look into behavioural signs of molting and what nutrients Pancake will need to develop a healthy shell
You don’t have to go and match what they eat in the wild exactly but try a wild caught fish from the ocean once in a while, sliced up for them. But yeah, get curious of your pal’s natural lifestyle and what they do in the wild. The better you can replicate that (minus the predators ofc) the more they can thrive.

Loving and getting attached to a crab is no different than a cat or dog in my opinion. They have their own personalities a quarks that make that make them unique.

Could be! What temperature is your aquarium? My blue crab and Dungeness crab became very slow whenever the temp is below 50F. Best temp to keep these fellas active is 55F. 60F is fine too if you have high oxygen content in water. I utilize 2 filters including a marine land bio wheel and a made in Italy wavemaker to provide oxygen for my two crabs.

You should ask a crab expert at an aquarium or something. Crabs need to have evolved a mechanism to survive being trapped in a tiny pool with little oxygen with a bunch of other crabs during low tide. So him being totally inactive to preserve oxygen might be its survival mechanism. But I could be totally wrong. There could also be a mechanism that he needs to actively whirl fresh water with his mouthparts to its gills in order to breath successfully. Therefor him not moving causes him not to be able to start breathing even though the oxygen situation improved. Therefor ask an expert at the (local) zoo / aquarium.

Just saw this. To let you know, the amount of oxygen you add to saltwater using two (or more) bubble diffusers as you are using is negligible. Most of the oxygenation and removal of carbon dioxide occurs at the water's surface. You can us a sump with bio balls or other media to greatly increase this gaseous exchange, but again, those little aerators do nothing.
@@joshmcinnesart It's the same with fresh water. The oxygenation that happens via bubbles is negligible. They do help the water move a little though, and turnover near the surface helps gaseous exchange. A powerhead moving water at the surface would make a huge difference, and most saltwater tanks (and many fresh water) should have currents flowing in them.
I literally feel the same bro, I've watched the video of josh buying him and giving him a home and now I feel the same way as him and pancake. I to have a snake named Zorro (black California King Snake) and he's my world and he also had an issue where he didn't eat for over 7 months and I though I was going to loose him but found out it was a normal habit of him not eating food in the winter like fasting.
Im so happy! I do wanna give you a WARNING! Im no (marine)biologist or anything but i do know, lobsters are very territorial. They fight eachother to the death. So putting pancake in an enclosure with one might not be a good idea. Maybe at first it will be okay because the lobster will also need time to adjust etc. But it might go wrong later.

crabs usually go in a hibernation state when there is not enough oxygen to conserve and save energy reason why it wasn’t moving bc you was bothering it and it wasn’t trying to wake up it was basically in power sleep mode

You can buy an aerator pipe holder with a suction cup in aquarium stores or amazon that holds the aerator in place. Or maybe buy those circular or pipe long aerator that will always stay in place at the bottom. That way you wont have to worry about the aerator going up the surface.

He may not have our mammal sense of awareness for traditional gratitude, but everything you do for him contributes to the comfort & security he feels. I felt the same way when I lost my hermit crabs. I had them for about 3 to 5 years each and they are still my special lil' shell goblins... you're not stupid for getting emotional over a crab. Any life you put the effort into taking care of, be it a dog, a crab, or a person, is an investment of heart and soul. It hurts because you care, and you never would have gone this far for your crabby if you didn't feel something for him.
Hermit crabs grow bigger like any other animal and require larger shells as they do. If you kept them in their original shells, you killed them by suffocation and starvation.

My son had a common goldfish for 15 years and when he unexpectedly died, it was the worst day ever....we were all attached to him - he want from being an inch long to close to 18 inches long and as long as my cat!! We loved him....I can see you are a caring person too🥰 yay Pancake!!!!
I also had a pet store goldfish who lived with me with almost 20yrs living in a tank in my kitchen and she knew who I was. Gave me kisses and reacted to me constantly. She was more than just a fish, it was crazy! When she died it was because the oxygen hose got moved out of the water by someone in the house by accident. I still mourn to this day over it. I wonder how much longer she could have lived for. I have extreme guilt but I know intention is very important and I try to remember it was no ones intent to hurt her. We all loved her and she is buried out by the tree in my moms backyard. It’s not crazy to love a pet like they are family. It’s like sometimes they have something human in them. It’s like an old friend yet there’s no communication through language. It’s beautiful even if it does feel alittle crazy 🌹🤓
I have three common gold fish one of them died so I bought 8 more one of them fell into the sink drain after 3 years all the new goldfish died only one left i tried my best to keep him alive but unfortunately he passed away

If that’s what you need to hear to get through the day that’s fine but just because there was “a little squeeze” doesn’t mean we should view that as a faint sign of life. Crabs are not people so things that apply to people don’t necessarily indicate the same thing when applied to animals. That’s called anthropomorphism. That crab was definitely not alive, it felt like it squeezed because of the anatomy of the way crabs open and close their claws lmao

First of all pancake is probably just getting ready to molt. Also crabs need a way to climb out of the water at times. The lack of air bubbles isn't going up cause any issues for a crab, that isn't the way you oxygenate water anyway. Give him a few days and he'll be fine
We had two large spiders in our cellar and called them Elvira and Antonio. Quite regularly we would see them together, but didn’t have any idea regarding their genders. One day, our cat caught Antonio and we saved him from her. We placed him on a piece of cardboard back into the cellar. Elvira was nowhere to be seen. A day later Antonio was dead and I was surprisingly sad and crying. Later that day I completely lost my composure when Elvira turned up right beside him and stayed close for many hours and then she vanished and we’ve never seen her again. Heck! I don’t even like spiders, actually I hate the ones with hairy legs, but I cried real juicy tears over their ruined lives (and yes, I was angry with my cat😁).
Fun fact: if a crab dies it will start to float up to the surface after like a few hours. If it doesn't float up and it's not moving or it's very weak, do not worry; investigate the back part of the crab and if there's a Crack or a a soft leathery object making its way out, it's at a molding stage and it's eys will be transparent and u shouldn't disturb it

I've been following both Leon from Brady Bradshaw and Pancake, and I'm glad Pancake is okay. I got emotional right there with you, man. I love crustaceans. I find them so interesting to watch. I've been thinking about getting a big ol' tank to get a crawdad in. Supposedly, for their small size in comparison to lobsters and dungeness crabs, they need just as much space. Maybe get both a male and female, and see if they'll mate so I can give them away to other people who are also interested in raising crawdads. :) I can't wait to see how Pancake likes his new tank. His new home. Update us as soon as he's all settled in!

Although it makes us sad to see you sad because you are so kind, your channel is educational in so many ways, and i think by young boys watching you, it will show them that its okay to have emotions as well. Our pets are like our babies, they are family to us. They love us unconditionally and dont judge us, the bonds we have with them are so special for that reason. You're allowed to be emotional over a loss. No one thinks you're stupid. All of us watch you because of who you are, how caring and loving and silly you are, how excited you get over your pets. It makes us so happy to watch you because of that. You are an amazing person and you do really good things. Just keep being you and we will all keep watching! Funny, just the other day I thought about what it would be like to have a pet crab. I cried twice. Sad tears and happy tears for you. I'm an empath, so I feel a large array of emotions. I'm not sure if you are one too. People regularly say that I'm very sensitive. So I completely understand your feelings for the crab. I noticed the first time his antenna moved. Did you let the tank cycle? If not be careful, the cycling processes is very important and most beginners don’t realize their tank has to establish before they ad fish. You seem to be doing alright so keep it up.

Hey I’d recommend research, research research whenever getting any pet, ideally before any sort of impulse buy. In regards to Pancake here ask yourself what water conditions go with the seasons, their diet variations throughout the seasons etc, it’s usually not a constant all the time. Also look into behavioural signs of molting and what nutrients Pancake will need to develop a healthy shell
You don’t have to go and match what they eat in the wild exactly but try a wild caught fish from the ocean once in a while, sliced up for them.
But yeah, get curious of your pal’s natural lifestyle and what they do in the wild. The better you can replicate that (minus the predators ofc) the more they can thrive.

Could be! What temperature is your aquarium? My blue crab and Dungeness crab became very slow whenever the temp is below 50F. Best temp to keep these fellas active is 55F. 60F is fine too if you have high oxygen content in water. I utilize 2 filters including a marine land bio wheel and a made in Italy wavemaker to provide oxygen for my two crabs.

I’m so so happy for you. In addition to watching the oxygen, you might want to watch how much you feed him. If you think about it, he wouldn’t get as much food in the wild. And he would expend more energy in the wild. Rooting for you and Pancake :)
You should ask a crab expert at an aquarium or something. Crabs need to have evolved a mechanism to survive being trapped in a tiny pool with little oxygen with a bunch of other crabs during low tide. So him being totally inactive to preserve oxygen might be its survival mechanism. But I could be totally wrong. There could also be a mechanism that he needs to actively whirl fresh water with his mouthparts to its gills in order to breath successfully. Therefor him not moving causes him not to be able to start breathing even though the oxygen situation improved.
Therefor ask an expert at the (local) zoo / aquarium.
You were spot on with the oksygen part. Crabs tend to do thus to preserve oxygen.

Just saw this. To let you know, the amount of oxygen you add to saltwater using two (or more) bubble diffusers as you are using is negligible. Most of the oxygenation and removal of carbon dioxide occurs at the water's surface. You can us a sump with bio balls or other media to greatly increase this gaseous exchange, but again, those little aerators do nothing.
Is it this different with fresh water? Not an aquarium guy but I feel like it should help a bit no?
@@joshmcinnesart It's the same with fresh water. The oxygenation that happens via bubbles is negligible. They do help the water move a little though, and turnover near the surface helps gaseous exchange. A powerhead moving water at the surface would make a huge difference, and most saltwater tanks (and many fresh water) should have currents flowing in them.

Dungeness Crabs are deep-sea crabs, you need ten meter deep water to make him comfortable in the preasure, so you guys are amazing to bring him back.
This is my first time watching him and I started crying about a crab I never new existed.
Im so happy! I do wanna give you a WARNING! Im no (marine)biologist or anything but i do know, lobsters are very territorial. They fight eachother to the death. So putting pancake in an enclosure with one might not be a good idea. Maybe at first it will be okay because the lobster will also need time to adjust etc. But it might go wrong later.

crabs usually go in a hibernation state when there is not enough oxygen to conserve and save energy reason why it wasn’t moving bc you was bothering it and it wasn’t trying to wake up it was basically in power sleep mode

You can buy an aerator pipe holder with a suction cup in aquarium stores or amazon that holds the aerator in place. Or maybe buy those circular or pipe long aerator that will always stay in place at the bottom. That way you wont have to worry about the aerator going up the surface.

He may not have our mammal sense of awareness for traditional gratitude, but everything you do for him contributes to the comfort & security he feels. I felt the same way when I lost my hermit crabs. I had them for about 3 to 5 years each and they are still my special lil' shell goblins... you're not stupid for getting emotional over a crab. Any life you put the effort into taking care of, be it a dog, a crab, or a person, is an investment of heart and soul. It hurts because you care, and you never would have gone this far for your crabby if you didn't feel something for him.
Hermit crabs grow bigger like any other animal and require larger shells as they do. If you kept them in their original shells, you killed them by suffocation and starvation.

I totally get it!!! My son had a common goldfish for 15 years and when he unexpectedly died, it was the worst day ever....we were all attached to him - he want from being an inch long to close to 18 inches long and as long as my cat!! We loved him....I can see you are a caring person too🥰

I also had a pet store goldfish who lived with me with almost 20yrs living in a tank in my kitchen and she knew who I was. Gave me kisses and reacted to me constantly. She was more than just a fish, it was crazy! When she died it was because the oxygen hose got moved out of the water by someone in the house by accident. I still mourn to this day over it. I wonder how much longer she could have lived for. I have extreme guilt but I know intention is very important and I try to remember it was no ones intent to hurt her. We all loved her and she is buried out by the tree in my moms backyard. It’s not crazy to love a pet like they are family. It’s like sometimes they have something human in them. It’s like an old friend yet there’s no communication through language. It’s beautiful even if it does feel alittle crazy 🌹🤓

If that’s what you need to hear to get through the day that’s fine but just because there was “a little squeeze” doesn’t mean we should view that as a faint sign of life. Crabs are not people so things that apply to people don’t necessarily indicate the same thing when applied to animals. That’s called anthropomorphism. That crab was definitely not alive, it felt like it squeezed because of the anatomy of the way crabs open and close their claws lmao

First of all pancake is probably just getting ready to molt. Also crabs need a way to climb out of the water at times. The lack of air bubbles isn't going up cause any issues for a crab, that isn't the way you oxygenate water anyway. Give him a few days and he'll be fine

We had two large spiders in our cellar and called them Elvira and Antonio. Quite regularly we would see them together, but didn’t have any idea regarding their genders. One day, our cat caught Antonio and we saved him from her. We placed him on a piece of cardboard back into the cellar. Elvira was nowhere to be seen. A day later Antonio was dead and I was surprisingly sad and crying. Later that day I completely lost my composure when Elvira turned up right beside him and stayed close for many hours and then she vanished and we’ve never seen her again. Heck! I don’t even like spiders, actually I hate the ones with hairy legs, but I cried real juicy tears over their ruined lives (and yes, I was angry with my cat😁).
Fun fact: if a crab dies it will start to float up to the surface after like a few hours. If it doesn't float up and it's not moving or it's very weak, do not worry; investigate the back part of the crab and if there's a Crack or a a soft leathery object making its way out, it's at a molding stage and it's eys will be transparent and u shouldn't disturb it

I've been following both Leon from Brady Bradshaw and Pancake, and I'm glad Pancake is okay. I got emotional right there with you, man. I love crustaceans. I find them so interesting to watch. I've been thinking about getting a big ol' tank to get a crawdad in. Supposedly, for their small size in comparison to lobsters and dungeness crabs, they need just as much space. Maybe get both a male and female, and see if they'll mate so I can give them away to other people who are also interested in raising crawdads. :)

Our pets are like our babies, they are family to us. They love us unconditionally and dont judge us, the bonds we have with them are so special for that reason.

Did you let the tank cycle? If not be careful, the cycling processes is very important and most beginners don’t realize their tank has to establish before they ad fish. You seem to be doing alright so keep it up.
