Love the destroyers in that region. Historically after the landings and subsequent losses the Japanese took, a plan was issued to have destroyers send supplies to Japanese troops in that region you just happen to be fighting them in. So head canon will be that these destroyers were delivering supplies to their troops.

Had this been a real battle, the Japanese vessels should have launched their torpedoes at the first sight of American flotilla and laid smoke. The AI probably tries to imitate Tokyo Express operations where IJN did employ a lot of destroyers and light cruisers for supply actions, but they would try to sneak in at night rather than risking an engagement during broad daylight (this video showing the consequence of that). That said, very exciting battles and we are finally working on drying up the IJN destroyer bucket LMAO

This is for that little torpedoed destroyer! Your gameplay even feels American with all the murder and huge task forces looking for anything to kill- you don't mess with the US!
From trying out the new TTE mod campaign I definitely like the UI on the right that allows you to cycle between certain kinds of units on the strat map. Great for picking out your icons when they are all stacked on each other. Aircover is EXTREMELY important during the day. If you get caught out in the daylight deploy fighters to maintain a screen. This is now done very easily by a new UI feature that allows you to tell an aircraft to escort a taskforce/squadron and they will follow it. This is important because with the new changes to certain capture spots having mixed or floatplanes airfields you will find a LOT of flying boats and floatplanes around. In a USN run I had a small fleet of CLs getting constantly harassed by H6K flying boats with 2 torpedoes on each attacking in groups of 3-6, sometimes with dive bombers. Smaller escort carriers are also very useful even if to only provide a squadron of fighters. The AI even sent an invasion fleet once with a BB, 2 CA, 1 CVL, CLs, DDs, and 3 MS. That CVL could deploy 19 zeroes to cover the fleet, reliably defeating that with fighters of my own would require something like 1.5:1 odds at best. 2:1 ideally. There is also incentive to engage in air superiority battles over Port Moresby even if it only lasts a day, the AI will try to intercept the player a lot anywhere north of New Guinea's mountains. That way you can scout and strive without being intercepted.
My experience was that one time I went into tactical & the Yamato battlegroup was less than 100 ft from my battlegroup & was crossing the T. I lost 3 light cruiser & 4 destroyer, luckilly all the enemy battlegroup sank
Gotta hand it to the P-38 pilots. It takes balls of steel to attack a destroyer WHILE our shells, including some 16 inchers, are raining down on your target! As if there wasn't already enough shyte in the air!!!

Drachinifel does a few good videos on some of these "hood-style" explosions. One video actually does talk about how the Hood likely exploded. Different games often have different reasons for their Flash Fires (often the most accurate description for this) some are very RNG, some are more accurately simulated. Really wanna see a Japanese play through with this Tokyo express mod. With the personal objective of not losing Guadalcanal, take port Moresby, and for the final victory landing on Australia
The Japanese "Long Lance" torpedo used oxygen instead of air to drive the torps. The more modern DDs (the ones that shot the Long Lances) had a way of burning furiously when hit.
Heading off and sinking destroyers most likely laden with troops and supplies for Guadalcanal. Probably explains the command point difference. Well played! Has Annapolis sent you any recruitment emails lol?
They're probably just running so many DDs in an attempt to get troops and supplies to Guadalcanal. I actually discovered in my current game that Subs can carry troops. Haven't checked if they can also carry supplies though, but either is in very small portions. (50 IIRC) I discovered this because one of my islands suddenly had enemy troops on it though I'd never detected any ships nearby. When I sent planes to the area, I found 2 Subs. I'm sending a Sub to one of my other bases to see what the numbers actually are.
I don’t know if it’s accurate but early in the video that last destroyer lasted 1 min and 15 seconds before it died surprisingly longer than I expected given just how many shells it had flying at it
