It sounds to me as though there was something deeply disturbing going on in the mysteries, that required it all to be hushed up for the sake of wider public propriety. When you go back to the mythology, it's all about abduction, confinement in Hades, and then being back to the land of the living. So I don't think it's too far of a stretch to imagine a 'ritual' where the initiate is bodily abducted, and then incarcerated, possibly below ground in a chamber for a certain length of time (possibly even 6 months!). Without contact with the outside world. Possibly without light, or other kinds of mental stimulation. Just like torture initiated by ones self. Once the time had elapsed, the initiate is freed into the daylight. That kind of thing must surely bring about mental changes?!? JUST SPECULATION!
Maybe, but what I think is more plausible is that initiates were willing to self induce a Near Death Experience in order to lift the veil from the material world and experience the joy & light of the ethereal. Thats why there was such an emphasis on attaining higher states of consciousness through the pilgrimmage and music and singing. The Myths were to be experienced literally because without experience for yourself what the Myths are trying to portray, there can be no wisdom.
I think important keys are one had to have a Greek education and not be violent. It was information that undermined the cultural norm. They wanted to make sure the information could be tolerated and dealt with by the recipient. A bad example: democracy is key to a free society, but democracy mostly leads to the wrong people being in power. The masses are generally always wrong. One has to be stable enough to understand that without throwing a sissy fit and undermining democracy.
