So many people are saying that Croatia overachieved and that they've pulled off the biggest upset ever but idk I honestly expected them to do very well this year. If you just think about their team for a sec, they've got arguably the world's best midfield in Modrić, Rakitić and Brozović (also Kovačić and Badelj who are both very solid players). But not only the midfield, they also have Subašić, Vrsaljko, Perišić, Pjaca and Mandžukić. Most of their team consists of world class players who play an important role in big clubs. Plus most of their players are very experienced which always helps in a big tournament. Did they overachieve? Yeah. But was it so unexpected? I don't think so. I actually think they were underachieving the years before.

I think it might have but belgium did not have a crosser/play-maker on the right side vs france until mertens came on but that was too late. I honestly think some of the blame lies on martinez for playing 3-5-2 not a good counter or playmaking formation.

Kiki Kolar Vida is definitely my #3 CB, but he was pretty poor against Denmark and wasn't all that good against Russia in the extra time. Granqvist and Varäne were solid all the way through their runs.

This is not the best, this is the more influent. Varane is the best. Pavard isn't. (Meunier is better, and more influent I think) Cavani is the best N°9 I think. He is the striker with Griez and Giroud who did a gigantic defense effort. But he is a better striker. In the air, in his calls, in everything. Kante has no equivalent. (was sick during the Final. In my opinion, Griezmann has been a bit overrated this world cup. The games I watched him he played too egoistically which the stats also kinda show if we, for example, compare him to Mbappe. Griezzmann 21 attempts - 11 on target - 4 goals (2 of which are penalties) Mbappe 8 attempts - 7 on target - 4 goals. As for keeper, I prefer Courtois or Schmeichel. Courtois saved 27/33 attempts (81.8% save rate) and had the most saves in the tournament. Schmeichel saved 21/23 (91.3% save rate) And had the 3rd most saves in the tournament (91.3% is mental considering he had 3 penalties against him!) Lloris saved 12/18 (66.7% save percentage) and did a huge drop in the finals. Pickford with 17/25 (68%)
Lasse Andersen yeah Griezmann was incredibly selfish this tournament. It's not that he didn't help the team - he hindered the team's attacking and especially counterattacking potential. Much less selfish and more supportive in generating attacking threat was Lukaku, and even Kane has been levels above Griezmann this WC. Also yeah, I think it's between Schmeichel and Courtois for goalkeeper of the tournament, they basically did the same as Pickford has done - just every game instead of one particular game. Schmeichel's kicking was also really good this tournament, while Pickford's, while really bold and innovative, has faultered from time to time. The Futból Follower I am Croatian and even I would not put Strinic in the best team. He was probably our worst player because he has no balls. He only does defensive work (that is not even great) but in the attack he is almost invisible. So it is very hard for Perisic to play because he always has 2 players marking him. When Pivaric played we were much more dangerous in the front because he crossed a lot more. At the end of the day he was the one who crossed in the ball against England and Mandzukic got a rebound. No hate just saying

i would definetely go with schmeichel in goal, he saved 50% of all the penalties he faced including penalty shootout and almost singlehandedly gave denmark the win over peru though denmark didn't go too far into the world cup, schmeichel was what got them to where they ended... and denmark played even against both france and croatia

Even though I agree with the largest part of your thoughts on the Belgian midfielders, Witsel was never the problem. Yes his move to China was purely money based, but he played a very solid tournament and was probably more reliable than any Belgian player (except maybe Alderweireld). Carrasco and Dembele on the other hand were much less reliable and that's not what we're used to from Dembele, so definetly no hate towards him, it just wasn't his tournament.
Funny that people complain about Harry Kane getting the Golden Boot...yet Griezemann scored the same amount of penalties and one open play goal, just the fact that Harry scored 3 pens (like Antione) but 3 open play goals. I don't see why people are complaining.
I definitely would have put Varane in my team, not only because I'm French but because I genuinely think that he was the best centre-back of the tournament, we wouldn't have made it if it wasn't for him (he was tremendous against Belgium). Don't forget about him for the Ballon d'Or, I think he will get quite high on the list even tho it will probably go to Ronaldo if he does well at Juve. As for the Euros it will be a very interesting tournament to watch because England and France have some very young players that can make a lot of progress. Belgium will probably be one of the favourites, they were amazing during the world cup and have some top players (hazard, meunier, de bruyne and of course courtois). I think it's way too early to make any predictions for the 2022 WC since there are so many teams that need to bring forward a new generation of players (Argentina for example) and maybe a new football philosophy (we saw that Spain's possession football wasn't really efficient during this WC so they need to completely change the way they use that possession).

i would definetely go with schmeichel in goal, he saved 50% of all the penalties he faced including penalty shootout and almost singlehandedly gave denmark the win over peru

Yeah, he could fit there, he was our best player, so much better and useful for the team than Neymar, but Hazard being picked over him it isn't any absurd.
Against Belgium, and not just this game, he sometimes disapeared for 20 minutes. He is good, but not at this WC.
Neymar at least always tried something new to surprise his opponents. Don't blame him, blame all the players. You can't improve by pointing 1 element, when it's all the team who failed.

Even though I agree with the largest part of your thoughts on the Belgian midfielders, Witsel was never the problem. Yes his move to China was purely money based, but he played a very solid tournament and was probably more reliable than any Belgian player (except maybe Alderweireld). Carrasco and Dembele on the other hand were much less reliable and that's not what we're used to from Dembele, so definetly no hate towards him, it just wasn't his tournament.

I definitely would have put Varane in my team, not only because I'm French but because I genuinely think that he was the best centre-back of the tournament, we wouldn't have made it if it wasn't for him (he was tremendous against Belgium). Don't forget about him for the Ballon d'Or, I think he will get quite high on the list even tho it will probably go to Ronaldo if he does well at Juve.
As for the Euros it will be a very interesting tournament to watch because England and France have some very young players that can make a lot of progress. Belgium will probably be one of the favourites, they were amazing during the world cup and have some top players (hazard, meunier, de bruyne and of course courtois).
I think it's way too early to make any predictions for the 2022 WC since there are so many teams that need to bring forward a new generation of players (Argentina for example) and maybe a new football philosophy (we saw that Spain's possession football wasn't really efficient during this WC so they need to completely change the way they use that possession).
