yeah yeah yeah the balancing on the vocal mix is rough. i used to have a thing about this in the desc but i lost the project file a while back when a harddrive crashed. plus for whatever reason the official instrumental and acapella both have backing vocals so it's tough to balance the mix out. if i can find the time i'd like to re-make and re-upload this but i'm focusing on personal projects more these days. appreciate the feedback from everyone that's checked this out
Brian may have written and arranged the music, but Carl's *production* is what gives this song its unique sound. It's shoegaze 20 years before shoegaze.
@@davidnissim589 It’s interesting when Brian is asked about certain songs and he will mention Carl adding this or that instrument to many of his arrangements. Carl was underrated as a producer and should have been more involved in all their albums post pet sounds. It’s mystifying how he wasn’t.

Mike Love wrote the lyrics for this one. Even sang in a bit of falsetto too. Regardless of what you think of him, he still had his moments in The Beach Boys
This was one of his shining moments, Big Sur (the one recently released) is pretty impeccable too and of course his lyrics to Good Vibrations. I don't think the problem with Mike was not that he wasn't talented, he has a very unique vocal tone and a feeling for to the point lyrics. Love's lyrics and performance suited the song. Love or Brian Wilson could have torpedoed the song with corny lyrics, but they managed not to. What really knocks this song out of the park are the chord structure, the arrangement/production, and the mix. And what tasteful use of the Rocky Mount Instruments Rock-Si-Chord!
This is genius. Anything that makes this song longer and keeps the mellow groove going is a plus in my book ! I never understood why this song was not called out as a ground breaking masterpiece.

The beach boys were written off as washed up in the late 1960s and they most certainly were not. The Beatles are great but they get too much credit. The Beach Boys had some brilliant work in the late 60s to early 70s
It's 1 of the best Beach Boys songs ever, it's not as known as Good Vibrations or God Only Knows but it should be! The melodies and harmonies, gives me chills
Well, it kind of does command that level of respect today. I think it incurs a lot more recognition and credit in recent years, or ever since the link between this and the relatively new-ish shoegaze genre was recognized. Before that genre was a thing, it was mostly considered as just one of those more obscure deep cuts that few people ever really mentioned (aside from hardcore fans).
What a song! I loved it since the first time I listened to, 25 or more years ago. It's one of their best songs, I can't believe nobody noticed it in 1970, but that's The Beach Boys history, the best band and always underrated. Thanks.
I agree. This song is unlike anything they ever did. The background vocals give it an otherworldly sound. I've read that when Brian and Mike started writing it, Brian gave up on it and Mike finished the music and lyrics. And it didn't get recorded until Sunflower. Magnificent!

It’s the first time I hear that so beautiful song, it was lost in the middle of those hits songs, but it’s just a hit for me today, how beautiful and wonderful ❤️
At first I was skeptical but then totally won over. The original is a really radical song - one that has entranced me for decade after decade - one that deserves a much wider appreciation and acknowledgment - one that was so far ahead of its time that it couldn't compete at its time; it was alien or even from a different universe. I love it that the maker of this rendition had the fascination with the song to pursue this.
I bought this album i think was 1971. I was 16 and a life long beach boys fan. This album was mostly ignored by radio. What the hell were they thinking? There loss and my gain. I played this album all the time. It made me feel good about myself and helped me cope with life.
I too was 16 in '71. My brother had bought the album and we fell in love with it. Even reading the notes that go into the advanced recording technology they used to record this. The last time we were lucky to hear Brian with his falsetto intact.
Me too, 16 in the UK. I wore out the vinyl playing it-I still have the replacement, well my daughter has it now-u-tube is great for all the beach boys stuff I missed as the rest of life happened then......😎🤠 'country air' has just popped up on the feed so I'm off to that now!
I was only 4 years old in 1971, but I’ve had this conversation with a lot of people who were old enough to remember exactly how it all happened back then, and the unanimous consensus was that the Beach Boys kind of blew it for themselves in 1967 with the 1-2 punch of bailing out last minute on Monterrey Pop, and then not delivering on the hype that was being promised with SMiLE. It also didn’t help matters that they were still wearing those corny stripey shirts in the middle of the psychedelic summer of love. I certainly have never had any love for the burgeoning hippie elite from that era, but I can sort of understand why they turned a cold shoulder to the Beach Boys at that particular time, at least initially. What I _can’t_ wrap my head around is the way they continued to hold this ridiculous grudge and blacklist their new releases, even going so far as to tell radio dj’s not to play their (new) music, and record stores not to advertise their new releases. I mean, this went on for something like five years. It was absurd and an obscene overreaction. The Boys were making some of their best sounds ever at the beginning of the 70’s, but most of it was just ignored until much, much later. I seriously believe that if they had just made their appearance at Monterrey Pop and finished and released SMiLE on time in the summer of ‘67, we’d be living in a completely different musical landscape today. Oh well, what’s done is done (and what wasn’t, wasn’t).
Bruce johnson. He joined when Brian stopped touring in the mid 60s. He wrote some of my favorite beach boy songs, especially Tears in the Morning@melting94

The great thing about this era of the Beach Boys (‘70-‘71) is the tasteful diversity of different styles represented on those albums (Sunflowers, Surf’s Up). Of course there were the wonderful Brian-penned songs, but then Dennis and Carl both stepped up and put something on the table, as did Bruce and Al. Bruce singing lead
Who's the lead singer here? Sounds like Bruce Johnston.
Mike Love believe it or not sings lead on this beautiful song. One of his best leads ever imo
I feel like the lead vocals are too quiet at times. I can be hard to make them out over the harmony vocals.
yes pure dreampop before there was dreampop
Yeah, not bad actually...not bad at all
Lead vocals need to be mixed up!
Bald Mike sounds good. Mike is bald
