  • You're never more than 10 feet from a metal casting. They're in infrastructure, household products, sports equipment, medical devices, and more. Metal castings are made in factories called foundries, and this kit, called Foundry in a Box, shows the basics of how castings are made, from melting to pouring to finishing. These castings are made from tin, which melts at a relatively low temperature.
Foundry-In-A-Box is for demonstration purposes to explain metalcasting basics:
-Do not use Foundry-in-a-Box without the supervision of trained metalcasting industry professionals.
Use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing to prevent and protect from burns due to hot objects or potential molten metal splash, spills or run out. Users should wear long sleeved shirts and pants of natural fibers, safety glasses with side protection, closed-toe leather shoes and well-fitted leather gloves.
Do not allow water or other liquids in the areas where molten metal is poured.
All materials used with molten metal must be clean and completely dry. When moist tools or water come in contact with molten metal, it can cause a steam reaction that can eject the molten metal out of the melting pot or mold.
Use caution when handling the cast metal parts. The cast parts may be hot and have sharp edges. Use proper caution and protective clothing.
U.S. OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.132 provides guidelines for personal protective equipment (PPE) and hazard assessment requirements.
