Have you ever heard of the “Terran Trade Authority” books? There are some beautiful ships in them and being able to see one of them come to life with your scratchbuilding skills would be amazing!
Lots of book covers from that era had very interesting and colorful ship designs. I always wanted to see an undamaged version of the ship from the Spacewreck cover. As a kid, I didn't know whether the asymmetrical look of the craft was from the crash damage or part of the ships original design.
Wonderful kitbashing and painting. I especially like the "pin-washing" section, as most videos I've seen, the washes go on perfectly, rather than showing that it is possible to clean spills effectively.
For a model like this, where everything is going to be super messy anyway, I'm not too worried about spilling over. On some of my other builds, like the Cantor-class, I tried to be much more careful about it to keep it clean.
As someone who plays Silent Death, I'd love to have this freighter in the game, the scale is perfect. I think it's actually very similar to X-wing in that it is about 1/270 scale.
There's also the old Silent Death/Star Wars ruleset that was published in one of the Star Wars: Gamer magazines which I remember playing a lot of before my copy of the magazine ended up wrecked when I lost a lot of my old books due to a broken pipe a long while ago
I made logo decals for a tanker starship miniature using a laserjet and some decal paper. They came out great, and the ship is for some reason carrying tanks of Seagrams, Pepto Bismol, Slurm, and more.
Amazing! I just went off to re-watch parts of the Taiidan Bomber build after this. Your dedication to your craft is inspiring. So much practice must have gone into your model building. Always impressed and looking forward to the next one!
This is certainly one of your best builds by far! I think the weathering and decals really add to this model. I always look forward to your next project. Thanks for sharing this.
I really liked the balance between narrated sections and just-crafting sections on this video. Also, I think your skill in chipping is getting even better. Looking forward to more!
I should be complementing the absolutely amazing work on this miniature, but honestly I'm just really grateful to you for putting the music titles in the description, IN ORDER as well!
For the cargo containers, I probably would have also gone with a bit of scribing to help the containers look even more separate, but that may be more of having gone off the deep end into gunpla
amazing, ive gotten into regular miniatures painting like 40k but i didnt know anything about people making stuff from scratch with styrofoam cards like this. great job
One thing that you can do that was heavily use at ILM is to lightly mist a coat of base colour or grime back over everything. This settles all the colours and gives them a slightly sun damaged look. Like, airbrushing medium pressure from 30cm away. It's a really subtle effect, but a few different mists really takes the edge off everything and settles decals.
@@Sublight_Drive It's definitely different to most desktop model techniques like pin-washes that ILM didn't really use. The first time I tried it blew me away. Instantly changed my desktop looking model into a filming model. There's a definite "look" to the ILM filming models (if that's what your after, of course). Lee Ralph gives some really good tips: ruclips.net/video/CGi-12eAVPY/видео.html
Goosh seeing you work on this is so good. I love seeing styrene work and its far too rare. Amazing work, from the construction to that glorious paint-job.
I have been binging your videos since I found them and I think this might be my favourite. Fantastic build, great painting and beautiful weathering. It looks so 'lived in' and like a working machine. Have you ever thought about doing ground vehicles in the same scale as your Kingfisher? (Maybe you have and I just haven't got to that one yet) You've inspired me to dig out the Star Wars landspeeder I've been building from scratch with the same methods. It's been left abandoned and part finished for too long!
I would love to see a ship just like this one but instead of a cargo container it has a transparent top. Inside would be an atrium with seating, plants mabey a few shops. A civilian cruise ship!
Yep, there aren’t very many of them, though, and most are based in the UK or Australia, from what I found. I imagine the machines that do the printing are pretty specialized.
@@janeblogs324 oh yeah? Works OK on a mini? I guess it couldn't print white or lighter colors really, only kind of a "multiply" layer in photoshop. Still, I should look into that, thanks!
@@leeperry7068 I've actually tried using the print at home ones in the past- they're much more delicate, and you're right about them being transparent. I didn't find them to be very useful at this scale, but you might!
I've watched all your scratch build videos, and made a couple of attempts (from pictures). BUT for me the hardest part is making templates at the start. I think everything is good, but when I start cutting out styrene, nothing wants to line up or things that should be symmetrical end up being wonky. Any tips for the pre-build stage?
Honestly it's just practice and learning which shapes come more easily than others. I've found that doing lots of sketches beforehand is helpful, but even then the version you see in my videos isn't the first one out the gate. I usually do two or three rounds of testing to get the right sizes and shapes. I recommend doing a dry run with just paper before you go to cutting styrene; that way you can see if all the pieces work the way you want before losing time and plastic on parts that don't fit.
According to the background, the Commonwealth developed a wide range of shipping containers that carried various weapons systems and even a couple of lightweight fighters, so turning each into a Q ship if it was warranted
Wow, this ship is just fricken' awesome!! I love it cuz it looks like an actual working freighter. Those decals really help sell it, and your weathering is spot on sir! When you said to keep the off-cuts I could barely see what you were talking about they were so tiny. Dude, I'd need a set of micro tweezers and some really strong maginfing readers to do that. In my experience things that small usually achieve terminal velocity and/or escape via a wormhole to a pocket dimension when I cut them free. 😑 Very little chance of me hanging onto them without an Interdictor's tractor beam Amazimg ship model! Keep on keeping on good sir!! 👍👍
Just discovered your channel! The algorithm works sometimes. I love everything you did with this build. I'm amazed by your ability to get perfect 90-degree corners every time. Have you tried Vallejo's chipping medium? I get fantastic rust results with it combined with AK Interactive's Weathering Pencils.
Glad you liked it! I've not played around with chipping medium, or any kinds of specialized paints for weathering. So far I've been happy with the methods I use, but then again I haven't tried anything else, so I'm half afraid that if I try something fancier I'll never be able to go back
Ahh, this is fantastic. I haven't done any scratch building dor years, and never anything on this scale. I must try it! Will you be putting the templates for this on your store?
It’s an interesting idea- I mostly like making small projects because I have a clearer vision and (usually) they’re quicker. It’s kind of hard to tell from the video, but my Cantwell build was a decent bit bigger. Around a foot and a half long, if I remember right.
I like your work and enjoy your videos. I was interested to know if this ship is on or forthcoming to your Etsy page. I would be extremely intrested in purchsing the plans, as I have ideas.
I have no plans to put up plans for it, sorry. Unless something dramatic changes in the near future, the only templates I'll be putting up for purchase are ones that are 100% my own design, not from a pre-existing piece of art.
I was wondering if you or anyone else on your channel has tried using a "vinyl cutter" like a Cricut or Silhouette to cut styrene sheets for these types of models? I tried this a few times with my Cameo for very very basic models and it works pretty darn good. I had to experiment with the settings but it's relatively easy considering you don't need to cut very deep at all, basically a score. I've only done simple cuts but want to try more complex shapes eventually.
The only way this build could get better is if you added some graffiti! I love how the wear and tear looks on the cargo. Especially with the variety in color!
which type of styrene sheets do you use, ABS? Amazon here in Canada doesn't seem to have these in stock very often and when they do it's kinda expensive. Love your builds, and the snapping of the components is definitely ASMR! This ship certainly has some wonderful angles and these containers, the greeble, the paint job, oh man! Sensational! =)
Not ABS, just straight polystyrene. As I understand it ABS is tough to bond to other plastics. I actually got mine from an industrial plastic supplier nearish to where I live. I had to call around before I could find a place that would sell me a single 6 ft x 8ft sheet lol, most of them had a minimum order of like 100.

First time watching your channel. I’m wondering why you space your parts layout so far apart on the styrene sheet; it seems inefficient to have so much spoil.
It’s easier than trying to line up the templates to previous cuts, but the real reason is that I just have so much styrene I don’t mind a bit of waste.
hey i was wondering what CAD software you're using for these patterns? i wonder how you could print them as paper-model like sheets to put onto styrene

Another amazing spaceship. Looking forward to see more!
always a good day for sublight drive
To get the styrene follow curves and keep the shapes , you have to dip it in hot water for some seconds, attached to the item that gives it the shape.
Oooh, I'll have to try doing this. At one point I tried to use a lighter to heat the styrene and that did NOT work lmao
Your videos got me to buy some styrene sheets and a new set of tools. Thank you
