      It reminds me of when you hire someone to fix anything. They change one part that costs $5. You go: "What that costs $5 and I'm paying you $100 for the hour?". You're not paying for the part, you're paying for the person's expertise that they honed in after learning the machine inside and out.

And big ups to Kanye for not being to proud to ask for help and putting the art above ego, a lot of artist wouldn’t have put their pride aside to ask for help from a industry colleague/ competitor. Why didn’t Kanye or any of the engineers suggest and 808 ?!
      Crazy
      I always suggest an 808 (to myself) to layer over a kick to make it knock
      Crazy to think Kanye wouldn’t have arrived at that himself at this stage of his career

    • @allthingsaudio4610
      @allthingsaudio4610 3 года назад +175

      Im surprised kanye couldn't figure this out by himself or with his team. Simple problem. If your kick & 808 aint hitting or clashing simply invert the phase on one of them,eq, compress, or parallel compress,tune,pitch. Its not that hard. Or create a custom kick with the 808 together just for the song. Put a kick that pops with fast attack and place the 808 under it with the length you need for the bass and compress it a lil bit for it to gel together. Throw a lil eq and dirt or lo fi to it for a lil seasoning and bam you got your kick & 808 in one sample.

    Until you realize how hard it is to do... Most people think sampling is easy and thats why its frowned upon, and when some producers do it it is easy, but the way kanye and Timb do it, its more difficult than you think. Making it an art in its own. I actually think its easier to make a beat from scratch then to successfully sample a track the way Ye does.

    The problem is his original kick had "tonality" in it - So when using it with the 808, which is very tonal - it clashes. So then u run into all kinds of problems wen the two parts r not right to start with. Thats why the very first step is CRUCIAL which is to make sure you KICK and 808 are TUNED together and ALREADY separated. Then its becomes sooo much easier to mix them and they jus harmonosly blend beautiful complimenting each other. The kick punches thru and it knocks on ur chest and the bass 808 wobbles you on ur abdominals and lower gut level. Together they form wht u wod call a HAPTIC experience of a really good low end of a song

    Just so everyone knows, Tim didn't do anything crazy here, he just found the right kick to go with the 808. Before that, Kanye was trying to fix the problem by adjusting the kick he already had, and often times there's no amount of processing you can do if the sound just isn't right. So Tim went through his sounds and found a kick that would work with the 808, and that was it. I bet Kanye just got caught up in the song and thought the mix was the problem. It happens to a lot of producers.

      It just shows that Kanye, like most hip-hop producers, didn't understand the basics of music. Amateur producers without education always treat drums as if it's separate from music rather than a low register instrument played rhythmically. New producers like Skrillex or James Blake that come from a musical background understand that and their drums always sounded focused from get go. But it's a common knowledge now.

      Because the technology behind it has gotten so much better. There's no need to have huge mastering decks and consoles, a laptop has enough to do it all. You can zip large files and send them over the internet. No need to fly to LA to get a mix done. No need to buy 10 different keyboards with specific presets, you can download a handful of VSTs and get any sound you want.

    • @reee9904

      Just because the tech got better doesn’t mean it should be quicker. I think what OP met to say, is that artist aren’t going after the best possible sounds and options to amplify the record. It’s more simplistic and dare say, lazy. Even with better tech, artist today know they can get away with a lazier beat and lyrics, just the clout matters now.

      imo there are still mainstream artists that take their time to perfect their craft or songs. you just gotta look in the right places. art that takes time to perfect doesn't dwindles as time go on, it just so happens that music that takes "less effort" gets more attention.

So Timbaland blew my mind in Hip Hop when he came out... Because he combined all of that into his Urban Pop creation with Aaliyah.
