- Welcome to the August 2023 Garden Tour! Today we'll be taking a tour of my cottage garden from sunrise to sunset. I'm excited to tour you around all my gardens. We'll start in the hydrangea garden, tour the raised bed garden, and check in on the no dig cut flower garden. Then we'll do a garden tour of the main flower walk, driveway garden, and front yard garden that is in the middle of a makeover. All of my garden function as working cut flower gardens. Your ending remarks and the last shot at dusk really are beautiful. There is a change in the light and look of the garden in the Fall that is perfectly imperfect.

Hi Danielle -- You asked for comments on your stone landing in front of your raised beds. I agree, that you should make it just a little wider and a little deeper. I'm not sure boxwoods would give you the look you are hoping to achieve. It will block the view of the beautiful stones, as well as the backdrop of your raised beds, and close in your seating area. In addition, I think boxwoods will be too formal for that area, as it has a cottage vibe. Hope this helps! Whatever you decide, it will be beautiful. The garden is always under construction, as gardeners we like to change things up with a newer, more beautiful style.
Yes, I meant to mention this in my earlier comment. More boxwood would definitely be good in the front, though. Or other evergreen shrubs.
I agree…beautiful gardens, but boxwoods would interrupt the view and the carefree style you have achieved. A softer border would enhance whereas I believe a boxwood hedge would detract. So glorious as is, though. Amazing!

Hi Danielle, Congratulations to all the winners, great names everyone. This might not be in the budget for the raised garden bed area, Yes, I would enlarge the stone to widen the deck, I would add a pergola over the deck, string your outdoor lights over the top of the pergola. It will give you the magical effect at night and provide shade for you to sit during the day. Enclose the room in the boxwood and add a steppingstone of a hummingbird at the entrance of the garden room entrance. As for hummingbird way, I like the iron work exposed, but if you want a vine try a morning glory vine on the left side where the honeysuckle vine is currently growing. Did anyone see the hummingbird on the verbena bonariensis 13:07? fun surprise. Beautiful video Danielle, great job filming! 😍

Beautiful, beautiful tour (as usual). Grace is TOO adorable in her chair!!! I like the hummingbird trellis w/o flowers - it is beaUtiful on it's own, and you have a lot to admire in the hydrangea room. I agree about extending the cut flower deck with additional rocks, but I'd say NO to boxwood hedges. To me, it'd be too formal-looking and distracting from the views, in and out of the cut flower beds. The driveway garden is by far my favorite -- I LOVE the wood-pallet path and the looseness of the gardens. It's already looking very park-like, and I love that!!! But I know, whatever you decide, Dannielle - it will be aMAzing!!!

That huge grass you have does make a statement😂I can see why your hubby likes it. I would never know there were 10 stakes holding it up😮Those amazing Dahlias make me want to grow one! This was a beautiful video. I think everything looks so polished, healthy, and calming; especially at a time of year that for me is overgrown and overwhelming. I especially like how plants are framing and hugging other plants and the statues. Imho, the stone patio is perfect as is; the plants framing it soften the edge without obstructing and the size makes it more intimate and is a good proportion with the size of the raised bed area and the walkways surrounding it. I have a Doris Day movie collection and am a bit older than you, so I got the Rolly Polly reference right away, but had to think hard to remember the "Have mercy!" one. 😂
😊 seeing the vista of the dark dahlia and the white hydranga was very unexpected. I think that it had wonderful success for being a suprise!

A thought about enlarging your stone patio by the cut flower garden. Immediate thought was yes! and then second thought was you don't want it to feel like you've created a tiny little narrow pathway between the smaller side of your garden and the patio. Maybe make the patio a little bit bigger and put fabulous containers on each side giving it definition that you're going into that room. Some pots/urns or teak planters like Erin from The Impatient Gardener has, with an evergreen in them.

I would put a boxwood hedge Sprinters, in front of the hydrangeas, then short annuals for color at the front of the boxwoods. Jack Barnwell does this on Macinaw Island gardens. They are gorgeous! Watch his videos for ideas. Love your garden, I get ideas from you also!!

I love stone paths, you can't have too many of those in my opinion. The abelia looks great, I think we get a lot of bang for our buck with flowering shrubs, and many of them offer winter interest as well. Is that what you're doing in front of your house? I'm not sure the patio next to the raised beds needs to be wider, I think it might need to be deeper? Enjoy this glorious time of year 💚

I think Grace chose that spot because dogs like to choose a defensive position, essentially a position in which they can view every entry and exit, every direction. From there, she can easily do her rounds, come back to her throne, and survey her kingdom. Personally, I love to see arbors absolutely covered in vines. I have two large arbors and last year planted rampicante squash on one, and tomatoes on the other. The rampicante squash themselves can reach up to three feet, so watching those grow and dangle through the roof of the arbor, squash flowers trailing like clematis, walking underneath, is magical. I tried putting in climbing roses, but they cannot compete with the squash, so I went with the squash this year and put the climbers elsewhere. Your gardens are looking spectacular and inspiring.

Hi Danielle - - many thanks for this beautiful, informative yet meditative tour of your stellar gardens. I would agree with widening the patio in front of your raised bed gardens, and possibly deepening it a bit too. We recently added 3 feet to the depth of our back patio, and it has made a huge difference in the perception of spaciousness of that area. The furniture fits a bit better too! In my experience, if I thought a hardscape area felt a bit cramped , I was always super happy after I enlarged it.
Can you please share what plants you have surrounding the patio, the six white flowered low bedding plants? I love the feel, they give to this garden room!

I would caution you about boxwood. Mine smell like cat pee early in the summer. So gross. Plus they can get pretty big 😊

Congratulation for your breathtaking garden ❤, I live in the south of Italy, this year i planted tuberous begonias and when the temperature went over 30 °C all my beautiful tuberous begonias are dead, they were in shade but this factor was'nt enough to avoid the death.
Do you know if exist a tuberous begonia that can resist to tempetatures that go over 30°C ( 86° F ) ?

I'm in southwestern PA and have such a problem with deer eating my hydrangeas. Are they not a problem in your yard? You have a beautiful garden!
I use a motion activated sprinkler to keep the deer away from our blueberries. It works! Also use deer repellent spray on our hydrangeas and red twig dogwood. They don't do a lot of damage to the hydrangeas, just a few nibbles. So when I see that I spray. They love the Artic fox red twig dogwood, especially early in the season when the new growth comes out. The deer repellent sprays I've had good luck with are Plantskydd and Liquid Fence. The Plantskydd doesn't wash off after a rain so it lasts longer on the plants.

Loved this tour! Can you tell me what that pink flower is @17:20? I have one that I bought at a flee market and she called it a spider plant, but wanted to know the correct name. Smell really funky.

Hi friend! I have the best luck pruning hard. About 1/3 off each year and only keep the strong stems. I didn’t do that with the one near the garage and it’s not as strong as the others. I hope that helps!
