  • The Kia Stonic, it might sound like a horse disease but the GT Line S is a modern take on the warm to hot hatch, a compact crossover/SUV family car with plenty of toys. Heres a quick look at the Stonic

    Sad that the Rio has been discontinued this year with the aim of this Stonic being the replacement. Sad really as the Rio is a brilliant car, I have a 2015 Rio 1.4 diesel and its terrific, great mpg, great to drive and all 89HP and its diesel torque do a very good job, especially at low down revs, quite the nippy thing.

    It sets the bar a bit low to call it a modern take on the warm hatch. I does seem to be a great little car but at a similar price ~ £25K, the sister company Hyundai really fulfils that “warm to hot hatch” brief perfectly, with their i20N. It is also fully loaded and sits full size adults in the back rather better.

    My mum had a 2018 Stonic First Edition for 4 years, non hybrid but same 3 cylinder turbo, fully loaded, orange over grey/green with orange bits of trim inside, flawless in terms of reliability nothing ever malfunctioned, no rattles, no costs outside maintenance and only cost 1400 in depreciation over 4 years due to the ever increasing price of them. A very very impressive car in my opinion. Being a non hybrid it also had a double height boot and a spare wheel. It also only had lane departure warning and not assist which was ideal, and could be turned off anyway!

    I have a 2021 Stonic GT plus line coming from an optionless Toyota Aygo. This car is a dream for me. Only complaint is the very weak feedback from the clutch pedal, after almost a month of owning the car it is still hard to get away from a standstill because you feel hardly anything in the clutch pedal. Other than that no real complaints.

      Yellow's ok but I like a metallic copper/orange colour! It's interesting that very few cars are available in pink -- just the Yaris, iQ, some older Micras if I'm not mistaken. Where, by contrast, purple with orange stripes is quite a classic muscle car colour scheme for cars like the Ford Falcon GT (are there any XY-XW Falcons in the UK that could appear on the channel?!). I guess (for whatever reason) dealers are worried about ordering cars in colours that they can't shift.

    I’ve had my 2022 Stonic GT Line S (mid-grey with black roof, but otherwise I think much the same as the 2023 version it would appear) for 1 year now, and must say I’m overall pretty happy with it. I generally drive on Eco mode and after a hesitant start with Lane Keep Assist have got used to it & almost always use it, even on country roads. I particularly liked last winter the availability of the heated steering wheel (first car I’ve had with this facility) and the heated front seats are good too, on the lowest setting, although I’ve had this on several cars over past 15/20 years. Occasionally I’ll get about 54/55 mpg on longer good roads, but usually high 40s or low 50s, it seems to be better when ambient temperatures are higher. I would prefer to have a spare tyre, even an emergency running one, but the mild-hybrid battery in the boot uses the space for that, but unfortunately many recent cars have the same limitation, I don’t like it, but that’s what manufacturers seem to think is OK, that’s the only real negative I see, probably more psychological than real admittedly, except on rare occasions - and I had one of those recently, luckily resolved without much hassle though.

      Was it kia's fault?
      Ye want cars that nobody else wants and don't buy enough of them to make it worthwhile for car companies to make. That's the reality, coupled with the current ideology of cars unless they are electric are bad, which is bullshit imo.

    • @TassieLorenzo
      @TassieLorenzo 11 месяцев назад

      Why do you not like Korean cars? I don't understand how you can be bitter, the US automakers abandoned the compact car space to Japanese and Korean cars precisely because the US cars in that category were not good enough. If the Ford Focus or Dodge Dart or Holden/Chevrolet Cruze had just been both cheaper *and* better-made & more reliable than the Honda Civic or KIA Forte/Ceed/Cerato, I'm sure they would all still be on sale today! Ford, Dodge/FCA and General Motors were entirely responsible for the reputation of those cars, which turned out to be not great.
      But Ford and Dodge would rather give up and chase easier profits in the SUV and pickup truck sector -- that's up to them (while for GM, selling cars in right hand drive at all is too hard). Besides, GM Korea (Daewoo) is a core part of GM's empire. That GM Korea products haven't seen the sales growth of KIA Hyundai products is *100%* the fault of General Motors...
      The Ford Falcon/Territory and Holden Commodore were good cars, but you can't separate the Australian divisions from the incompetence of the Detroit headquarters "Don't you dare build a Falcon in left-hand-drive", "These GM Korea products will fill out the Holden range nicely and give a Holden a reputation for quality and excellence" (probably).
      I can see why people might dislike Chinese cars with the way Government-backed Chinese car companies like MG & Haval/GWM are able to undercut other car companies on price (after obtaining Western vehicle IP with the joint venture requirements), but I see no reason to dislike South Korean cars, given South Korea is an ally of Britain and Australia and the US and the way KIA Hyundai have humbly and steadily built up their reputation over the past 30 years.
      [I know some mechanics still don't like KIA Hyundai cars, especially with the Theta II and Nu engine defects, but I digress!]
