- A younger Ivan features in a very popular video on RUclips, an edition of Top Gear from 1995. Ivan was interviewed by presenter Chris Goffey and together they went for a drive in the famous Bugatti, Black Bess.
• Old Top Gear - Bugatti...
This was back in the days when Top Gear was about cars not stunts.
Anyway Chris lives close by to Ivan, so we invited him over so they could have a chat and reminisce about the past. They start off talking Bugatti but the conversation extends to cover much much more and Ivan even models a Ferrari toilet seat.
Hopefully provides some entertainment for all our followers. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy 2024.
And don't forget to subscribe....

Great to see Chris Goffey again. He was Top Gear before the crazy gang took over.
i would love to know if chris still has his Citroen Traction. loved seeing it on TG so long ago
Crazy Gang! I think that’s too polite. Yes I miss Chris’s rational and measured approach
CG could easily have a channel/show of his own. I'd watch! 😊
Yes, CG should definitely have his own channel. Harry Metcalf can do it. I could listen to these two guys reminiscing all day, brilliant video
I know Ivan is my uncle but he's also my hero this is a man with no education who could hardly read and write I was the one who got him sponsored by Tetley tea and it made his name but he fully deserved all his success, I'm so proud of him.
That sponsorship deal was a great story. We all envy you your relationship with your uncle.
My husband thinks he is the best,we were watching him drive an old racing car round the roads, bet everyone loves seeing him out driving.
What a wonderful chat. I'll say it again: when Ivan talks, time stands still. Looking forward to the Bugatti project.
Thank you Ivan, John, Tanya and Suzi for all the hard work this year. Have a wonderful Christmas all. God bless.
2 guys , talking old cars and the stories behind them , pure entertainment. Great stuff. Merry Christmas
Gosh, a real pleasure to hear the stories. Thanks to all, and hope you have a lovely Christmas etc.
My friends old Lady used to have an Alfetta, and the Italian Mechanic told her "you gotta take it once a fortnight and give her rev right to the redline" So the old dear would take it on the freeway at 1am and did it in in top gear, which I'm pretty certain the mechanic meant just redline it when shifting thru the gears not hold it there for minutes on end. So anyway, she blows past a Highway Patrol car at 130 like its standing still and is promptly lit up and chased down and the cop is just not buying her story. Eventually she gets read the riot act and let off with a stern warning, and told in no uncertain terms that this isn't monza and no place for fangio reenactments and I'm sure that mechanic had a right old chuckle with his offsider after the old girl called him to berate him the next day. So that was the end of Italian tuneups, I think she traded in for one of those compact Volvos after that.
Thank you Ivan and Chris for a totally brilliant video. Happy Christmas and a Happy & Healthy 2024 to the entire Shed Racing Community
An early Christmas present from Shed Racing ! Fabulous content, great video.
Ivan & Chris, thanks for a fantastic Christmas present for all your followers, especially us older ones, I hit 76 this April, and not only Mini's were driven flat out, my 65 Singer Chamois would do South London to Leeds with out much of a lift.
Top-notch filming. Very professional! Thanks!
Absolutely brilliant, thoroughly enjoyed that. Would love to see Chris on the Late Brake Show with Jonny Smith. Make it happen Mr Goffy !.
What happened was. 😂😂😂😂👍👍Merry Xmas Ivan and John and Suzi 👍👍
Great chat. Loved it. Cheers to a Merry Christmas, happy and healthy new year and and more Shed Racing. 😎
Chuffed to bits to listen to Chris's comments on the Lotus Elite dashboard. It was designed by my father, Peter Cambridge, who along with Ron Hickman and John Frayling were recruited to work on the design of the Elite, assisting Peter Kirwan-Taylor and CC. Thank you Chris.
Wonderful! Happy Christmas Ivan! Chris B.
I could listen to your stories all day, fabulous!
Just brilliant again!
Wonderful
Im glad i showed you and suzie he old top gear video now 😂
Always a pleasure to hear your stories no matter how many times you've told them. Black bess was a great car, very greatful to grow up around it in the workshop.
Merry Christmas grandad again, ill see you soon. 💚
It was a privilege to come along for that natter thank you and merry Christmas to all.
I could listen to these 2 all day. Merry Christmas everyone. 🎅
Possibly the best You Tube video EVER ???!!!! Happy Christmas to you all
This made me laugh, two old enthusiasts reminiscing 🤗👴🏻👍
Great to see Chris again, got a picture of him driving a Mk2 3.0S capri on opposite lock somewhere. Great video Ivan, keep up the great work 👍
Just a joy to listen to both of you going over old memories. I once test drove an ex-Jim Clark Lotus Elite back in early ‘70’s. I’m thinking there can’t have been many ‘non-Clark Elites’ for sale. Hope you do this again next Xmas.
I Loved every second of this classic video may you all live forever making more and more Happy Christmas Team Shed Racing and first Grip Susie making a great film for us all Thank you.
I remember going to Brands and see Jim Clark in the Lotus Cortina, being pursued closely by Paddy Hopkirk I think in a Mini with Vic Telford in the Porsche nailed onto the end of the triumvirate. It was the most wonderful demonstration of the handling characteristics of those three cars and the height of Jimmy’s front wheel gave him clearance over the concrete kerb which tightened his corner line. A very impressive display which made several of us comment for a long time afterwards.
Ivan you get better every show. In the late 50s I lived in Fulham and a friend and myself would drive to The Chequered Flag and drool over the cars on the forecourt about twice a week, I was driving my 1934 Morris Cunard Special. I was 18 then. I'm coming 85 now. Merry Xmas to you all.
Hi Ivan, this was excellent, great stories. Merry Christmas to you.
Terrific! Riveting….a genuine highlight.
I always think I’ll just watch 5 minutes and watch the rest later, not a chance start to finish every time. Always fascinating stories of a bygone age and a human motor vehicle of knowledge, just fabulous
Merry Christmas to All 🎄
Thanks for all of the videos this year Ivan, Suzie and Tanja. It was great to meet you all. Heres to 2024. Best wishes, Dean.
Ivan this has made my day keep on doing what you do, kind regards to all Robbie
Ivan is such an inspirational person. He's got so many storys to tell and he is a wealth of information.

The perfect Christmas morning present here in Australia, a visit to Ivan's Shed and an hours "natter" with a couple of "good old boys" about very interesting old cars. Life is very good indeed. Happy Christmas to all the "Shed Racing" team !
That was my shed racing Christmas bonus! I just love listening to Ivan talking ! May he ong be with us
Best episode ever, many thanks and Happy Christmas
Fantastic! Story time with Ivan needs to be a regular feature. Nice to see Chris again :)
Drove the original original East London grand Prix circuit in South Africa a few years ago. Still very original as I checked places against period photos and it was very thought provoking to think that the Mercs were doing 180/90 when I drove the route.
Nice one!👍🇦🇺
Fantastic, thank you both
What a wonderful way to spend Christmas eve,
What a wonderful video, so many memories that would otherwise be lost in years to come.
Absolutely lovely reminisce!!
A great video Ivan and I have the highest respect for Chris Goffey and he was the best top gear presenter of his time. Talking of ressurected car's i was at castle combe when the LOTUS DAD 10 took to the track after being brought back to life and it was wonderful to see. Have a merry Christmas 🎄. By the way...i own a 1936 Austin 10/4 and I passed my driving test in my grandmother's mini after 5 lessons.
Wonderful ivan,what a great episode 👍
Pure gold again from Ivan and good to see Chris in front of the camera. Thanks Ivan - have a good Christmas
I think this is the best video I've ever seen on RUclips. I keep wondering when Ivan will run out of stories. No sign of it yet!
I have watched this before, and I will probably watch it again, and again.......
What a great New Years Treat Ivan. Much appreciated.
Great video once again keep up the amazing work ❤
Fantic chopper ; ))
That was fantastic, thank you

All the best to all.
Two wonderful voices.
I never knew you were a saloon car champion, a very interesting and entertaining video I grew up watching chriss Goffey
love it, need more episodes like this with the tales of yesteryear and how things were in the day.
I love to hear Ivan reminisce about his life.Great to see Chris again, loved top gear of his era, thanks to all involved for producing this.Don,t forget to subscribe.
Hi Ivan, thanks so much for all of the hard work that you put into making these vids. Could you tell me Ivan, what are the details regarding the batteries that you have in your workshop that you are impressed with, the grey batteries that are cylindrical looking? Thanks again Ivan for such informative vids. Paul from Widnes.
I think they are made by optima.
Really enjoyed this, Thankyou for making it. Happy Christmas, and I hope you continue to make more content
I could listen to these two for hours. Thanks for a great video.
Has Ivan thought of making an autobiographical book out of a very eventful history. But that would be a wonderful idea! We would capture some great stories from Mr. Ivan Dutton's career!
I have tried to get him to and he won't 😔
@@billie_DuttonHmm.. I have another suggestion in mind. Make a kind of podcast where Ivan's friends discuss different stages of Ivan's career and his relatives. Also collect all material and photos and document the material. I understand Ivan as a person and very talented, as well as the family members of this humble mechanical genius and the legend of the racing car enthusiast who tries to preserve the deeply lost knowledge and skill of modifying the technology of the first generation cars. . Ivan's earlier history and even film footage can be collected from various clubs and organizations. Maybe some kind of exhibition about Ivan's career? A good start would be to hire someone from a close circle or an expert who would act as an organizer and attraction, so that the workload does not become too large. Ivan is sometimes very lovable a dope and at the same time a cringe-worthy guy!🙂
At the very least, I recommend Ivan Dutton receive royal recognition for his achievements and a title. Sir Dutton.... Doesn't sound any funnier!

We have in fact dabbled with the podcast idea a while back however finding time is always the trickiest part.
As a family we have most of his racing material and photos documenting back to his childhood and time and the chequered flag, we have recently uploaded it all onto. Hard drive when we were having an organisation session as we like to call them. Sadly from his racing era the actual video footage is limited as we have tried to source it for shed racing videos and projects.
I know many followers are keen to hear all his stories and I can tell you there are many many stories having grown up with them myself it's a shame to see them go to waste.
I will keep trying on the book track and podcast track to see if he will concede at some point however he can be rather stubborn 🤣
Maybe a night with Ivan in a location somewhere could possibly work 🤔
@@billie_Dutton When you look at those pictures and Ivan playing with cars, you can see that there is an eternal little child in him who wants to overcome challenges. On the other hand, if a child is denied candy and driving a Ferrari, the end result can be all kinds of tantrums and being mute at school or making them understand that they are still loved even though they have an "old Champion spark plug". It is a rare gift from life to be able to live in their own way without restrictions and be part of the family. I would say to Ivan that I regret not finding out about my own father's career earlier. By chance, I found my father's calendar notebook where he had written parts of his life like a diary. When I read everything. I immediately understood my father's short comments about his days at work, for example. I immediately understood why, when I was a child myself, I did not understand my father's choices or decisions. I am forever grateful that it opened up a person's own life in other ways than just as a father. He died young or over 65. He was slightly paralyzed twice. But fought his way back into working life. He left retirement to work as a consultant for the rest of his life.
Long live Ivan! he knows allot!
Enjoyed every minute, get that Jay Leno on next, call it Ivan's Podcast. teach him something and make a mint.
Brilliant.
Automotive Gold!! Happy Holidays!!
no BULL SH## JUST GOOD SALT OF THE EATH PEOPLE
I,m sure it was the PO Tower to NY race!
👍👍👍👍👍
Hi Ivan. Your 1960’s mods for a mini would not be complete without wheel spacers. I think they used to be about 1/2” thick.
Sorry I haven’t got any but someone will have a set. P
Despite the world having too many people some should be kept for ever.
Happy Christmas
Hi Ivan did you ever go to the Master Robert on the Great West road Christmas Party I think it was a kids party several F1 drivers as well as others I understand used to go I remember the bar had been signed by a lot of drivers as well as car parts adorning the walls ?
Thanks Ivan, the best video yet. A question if I may? Why all the concern about matching numbers, is it originality or a financial issue or what?
It's mostly used to prove originality.
Anyone notice the pair of *twin-choke SUs* on top of the book case at 10:39!
Someone has to get you together with Jay Leno. He's a Bugatti man and I'm sure he would love to spend some time with you.
They know each other well, Ivan has been to Jay's and Jay has been to his and Tim's garage.
Is this not a young Suzie doing the interviewing?
Sir Shed Racing?
Chuck 4, anyone got his number?
Merry Xmas all
Anyone know what model Ms Pilkington's Bugatti is, please?
Type 44
@@suziepilkington5600 many thanks!!
After watching this video! It makes you realise what real Top Gear presenters were made of
The other trio A right old set of clueless buffoons who would be out of their depth with these men!
A big fan of the channel and Ivan but the channel intro in my opinion is just terrible. Yes can fast forward it, but still- it is just no good, edit something else together from past videos and dub some music.
We listen to all feedback, even negative
Is Chris Goffey still unable to say 'Mitsubishi' without putting a 'boosh' in it?
