      Ratings of Insulators
      Rated by three voltage
      ⚫ Working Voltage: The voltage at which an insulator is
      designed to bear the steady state voltage.
      ⚫ Puncture voltage: The voltage ta which flashover occurs
      through air surrounding the insulator.
      ⚫ Flashover voltage: The voltage at which insulator breaks
      through between conductor and pin.
      ⚫ Safety Factor = Flashover Voltage/ Working Voltage
      Types of insulators
      • Pin type : For transmission and distribution upto
      33 KV .
      • String type insulator:
      1. Suspension type : For voltage greater than 33
      KV.
      2. Strain type: For dead ends, corner or sharp
      curve.
      ⚫ Shackle type: For low voltage distribution lines &
      can be used either in a horizontal or vertical position.
      Pin type Insulators
      ⚫ Pin type insulator can be one part, two parts or three parts
      type, depending upon application voltage.
      ⚫ Generally one part type insulator where whole pin
      insulator is one piece of properly shaped porcelain or glass
      is used in 11 kV lines.
      String type Insulators
      ⚫ String insulator consists of numbers of insulators
      connected in series to form a string.
      Suspension type Insulators
      ⚫ The conductor is suspended at the
      bottom end of this string while
      the other end of the string is
      secured to the cross-arm of the
      tower.
      ⚫ Each insulator of a suspension
      string is called disc insulator
      because of their disc like shape.
      Strain Insulator
      ⚫ Exactly same as suspension insulator but placed in
      horizontal plane.
      ⚫ Used to sustain extraordinary tensile load of conductor
      ⚫ At dead ends, at sharp corners in transmission line.
      String efficiency
      ⚫ Unequal distribution of voltage across string due to
      presence of shunt capacitance
      ⚫ Disc nearest to the conductor is having more voltage
      across it

    • @deang5622
      @deang5622 Год назад +125

      @@paradox9551 I think you could present it better than that.
      Electrons are not ripped out from the air.
      The electrons are still in the air.
      What happens is the electric field strength is high enough to rip the electrons away from the atoms and an avalanche breakdown occurs, where those electrons slam into the electrons bound to other atoms and a cascade effect occurs. Those electrons released from the atoms are then free to conduct electricity.
      The light produced from the arc is a consequence of those excited electrons falling back down through the energy levels and the lost energy is converted into photons of electromagnetic radiation where the colour (which is the wavelength) is dependent upon the particular gas that has been excited.
      I asked you the question to see if you knew the answer. I already knew it.

      @kauske Год назад +43

      @@notsam498 It's a good explanation, but it's mostly hot soot you see in most fires, with very little plasma. That's why clean-burning sootless fires are so hard to see. But the principal is the same, hot gas rises, and since the hot gas is the conduit power is flowing across, the arc rises with it. Basically what an electric Jacob's ladder does.

    • @deang5622
      @deang5622 Год назад +3

      Not it isn't. Around 1000 volts per centimetre is required.
      These lines are as far as high voltage goes, are at the lower end of the voltage range.

    • @KingVin712
      @KingVin712 Год назад +26

      @deang5622 How close together do you really think it is? Keep in mind 1 foot is 30 centimeters. Even if it's 3 feet apart that is 90,000 volts. And I'm assuming it's a little further apart then that, so somewhere over 100,000 volts. You consider that low voltage?

    • @michaelandersen7535
      @michaelandersen7535 Год назад +15

      Yeah, 100 kV is nothing to sniff at. And the arc was stable for a long time....

    • @mum-your
      @mum-your Год назад +3

      @@KingVin712 First of all you can see that the insulator used here is pin type insulator, used at maximum of 33KV. Secondly the towers are distribution type (wires are not that far apart etc etc) and distribution type dont have more than 11KV. And even if it is 100+KV, its not that much voltage, my college's High Voltage Engineering lab had 400+ KV transformer and i have worked on 600+ KV transmission line. you can have bigger and more insane arc in you home easily with a few capacitors and transformers
