Bienvenue to the Abbaye of Fontevraud, Europe’s largest monastic site.
There’s a lot to discover here, on a beautiful natural site at the intersection of Anjou, Poitou and Touraine in the heart of the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Abbey, royal necropolis of the powerful Plantagenêt dynasty, state prison and in the 21st century, center of the arts, 900+ years old Fontevraud, through its eventful history, offers a unique experience to visitors.

Wonderful tour, just one little correction. The Plantagenet family were not “from England” but were from the County of Anjou. Henri II d’Angleterre was born in Le Mans to Geoffroi Comte d’Anjou and Mathilde. Henri was most decidedly French, being born in, living in, dying in and speaking only French. This may seem like semantics but it is an important historical error born of the Capetian National Myth. In order to annex Anjou the French monarchy needed to create the idea that the Angevins were English and not French. As a historian I can say that historiography has now moved on and happily reinstated the Famille Plantagenet where they belong … in Anjou.

For an excellent history of Henry and Eleanor, check out Episode 3 ("Dynasty") of Simon Schama's series, "A History of Britain."

@@janatkinson520 It's a television series that was created by the BBC about 20 years ago -- if you're in the US, you should be able to order the series from your library. Here's the episode via RUclips: ruclips.net/video/ExoIvbmtPZY/видео.html
