The Fool Says In His Heart, "There Is No God" [DOESN'T MEAN WHAT YOU THINK!]

  • Two Psalms begin with the words, "The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God'" (Psalm 14:1 and 53:1). Many Christians are convinced that these verses refer to atheists. A careful reading of the Psalms, however, shows that these passages aren't about atheism at all. David Wood does a little exegesis to uncover the real meaning.

I think what he said was true concerning the matter of a fools state of mind. i.e. God won't judge what I do. That said I think that the term, " the fool has said in his heart, that there is no God" is applicable to atheism too. Both can be true, it's not a either or scenario. In one instance, God's existance is questioned. In the other instance, God's justice is ignored. In both situations the human that adheres to these concept is said to be a fool. From a Biblical perspective a fool isn't a fool that will fool God, rather a fool is a fool that is self-deceptive, they fool themselves. The old adage appears, "the greatest enemy one will face, is yourself" Or "you are you're own worst enemy".

My old pastor used to talk about functional atheists. These are Christians who if you were to ask them, they would say there is a God. But if you were to see their day to day lifestyle, you might wonder if they really believe it. David, I think you're right. We're all more like Jonah, who thought he could run away from God's will, than we care to admit. And the Israelites who hardened their hearts though they'd been saved from slavery and seen miracles. Your repentance is worthless to the Lord. But do you wanna know the only thing of worth? Jesus’ atonement of all sins and his resurrection. Atonement and redemption and everlasting life is only in these ☝️☝️☝️. Belief in Jesus, the Son of God is how you receive it. It’s invaluable so working for it, is futile.
You’ll always be in your sins no matter what, and no matter if you realize or not because your threshold of sin is insensitive and damaged. This is how you be free in your sins; believe Jesus Christ, the Son of God who gives the living bread that will eternally fulfill.
      John 8:24 KJV
“I said therefore unto you that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I AM HE, ye shall die in your sins.”
turn it right around, “if ye believe that I am he, ye shall not die in your sins”

Hector, There are many, many verses in the Bible showing that this "none that do good" is NOT talking about those who follow God and do what he says to do.
Ps 112:5 A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.
6 Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
      .
Luke 1:5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife [was] of the daughters of Aaron, and her name [was] Elisabeth.
Luke 1:6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
      .
There are many others. That means that this text is specifically talking about those who say: "There is no God". Paul is obviously not referring to this text when he says we have all fallen short and sinned.

@Visitation - of Jesus The Christ no that is not what he is doing. He is explaining how it applies to all of us and not just atheists. And you can put that together yourself when you see how the scripture is worded.
Reading out of context would seem like God is contradicting himself in Psalms but that is not what is going on. I didn't agree with him at first until I realized what he was saying. If "fool" genuinely means "immoral" then re-read Psalms with "the immoral says In his heart "there is no God".
Which is true when we sin. When we sin we are flipping God off in the face and saying that we know better than God.. it applies to all of us not just atheists specifically which the editor made a great point that atheism wasn't even really a thing back then so the scripture clearly applies to all of us.

That the foolishness in question is related to us sinning and thinking we won't get caught, which indeed doesn't restrict things to atheists. @@apologeticsroadshow AMEN brother David Wood, Your Acts Apologetics ministry, fellow brothers and sisters in Christ our Lord and God bless you ALL 🙏❤️👊. If Atheists care about what's true why do many Atheists only question theists and people who have religious beliefs and not Atheists/agnostics and secular humanists 🤔? Atheism ain't got nothing new or better to offer than the very religious beliefs it's critical of so it's hypocrisy at it's finest 😂. Hello this is for all you Atheists, unbelievers and skeptics. I'm going to address a few misconceptions and lies about God's Character and His Word. The Bible doesn't support chattel slavery or anything else Immoral. Ok so Atheists and unbelievers say God is either Immoral, incompetent or not responsible so let's see what The Scriptures actually say. God revealed himself and created a nation in a real, historical context. It was a world with a slave-based economy, with city states often at war with each other, with polygamous marriages to ensure the continuation of family lines. The laws of the Old Testament regulate this behaviour. Slaves are to be treated humanely (Exodus 21:11). They are given rights and not seen as mere possessions. Hebrew slaves were able to buy their own freedom. Human trafficking is condemned (Exodus 21:16). In contrast to the law code of Babylon, Old Testament Israel was a light to the nations. The Old Testament law and narratives do not stand alone. Jesus is now the best example of what we read. So the moral teaching of the Bible cannot be summarised by a quote taken out of context from the Old Testament to demonize God and His Word. Slavery was permitted in Old Testament law but it was regulated by God giving the Israelites instructions on how to fairly and humanely treat their slaves (it was like indentured servitude where someone could work for you if they owed debts or needed income not cruel like chattel slavery). God allowed the people of Israel to own slaves since they themselves has already experienced over 400 years of generations of Egyptian slavery and knew how inhumane it was to be beaten, overworked and taxed so God set them apart from other nations and cultures around them by giving them a fair way to treat their slaves since slavery had already existed in the world but it doesn't mean God condoned it just used it for His Will to bring Good And in the light of the whole scriptural teaching, we find the reasons for its ultimate abolition (Ephesians 6:9; Colossians 4:1-3; Philemon 15-16 and Galatians 3:28). The Word of God provided the moral standard against slavery in the Roman Empire and against the slave trade in the New World.
But what of genocide or holy war in the book of Joshua? Several things could be pointed out. The use of warfare in the ancient world did not always mean literal total destruction, even when events are described in such terms. Furthermore, the book of Joshua does not describe a genocide. It is not a race who are being wiped out, as in genocide, but a religious practice which was often appalling and degrading. Those who repent (like Rahab from Jericho or Ruth) are not destroyed but become part of Israel. It is not the racial group that is in view but their "detestable practices".
However, after all is said, we must still acknowledge that God brought judgment on the nations of Canaan. It is not our place as believers isn't to sugar-coat the Bible. For some skeptics, this is enough to make God a moral monster. But the fact is that Jesus continued to affirm that God is a Judge who will bring a future judgment on all peoples and all nations. God’s judgment will be just. The list of Old Testament stories rejected by critics often leads to a similar dismissal of the New Testament teaching of Jesus on the existence of hell.
After all, what was the Flood of Genesis or the conquest of Joshua if not a glimpse of future judgment? Hell does not demonstrate cruelty on God’s part, but it does demonstrate His Holiness and our moral accountability. Perhaps this is the real reason many people rail against the God of the Bible? It is not that they think He is a moral monster, but that they are afraid He is a moral Judge, and that has implications for our behaviour now. God is an Eternal Almighty Spirit Being and we as His creatures have Eternal souls and spirits so the punishment for our sins against Him must therefore also be Eternal but so must the reward for righteousness that's why He sent His Son Jesus to live a perfectly righteous and sinless Life (which none of us could ever possibly expect to do) suffer the humiliating and torturous death of crucifixion to shed His Own Blood willingly so that all who willingly accept His gift of salvation by grace through faith in Him will be saved and given Eternal life because that's what God wants is for us to willingly accept His gift of salvation and choose life. Exodus 21:20-21 literally speaks about capital punishment befalling anyone who mistreats their slaves so yes people are taking Scripture out of context to demonize God who literally promises that slaves who are mistreated under someone else's authority is to be avenged. When we hear the word “slavery” we think of innocent human beings, kept prisoner for life, having no rights under law and so reduced to animals. This is clearly immoral because it is unjust: the slave has done nothing to deserve the treatment.
The situation described as “slavery” in the Bible was nothing like this. It is more accurately described as one of indentured servitude. Many “slaves” were indentured servants, working for a term of years
Some other “slaves” were prisoners. There were no prisons. Prisoners had to work to live like everyone else. Some had life sentences. Some served a term and were released.
People didn't beat their good slaves but treated them well and protected their assets thus.
But no matter how rebellious a slave was, you couldn't just beat them to death. And if you knocked out their tooth or damaged their eye then you had to set them free. (Exodus 21:26). God wasn't using what other nations did because He wanted to set His Chosen People of Israel apart from the cruel, inhumane and unjust systems other cultures had so He gave them a fair way to treat their slaves and servants.
There is a lot of ignorance on this topic which is understandable given the age we live in but it's not the nefarious set up we think of when we think of modern slavery. The question Atheists must ask themselves is how come the Jews aren't being accused of slavery and human trafficking if they're guilty of it in The Bible and why would white slave owners rip out pages from The Old and New Testament Scriptures to justify their owning blacks as slaves if The Bible already justified slavery? MAKES YA THINK HUH 🤔

Even look at 2 Tim 2:15, many 'believers' should be ashamed of their study yet they still go with it. Look how the Trinity has a clear three 100% gods and then they just lie and say that it still makes one God. They also act as if God is on their side.

From a Christian standpoint, even athiests have a God. They may say they do not, but they are putting themselves in place of God.
The first commandment "Thou shalt have no other Gods before me"; if athiests have a lack of belief in a God, then it would seem that this commandment they are not breaking.
But there is no commandment written that says not to have 'no belief in a God'. This is because God exists, whether you choose to believe or not, there is a God.
Even though atheism didn't exist back then, doesn't exempt them from God's law.
If a person chooses to reject the notion of God, They are making themselves a God.
They put there own idea on what happens when you die, or how life came into existence, how the universe began etc.
These are all attributable to the one true God as mentioned in the bible. They have put themselves in place of God.
Also, the bible mentions that the law is written on the hearts of man.
Whether you choose to follow or accept in the biblical God or not, because you are made in his image, you bare a moral code on your conscience.
The Psalm verse of "The Fool says in his heart there is no God", still strongly applies to the athiest. A lack of belief in God, is a rejection of God.
This is deemed wicked in Gods eyes and a violation of his commandments.
Even though the psalm verse applies to All of us as David mentioned, athiesm is still a part of "All". The verse may not apply to 'just' the athiest, but it still applies non-the-less.

It's worst than that. An atheist must not only become his own God, he has to become his own Moses too. There are prickly atheists who come up with an elaborate system for how they expect people to treat them and how they think they should treat people. Ayn Rand's so called Objectivist philosophy is the most famous example of this phenomenon.

It does entail a disregard of God in the minds of those types of people. A suppression of the knowledge of God. After Paul quotes Psalm 53 he gives us the answer to the problem we all have. “All have sinned, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord”.
To sum it all up… a Fool is any man or woman who does not acknowledge the God of the universe, who He is, what He has done, and how He has reconciled us to Himself through Christ. Obviously non Christian’s live this way, but more often then we would like to admit, we as Christian’s also live our daily lives as if God is not there or as if He is not in control, or as if He does not see or judge or respond to our sin.

This video is the perfect example of how sometimes we over complicate very simple scripture the verse is very clear on its meaning God is not speaking in riddles or parables in this case its talking about unbelievers which atheist fit under that umbrella case closed.

@@magnificentuniverse3085 twisted scripture, we take it literally. We are all sinners this we can agree on. But the verse didn’t need to be changed in meaning. @@jimp5133 Hmm well isnt the point that the fool says in his heart "there is no God" connected with verses after it that say that none seek God and that none are righteous? And doesnt that other psalm prove that saying "there is no God" doesnt mean that the sayer is an atheist but that he denies that God will judge him? David doesnt reinterpret the verse he interprets it correctly. He doesnt deny that it applies to atheists in a way but correctly points out that it was a rebuke of wicked people that deny that they will be judged for their wrongdoing by God, and that Paul interpreted the psalm as referring to all of us in a way.

Honestly, nothing but respect for you. You haven’t let your beliefs stop you from pointing out a misinterpretation of the Bible. As an atheist, after being called “a fool” by these quotes I too assumed that they were directed towards atheism. Admittedly, this was one of the quotes that made me dismiss immediate quotations of the Bible. Thanks for this.

This is a great message. I hate when people create an entire doctrine around a single verse cherry picked out of context, from an overall passage they've probably never actually read or given any thought to. Unfortunately, this is far too common among modern day Christians. Some other examples are "think not that I have come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it..." People will literally quote this verse and immediately turn right around to say by fulfilling the law, He abolished it... Cognitive Dissonense Much? Or likely the most misunderstood and dangerous doctrine/verse of all, "saved by grace through faith alone." People have no clue what grace or faith means in this context, and think it's a "get out of jail free card" that means we can sin all we want, and aren't required to do any works whatsoever to receive salvation. Complete and utter nonsense.

Goes hand-in-hand with Stephen in Acts 7. Just before the crowd stones him, he twists the dagger of truth, telling them that they always resist the Holy Spirit. They did not outright reject God but their behavior in effect suggested that they were rejecting God. Christian, we can all resist the Holy Spirit and be fools. Don't do it.

We need someone who is guided by the Holy Spirit to teach us the Scriptures. Teaching and listening the Scriptures was an essential ministry in the 1st century church. Even in the OT also, teaching Scriptures was inevitable.
But our generation has lost it. All I hear is curse breaking, prosperity, private jets, luxury cars, deliverance from sickness, revival, etc most of it for financial gain.
90% of the present day Christians don't even know the fundamentals of Scriptures. We need someone to teach us. We need to start from scratch!
God bless D. Wood for his amazing ministry. There are only a few who actually talks/teaches pure undiluted Word of God. ❤🇮🇳

You missed a point there. Atheism is not a new thing as you claim. Declarative and open atheism is. Many religious people of the past were atheists in the heart and lived an outwardly religious life to reap social benefits in THIS life because that is all that exists and matters to someone who is an atheist in heart.

these verses bring me comfort while also bringing conviction (I use to be that fool who would denounce the existance of God) but later on in life I had a serious *wake up call* and changed my ways through the conviction of the Holy Spirit, however I've been battling the thought of "maybe I've committed the unforgivable sin by doing so, after all look what Jesus said" but to my knowledge Jesus said Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is unforgivable, along with that the Bible says *If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness* so I assume if I was really "unforgivable" like I've thought a few times, God wouldn't even give me the desire to seek repentance and ask forgiveness rather I would just live my life the way I had until I died and realized I was definitely wrong
May God bless all of you on this video, and bring comfort to those who feel like they're "too far gone" (as with God *NO ONE* is a lost cause; remember if you were really unforgivable you probably wouldn't even have that fear nor seek forgiveness; because the Holy Spirit wouldn't convict you. at least thats how I've understood it)
but correct me if I'm wrong

I've always understood the unforgivable sin to be walking away from your relationship with God. I don't think "once saved, always saved" is valid. I've watched people walk away. I feel it's pretty blasphemous to trample the Cross by turning away and saying you don't need it.

Psalm 34:4-5, 8 - I sought the LORD, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!

Matthew 6:31-34 (NIV) - "So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or "What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
