Another great video, loving the in depth analysis, helped me see it in a whole new light. A love poem for the dead soldiers?! Verrrrrrry interesting... as always TRES BON BON!
I have loved this poem for decades and I must admit I never idenitfied it as a sonnet. It is brilliantly crafted, and the framework is the funeral service of the Church of England. The passing bells are the tolling of bells before the start of a funeral, and the word orisons is an archaic word suitable to the prayers for the dead. The word "mockeries" defeats me as it doesn't appear to be part of any liturgy, making me wonder if he is referring to funeral rites as useless. Anthems as sung in Church are often solemn in tone, and I think that definition of anthems suits this poem. A funeral procession would often be led by acolytes, young boys, carrying candles. The drawing down of blinds refers ro an old tradition of drawing the binds and closing the curtains in a house where there had been a recent death. On the whole, this analysis is pretty good, but some of the context has been lost in the last hundred years.
Yes, when I read this I read mockeries in the sense of an atheist attending a Christian funeral, perhaps the funeral of a young person who has died in vain with their life wasted. To hear a minister speak of concepts such as "God's will" in such circumstances may come across as bordering on mockery
This was so amazing I really love the way u analyzed this 🥺🥺 Sorry could u help to analyze My Last Duchess by Robert Browning and Elegy-written-in-a-country-churchyard by Thomas Gray

In the U.S. this is done to show that the dead are buried and we are ready to fight again. It’s a tradition called the 3 gun volley that’s carried over from old warfare where an armistice was made for both sides to bury the dead. When both sides fired their rifles 3 times it meant they were done and ready to start fighting again.
Thank you so much, I needed this it really helped, I got 50/55 on my English exam
Well done 👏

At most funerals soldiers fire guns in the air to “memorize” their fallen soldiers
