I recall the approach to Wairere Falls from the 1970's. On that trip we climbed down alongside the falls, to the vehicles after walking from the (old) hut. Just doing one way it was a fair slog and I was fit back then!! What a huge effort you put in. Thanks for the memories - again!
I got turned round 180 degrees once on Pakihore Ridge in the Tararua Forest Park. The 'tell' was that the spur was going uphill and not downhill....I backtracked and found I had done a circle around a wind fallen tree. At 10:40 I see Kurt you still have your "Longwoods" aptitude for skillfully negotiating the proverbial "slippery log of death"! All the best!😄
21km.... that's tough. Lucky you are fresh from TA. The tracks for about a hour around that hut are not particularly easy because of roots and mud, esp south.
😂😂 Its okay mate I'm a professional at getting turned around.. Its so easy to do aye, The Falls were amazing even with the cloud cover, The dog passing through looked super friendly to. Rip those crazy rats 😂 they have no shame if they want it they go for it.
@@freedom_on_the_trail +😂😂 I tell you no Lie I literally walked a few meters of a track turned around to carry on and spent 4 hours lost lol, wondering how the heck I got turned around..our bush can be quite dense aye.
0:01 Nice! Goooood morning ☕

Thanks for sharing that. The Kaimais have definitely got my interest. A lot of history up there.
Happened to me a few months ago! Quite scary how easy it can happen. Good thing you had a compass...
With that green tunnel and no sun, I don’t know how I could have navigated without the compass

Getting turned around is so easy to do. I love your description of the log! 😂
Don’t beat yourself up Kurt, it’s easy to do, especially when the cell phone screen is wet, but always, always, carry a head-torch. 👋
Yep, one of the lessons I was taught in this excursion! Especially in the winter months while the days are shorter.
@@freedom_on_the_trail My new camera capture clip arrived today, made me think of you…thanks

Good to know. I want to do the North South Track this year. Probably late September.

😂😂 that was the craziest experience and I still can’t figure out how I got turned around. Oh well. You live and learn

That can be scary. NZ bush of track is no joke
Easy enough to get turned around. You're not the first, and wont be the last.
Hopefully it will be my last 😂
Did you take a compass on TA?
I had one on my phone.
@@freedom_on_the_trail thanks I forgot I had one on my phone 🤣
