  • Recorded by Cheney Otis and Eric Thompson at the Ash Grove in Los Angeles, CA on August 31, 1962. Features Carter Stanley, Ralph Stanley, Curley Lambert, Vernon Derrick and Roger Bush. This performance, minus the reprise, was issued on the album “The Legendary Stanley Brothers: Recorded Live: Vol. 2” (Rebel SLP 1495, 1970). Man I love this. So much mountain soul. Pure and true. From Carter's voice to Ralph's pickin'. Doesn't get any better.

This is my absolute favorite rendition of Train 45 - the tempo and Carter's vocal bring out a surprising depth of feeling missing in the faster performances by others. J D Crowe's supersonic rendition is a different animal altogether - no feeling, just impressive notes. Sad to say, Carter sounds drunk. He was dead of alcoholism four years later in 1966.
